I have a performance in 3 weeks and I need makeup that can stand up to a spotlight so I tried out something new for my eyes.
people.tribe.net/87e25d34-...143e5b892a
My thoughts;
I need darker lashes.
darker eyeshadow
darker eyebrow pencil
Basically darker on everything that needs to be dark except my liner.
So am I right, wrong, and what would anyone suggest as products to use, change the pattern, anything and anyone? Anyone at all really.

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 8:41 PMBe sure to use a mascara on your natural lashes. It helps add some "oomph" to the falsies. I think it looks very good.

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 5:37 AMIt looks a little severe/stark right now -- the only thing that shows up is the eyeliner. I would soften it up with some bolder eyeshadow. And the colored eyelashes aren't doing much for you, so I'd go with regular false eyelashes, and bring the bold color in with eyeshadow instead. I do think that your eyebrows are fine, however.

Thu, September 24, 2009 - 8:14 AMI think mascara on your natural lashes and a bit more definition in your crease/ around the bottom lashes would do nicely.

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 9:55 AMDefinitely mascara on your natural lashes. It helps hold the falsies on also. I would keep your eyeliner thin like that then ad something to give depth to your crease. Remember that a spotlight flattens out your face so you need to add the dimension with contouring and highlighting. So depth in the crease while keeping the light color on your lid would help a lot. Also, on your inner rim, if you line it with white or super light nude, then your eyes will look bigger :) -

Thu, September 24, 2009 - 10:24 AMI like the light shadow below....but what about a darker green/sparkle along with the white on top..?

Thu, September 24, 2009 - 3:27 PMThanks everyone. I'll try again with some mascara (didn't even think of it) and darker shadow in the crease and post the results later. :D -

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 8:16 AMi think you are off to a beautiful start! in addition to the mascara on the natural lashes, i would do a hue of green similar to the glitter you used somewhere on the lid and would use a deeper lavender hue for the crease around the outer corner of the eye. you could smooth the lavender into the line of the eyeliner around the outer corner of the eye and even bring it in a little bit along the line of your eyelid, i would suggest about halfway. does that make sense? a kiss of petal pink on the lips would be a perfect finishing touch! isn't makeup fun? :)

Test #2
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 7:10 PMAfter payday, new makeup, lots of good tips (thanks) and a second try I have two pictures. One with red lipstick and one with burgundy. How do they work and which lipstick is better? I have been told burgundy will look black under lights but I highlighted it with sparkling pink to brighten it and I am dancing to "I Put a Spell On You" so dark might not be bad.
Opinions?

Re: Test #2
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 7:50 PMOh, wow! You've really brought your eye contours out well!
I prefer the burgundy lipstick - though it's hard to judge from a screen image.

Re: Test #2
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 7:05 AMI think burgundy but the second eye attempt was much better. Just a handy hint that someone pointed out to me is that when you're using liquid eye-liner it's a good idea to work it right in between the lashes so you don't get that strange pale section. You may find that if you take a little extra time working it in on the top it will blend easier and also define your lash line a little better. -

Re: Test #2
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:07 AMI use my charcoal eye shadow or whatever black stuff I have and a stiff angle brush and mash the crap out of it into my eyelash line then apply the liquid stuff to not create a harsh line..
ditto on not being able to tell them apart, but it is looking good. =) keep practicing- I have found thats the key really practice practice practice. People kind of look at me funny when I tell them Friday nights are for make up and UFC. I get new stuff and I sit around and play with colour combos and line designs to make it what I want, that way when the time comes I know what combo's to use. =) its the best way to find what you like, just keep working it! =) -

I was thinking of trying that next time. Nice to know it works. :D
Thanks!

Re: Test #2
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 12:55 PMThis would be a good look for being up close to your audience, where they can see the delicate shimmering color and lines, but stagelights are going to wash it out completely.
I've found that an excellent test is to stand at least 10 feet away from a mirror (or someone who can give you feedback) and see how that looks. It's surprising how much dark, dramatic makeup you need to wear for it not to simply vanish 10 feet away. The rules are totally different from everyday makeup selection.
You can't go wrong searching YouTube for "smoky eye" or "dramatic eye" and sampling a few tutorials. What you need is deep, BOLD eyeliner, dark lashes, and assertive dramatic color for your lid and crease. It *will* look like way too much makeup when you're in front of the mirror. That's OK.
My last performance, I was really dubious about my super dramatic and deep poison green eye look, but sure enough -- the stagelights washed out practically my whole face EXCEPT my eyes. In the video I have of it, I'm one of only 2 or 3 people who look like they still have eyes.
I struggle with lipstick, but I figure it's always a good plan to try and figure out what color my natural lips are, and then go for a lipstick color that color but much darker. Do you think you could find a paint chip to match your lips? Then you can take the draker colors on the chip to look for lip color. -

Re: Test #2
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 1:10 PMhmmm... I see. Well I certainly have more to think about for my last test before the performance.
I have actually tried to reproduce the strong lights in the picture. I put a direct light on my face and then also use the flash from the camera; it washes out the color a lot. I put the eyeshadow on dark but with the lights it is just not as dark as I would like. Maybe I should dampen it before applying to get it darker?
The Burgundy is a darker shade of my natural color. I can go darker on that too but again, it came out lighter under the lights then in person.
Amusingly enough the eyebrows looked black in person so it lightened also. I've never run into that before. -

Re: Test #2
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 2:25 PMIf you want to see what you'll look like under stage lights a good trick is to turn off the lights and put your camera on auto, then take the pic. The flash will probably overexpose your face a little but will show you what those bright stage lights can do!

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:30 AMI like the burgundy one and you have done a lovely job with your eyes. I am wondering, have you used a concealer or highlighter under your eyes? In the photos, it looks much lighter there, but it might be the flash on your camera or my monitor. -

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 10:11 AMI highlighted with the same shadow I used on the top. Too much? -

Re: Eye Makeup Ideas?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 6:58 PMIn my opinion, it's too light for too big an area under your eyes. What happens is it ends up looking like the reverse racoon look with light instead of the dark. It's especially noticeable in photos and under bright lights. I like the light under your browbone, but maybe just use your foundation and blend under your eyes. I know we are told to lighten under our eyes to hide 'dark circles' but you don't look like you have any and there shouldn't be such a contrast between there and the rest of your makeup. I like your foundation and blush colour; very flattering on you. Very smart to practice ahead of time--something I forget to do. -

Mon, October 5, 2009 - 12:58 PMThanks, I'll use a finer brush next time and keep it more localized.
