false eyelashes - need help

topic posted Mon, October 3, 2005 - 5:59 PM by  offlineMilena
My upper lids are shaped quite round and while I like to wear false eyelashes -- I have the darndest time putting them on! I recently tried a new glue, "Duo surgical adhesive" which turned out to be terrific stuff (not as runny or stingy in the eye, but **warning** contains a small amount of latex). However, my application technique is what's suffering. I still got puckering of my left lid in mid-lid and had to rip it off and try again and again. I have tried pressing on the inside half first, then the outside half but maybe I need to wait and let the inside half dry completely first...? If anyone has tips on the whole glueing & adhesion process, I'd sure appreciate it.

    Hi Milena,

Hold one end of the lashes between thumb and index finger of 1 hand, and the other end between the same fingers of your other hand. Now make an "up/down" motion, kinda like as if the lashes were a tiny little SLINKY toy. That makes the band a little more flexible. Or, you could try individual clusters of lashes.

They look fab when on right, but I understand how frustrating they are to put on. I've felt your pain!

      Hi there,

sometimes when the lashes are giving me alot of grief, I apply the lash closest to the inner eye(nose) and while its sticking there I gently place the rest of the lash with a pair of tweezers. I seem to be able to control the lash this way and manage to get it closer to your actual lashes....um did that make sense??? Those darn buggers can be soooo trickey sometimes....I sometimes break a sweat 'cause I"m concentrating so hard!!! AHHHH what we do for bellydancing!!

        Hello-

Chances are if they are puckering, then it's because the strip is too long for your eye. Make sure that you size your lashes to your eyes before glueing them-measure them to your eye, and cut off the excess where the lashes are the longest. One eye might be longer than the other. Do that slinky motion described in the previous post (hold each end and move the strip like you're milking a cow-you're making the strip more flexible, thus making the strip conform to your eye better-for about a minute).

Or, you can cut the strip in half, and use each end on the outer corners of your eyes (longest lashes on the outside, shortest at the middle of your eye). If you do this method, you don't have to size the lashes, it feels better, stays on better, and is easier to glue on. You still have to "warm" up the strip though. And remember to use liner to blend the difference where you have lashes and where you don't. Depending on what style lashes you have, you can use 1 lash for both eyes.

        Practice practice practice!!

Adding my $0.02 to the other posts:

    1) After applying glue to the lashes, blow on it for about 10-15 seconds. This will make it tacky and they will hold better.

    2) Get a toothpick. Always keep it with the glue in your lashes case. After you put the lashes on, use the end of the toothpick to press them into place where they usually pucker until they dry.

    3) If the puckering happens after a few hours of wear, grab your toothpick again. Put a little blob of glue on one end, carefully pull out the puckered part and apply the glue to the lashes. Use the other end of the toothpick to press the lashes down until the glue dries.

And of course the disclaimer: Be careful using a toothpick around your eyes.

Hey ladies; I'm so glad I found this thread! I have been having these problems, too.

So, what brands do you like? I had a pair of Revlon self-adhesives this summer, and now I can't seem to find them again to buy. They worked well. I just bought a pair at Sephora, so we'll see how these go.

Wow! I have the same problem, my eyes are super round...I always cut my false lashes and apply to the outer 3/4 of the lid, and have great sucess. If i don't cut them they start falling off as soon as I stick them on.

I like Ardell lashes. I find I have a lot more trouble keeping the cheap ones(like the wet n wild halloween lashes) on. its something in the constuction of the strip.

There is another brand I saw at a beauty supply shop by my house that looked really good, but the shop burned down so I can't tell you what they were...dernit. They had like every shape imaginable.

Don't even bother with the self-adhesive ones. Just get regular strip lashes and a tube of eyelash glue. You can reuse the lashes many times before you have to get a new pair. I use cheap ones like Ardell, and they work just fine.

guess what? DUO makes eyelash glue in "dark" (i just found this, maybe you all know...) anyways why this is so wonderful is that it gives you a little leeway, when it dries it blends in great with eyeliner and natural lashes so any gaps aren't noticeable. i love it. it starts out gray then dries dark.

basic must dos (sorry for any repetition from above):
-clean lashes first, remove any old gunk
-trim them to a comfortable length, both outwards and lengthwise
-put on your eyeliner. but save eyeshadow for after.
-apply thin line of glue and let it set for 30 seconds to get tacky (VERY important)
-while letting it get tacky rolll lashes back and forth, flexing them (Like a slinky as someone above said)
-i, personally, apply from the outside in for accuracy. and i use a cosmetic Q-tip, that has one very pointy end and one round end, position with the pointy end and then hold in place with the round end. (and is safer than a toothpick)

-make sure to gently dust off top of lashes if you get any shadow or powder on them.
  • NEW - eyelash extensions

This looks a little pricey, but the effect is dramatic and lovely. Also, it eliminates self-fumbling with the false eyelashes. Has anyone tried the extensions? If so, how do you like them?

Never heard of these extensions. They look neat, but pricey. At times I have been known to do it the 'wrong' way and use a heavy dark glue (usually the duo latex dark) and glue the individual lash clumps to my lashes (not the skin) at the outer edge. They last about a week or so before they begin dropping off, and there is no band to conceal.

On the other hand, I have heard that this can help thin your lashes in the long run. So, use at your own risk :)

i have a friend who had the "eyelash extensions" done in oakland for i think $30. they looked great(she got them done for burning man) but they are very natural, not really dramatic enough for stage make up in my opinion. i usualy have a fairly easy time with eyelashes- everyone in ultra gypsy is amaized at when i put them on in the car on the way to a gig. here's what i do...

        i like the "pixie" lashes
(check this link and look at styles FC-9008, FC-9011. these are what i like)

        www.facetexport.com/page31.htm

cause they are usualy on a thin clear band with kind of clumps of lashes instead of the thick unflexable band. i use the dark glue and apply a very thin layer of glue, let it set for a moment. holding the edges of the lash furthest away from the band, i start at the inside corner(about one finger tips distance from the tear duct), get it lined up and then position the rest of the lash as close to the lash line on down to the end. i put my lashes on last(after i do all my eye make up) cause the dark underneath hides any space between the lashes the lash line. you can then do touch ups to make up as needed. this has worked great for me for years.

All I can say is that it takes practice. I start ahead of time and use Ardell adhesive, I have used a clear glue also, it's good but has lots of stringy, if you know what I mean. I did a make up class and have found most people are not using enough glue. Do wait a few seconds before attaching the lashes, and slightly bend them into a 1/2 circle. I start at the outer lid, because I have such big eyes. If you have big eyes go with the larger lashes, and same rule if you have smaller eyes use the demi lashes or smaller versions.

I put all my eye makeup on BEFORE I put the lashes on they are last and then the bindis, facial markings and lipstick. It works best for me. The toothpics work, and so does the manicure sticks.
