face wash recommendations?

topic posted Sat, February 23, 2008 - 8:54 AM by  Nightshade
I know in the past there were some skin care threads. I'm having a tough time finding a new face wash. After a while my face wash stopped working so now I'm on the hunt for something new. I break out very easily so I need something gentle...yet strong enough to help get my pesky makeup off! I should note that I have combination skin...more on the dry side than oily. Anyone have good recommendations?

At this point, price isn't an issue....I just want my nice skin back!

I actually use lotion to take make up off... then wash with Biore'. I alternate types of Biore.. am and night are different. Using the lotion "lifts" the make up off you face - kind of the old "cold cream" use of days past.
I works for me and I do not break out at all.

I have the same skin type and I use Dermalogica Skin Cleansing Gel in a 2 step regime. I learned this from many shows esp. during halloween at Knott's Berry Farm. Using a round facial cleansing sponge & the gel, wash & gently remove all make-up; then repeat once more. It was perfect! If you want to take your make-up off and aren't near a sink at the time, Trader Joe's sells these great make-up remover cloths called Comedyne's. Very gentle & effective at doing the same job! Following of course with moisturizer. Good luck!

I just thought of another brand that I really like, it's been around awhile and is now available here in the states at Target of all places. The brand is called Boots and I use their exfoliant once a week and their foundation for everyday or performance situations. Awesome product! Highly recommend it!

Plain and simple Cetaphil facial cleanser has done the trick for me for years. Super gentle and inexpensive at CVS. For make-up removal, I find that Ponds cold cream works well on sensitive skin.

Neutragena glycerin facial bar at night - this stuff even removes stubborn eye make-up!
Mary Kay facial bar in the mornings - so gentle on my skin
Pond's cold cream 1-2 per weeks, depending on the hormones...

do not use toners - most of them contain alcohol, which dries the skin, which actually causes breakouts!

I also break out VERY easily, even though my skin is quite dry. I wouldn't recommend cold cream if you're acne prone, or baby oil or any other kind of oil. The best cleanser I've found for keeping my skin clear is Cuticura bar. The only place I can find it is www.drugstore.com/

Oddly enough, although Cetaphil is supposed to be so mild, it makes me break out in crazy cystic acne. My technique is to get every trace of oil off my face with a cleanser floowed by an astringent, then use a good (oil free) moisturizer to replenish the moisture.

uh, that's "followed" by... not "floowed." Hehe.

I had the same problem with Cetaphil too! Cystic acne! And also with Cuticura, Neutrogena, Ivory, Ponds, etc. Dermalogica is the only thing that has worked for me! Cystic acne sucks!!!!

              "Cystic acne sucks!!!! "

Indeed, Sooz! I had to do TWO rounds of Accutane & I still, at 35, have to use the strongest Retin-A they make. I have found maybe two moisturizers that work and don't make me break out & then I can never find them. And if you can imagine (I know I can't!!) the TAP WATER at my parents' house in Sacramento gives me terrible acne!! I have to wash my face is bottled water when I'm there! Isn't that nuts?

Love the Arbonne RE9 face wash..... It's got moisturizers built right in and the creamy formula removes makeup beautifully. I'm allergic to darn near everything (even Clinique's facial soap gave me issues!) but this works great for me.... and my combination skin likes the moisturizers in it just fine.

i have tried the Arbonne RE9 and I loved it! I am very sensitive to alot of things and this one didn't do anything negative for me. But I only used a few fromt he set. not all of them as i was experimenting. i stayed away from the serum I think it was as it had a lot of aloe i believe. I was trying out a piece at a time and really enjoyed it and the smell.

Arbonne is amazing. That's it. It's very gentle, and is the exact pH your skin is supposed to be.

If you do try the RE9 system make sure and use SMALL amounts. Small amounts will go over a large area, otherwise you will feel like you have a mask on at the end. Which is actually fantastic because it lasts a Long time that way.

If you haven't, I would definitely try this.

i really like ivory soap. i've got combination skin, some parts oily, some parts dry, and it doesnt dry out the dry parts, and makes the oily parts nice and even
plus it's ridiculously cheap, like 97cents for three bars, something like that =p

Any of Paula's Choice cleansers for combination skin. (I have the foaming cleanser.) www.cosmeticscop.com. For me (combination skin) Cetaphil (which I know a friend who loves it) is too oily afterwards, Neutragena was too harsh and drying, etc etc... the only cleansers I've really liked have been Paula's (and her moisturizers are *excellent*), and Lancome's Foaming Facial Cleanser, which is a bit more expensive (I think $25 or so for a bottle). Both excellent, both clean without overdrying or leaving me oily.

I usually use a wash cloth and baby soap to wash and remove make up, and then vitamin E oil as a layer under my neutrogena moisturizer as it made it last longer in our winters here. i have very dry skin. I have such sensitive skin that I'm leery about trying things and experiment once in a while. I don't generally break out, but my skin gets hard and bumpy when i have an allergic reaction to something.

I have the same problem, I break out very easily and have combination skin. Though mine is more oily than dry. I'm really lazy too when it comes to washing my face so i like something quick and refreshing without a big soapy mess. I use Oxy pads, I've been using them for years and years and years. My face hasnt gotten use to them yet! They do dry out the skin when you first start using them. I use Jergens Ultra healing lotion for any drying I get just whenever, its very thin and light!

Someone mentioned Accutane. I just wanna say that stuff was amazing when I had to take it! :)

Okay, totally off of the original topic, but as much as a lot of the Accutane experience sucked, Wonder Woman, (cracked & bleeding lips, etc) wasn't it awesome to be totally oil free while you were on it? I seriously didn't have to wash my hair for a week at a time & my makeup looked exactly the same at midnight as it did at 9:00am!

I swear by Pond's Cold Cream, even if your skin is oily and acne prone. The key is to wash your face after you've used the cold cream so you don't get oilier. But whatever you use, just make sure it removes your make-up super easily because the last thing your skin needs is lots of tugging and pulling of the skin as you wipe and scrub hard to get the make-up off, especially around your eyes.

    Anything from DDF.

Check w/ which ones matches your skin type the best.

I use the DDF Salicylic Wash personally. I started using it 3 years ago and its the first time I've never dared stray. My mom, sister and best friend and I are all addicted to it as well and we all use different products of theirs.

A friend makes this product line and I just sampled her honey facial cleanser. Awesome stuff, I highly recommend it! All products are 100% vegan too!

I have very sensitive skin and am prone to break outs as well. Anything with chemicals for acne such as Benz Peroxide or Siliyc Acid would cause me to break out more, by stripping my natural oils and kinda burning my skin. yummy

So now i just use a gentle face wash (such as Clean and Clear Sensitive Skin) but the TRICK is mixing it with a little water and BAKING SODA! It does wonders. Naturally cleanses, ex foliates and moisturizes! And is cheap, too. :)

You can mix a little in any type of face wash and you'll notice a big difference. It's also great in baths!

It's an old secret that not many people know about.
        Seriously, try it!

depending on how on the dry side you are, dove is great. if you use a sensitive skin formula it probably won't cause you to break out. im really dry, so it might be too moist for you, but if you can sample it, it's worth a try ^_^
