This my seem like a very basic question, but I will be in my first performance come Oct. and not sure if eye make up should be in the colors of the costume or more smokey eqytian or what works with color of the eyes? Would appreciate any input!

The list of possibilities goes on and on...

You can do whatever you like!

Seriously, bd should be about you and your art form. Be whoever you want to be when up there! If you'd feel more comfortable starting out traditional and less "artistic" looking, then just try a nice smoky eye. That way, you feel comfortable and beautiful. Maybe then after you get tired of the same look, you can then start to experiement. That's usually what happens when you're a performer. You get tired of one look and begin to branch out your styles and your tastes. And that's okay!

I started out the same way... Just doing eye makeup that I would wear out at night... Then I realized that different colors, complementary and not, are all beautiful and can look great on performers! It all adds to that "mystique" we have... Just do what feels good now and gives you the most confidence! =)

THANK YOU FOR SUCH INSIGHT! I guess I just don't have that confidence yet and not sure what works for me!!! I have soOOO many questions going through my mind and not sure how to tame them all!! What Jewlery..., arm cuffs...no arm cuffs, bangles ....no bamgles.....large hoop earings....long shinny coin earings......is the bra and belt set to bling???? Am i tring to make the costume work too much for me???? should I switch it to something more simple??????? UGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH
Suppose it will all come through trile and error.............smile

don't worry so much hun ;)
pick something You think is cute, be it clothes, makeup, jewelry... after all, this is your own style you're going to show ;)
just a word of caution: test everything, like, a thousand times! don't go on the stage with an outfit or makeup you haven't worn previously during training. you don't want to go out there and realise your makeup leaks with the sweat / your hairstyle doesn't hold when you spin or bend / your skirt is too long and you keep tripping on it / your bra doesn't hold firmly / your belt catches onto your veil / your cd skips on your music track ... or 500 other similar situations that could've been avoided by testing the outfit :)
just make sure you step onto the stage feeling fully confident that everything'll work just fine and that you look gorgeous! ;) that way you don't have to worry about anything and can fully enjoy the fun :)

Yes, yes yes!!! Test and try everything out ahead of time this is the only way to figure out what works for you or not. As far as makeup, there are so many cool ideas on this tribe. Search through pics and see what you like and try it out and see if it works for you or not!
Good luck hun, I'm sure you'll be beautiful no matter what you do!
It's all about what YOU like as others have said!!

I really feel it depends on the intimacy of your audience. The father away=the more intense the eyes. I prefer smokey eye always with hints of the costume colors. Also, just a quick side not:
Safety pins are your best friends!
Pin your skirt to your underwear, pin your belt to your skirt, pin everything! Gauranteed it will stay in place no matter how you shimmy! ;0)

yeah that's good advice! i pin everything down, especially the belt which tends to come up off my hips and turn...
pinning to the underwear is good cos it means you won't have to worry about you underwear riding up and showing :D

as for the makeup, i agree, you can have 'normal' makeup if you're going to be right next to your audience, like dancing in a restaurant or something. if you're further away definitely emphasizing the eyes is good, you feel like it's "too much" when you put it on but from far it looks good. (just check out the kind of makeup stage actors put on!)
one thing my teacher told us too is, when performing on a stage, she tells us to darken our eyebrows if we're blond or light-colored. it sounds silly but it's true that the blaring stagelights make you look Extremely pale! and so darker eyebrows and lots of makeup on the eyes and some lipstick does help define your face nicely in those conditions :)

WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT ADVICE! I AM VERY FAIR SKINNED AND HAVE WORRIED ABOUT THE LIGHTS WSHING ME OUT! I'VE GONE OUT AN DBOUGHT A LARGE BOX OF VARIOUS SIZE PINS!

        NOW.......HAIR UP???????/ OR PONY TAIL??????

THE AUDIANCE IS ABOUT 1000 PEOPLE.OHHHHH LAWDY!!!!!!!!! (I'M FROM THE SOUTH ;0)
AS TIME GETS CLOSER, I'M HAVE THOUGHTS OF "WHAT AM I THINKING?!; I HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING UP THERE!"
        IT'S HARD BEING A TYPE "A" PERSONALITY.....

I am sure you will do great! I have not been performing long so I def remember that first time. I would get so upset if I messed up but I am starting to get over that. Just try to look like you are having a good time and your audience will too! They remember your personality more than your routine. If you love it you can't go wrong!

Remember... they are all naked! So, smile! You can do something they can't. Belly dance!

Sounds like you're gonna be on a stage with lighting. That will help cause you probably won't be able to see the audience. To be sure they can see you and your beautiful face, put on your makeup, then put on some more. Then put on some more. That's an old musical theatre trick I learned. If you think you have on way too much make up for normal circumstances, then it's probably just right.

How long is your hair? If it's really long, a pony tail with some decorative accents (flowers, sparklies, etc) can keep it out of your way. If not so very, give it a little curl and add a head band that goes with your costume. Doesn't have to match, just go with. And, what ever you do, be sure to practice with your hair as well as your costume and jewelry to be sure it won't fall apart when your big moment comes.

Above all, keep it simple and have fun!

i find i like hair down for bellydancers, it's just prettier. but as it does get in the way sometimes, and keeping it out of your face is important, something like a half-ponytail can be good, or any part up / part down hairstyle. the headband idea is good too
oh yeah, this might be random but it can get REALLY hot under the spotlights. you have to take that into account (wear makeup that holds and such).

don't worry about the audience, dance for yourself, concentrate on having fun. the spotlights might well help you do that cos they sometimes blind you in a way that you can't make out the faces in the dark audience.
if you're worried about messing up a routine, don't. if you're dancing solo, and you forget, just make something up until you recognise what you have to do in the choreo. no one'll ever notice if you keep dancing and keep smiling. And if you're dancing in a group, you can keep a lookout on the other dancers out of the corner of your eye to help you remember. anyhoo in group choreos, the audience is less focused on one person, it's more the overall look that's important, so as long as you spin when the others spin, it doesn't matter if you have the wrong arm up, if you see what i mean ;)

          just remember to smile! :)

tHANK YOU AGIAN SO VERY MUCH!! ALL THE WONDERFUL POINTERS AND ENCOURGING WORDS OF WISDOM ARE SLOOOOWLY GIVING ME COURAGE......AND CONFIDENCE....i think...........smile. My hair is medium length so i can def do up or down. Thought about the headband also as i have been browsing pics of other dancers. i had noticed alot of dancers with their hair down and found it to add a nice flow. There will be a lot of lights and that is a good point about the make-up! i am trying desperately to sty focusd on the fulfillment the dance gives me, but i guess it is human nature to let the ego to over take the Self at times. DONT LIKE THAT! Honestly a big part of my uncertainty comes from knowing my family....who loves me dearly...will be there. I KNOW THAT IS SOOOOO SILLY!!! especially when I am doing this for me! I am very much looking forward to the night and very much looking forward to having the first performance behind me and move on to teh next. it's like having a baby...........people can telly you what it's like, you can babysit or take care of nieces and friends children, but you don't really know till you have your own!! So after this first performance, I'll know more of what to expect......smile...does that make sense?? Sorry for the rambling........so glad i have a safe place to do it :0) Namaste
