Hi I have a series of concerts coming up in December, and I sweat through my head a lot, so need makeup that will stay put and look ok when it's hot and I've been doing 10 dances(I live in South Africa and its the middle of summer in December) ... take into account that I do not have a lot of money to spend on make-up, and we only get certain brands in SA...the brands that we get (and I can afford) are Estee Lauder, Lo'real, Max Factor, Rimmel, Yardley, maybelline (Revlon started my ecxema when I was little...so I avoid using it)...I mainly need a good, covering foundation, powder, and any other good dance makeup suggestions in those ranges so I don't waste money...coz a lot of the suggestions I've seen on here are for companies/makes we don't get in SA. so any help would be appreciated:) Thanks Ladies:)

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 9:27 AMIn the past, when I did alot of clubbing, I used Max Factor Pan Stick (very thick, in a twist-up tube) as my foundation and set it with a translucent loose powder, and was very happy with it. Since I dont go out much any more, I havent used it that often recently, but I think they still make it. You can apply it with a damp sponge, or fingers, and cover your whole face, lips and eyelids and ears and neck and chest included, then powder it all to set it then brush off the excess. Then finish your make-up as usual. I hope this helps.
Baysan
PS- the coverage is 100% when set and powdered.

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 8:28 PMI haven't personally tried this product for this, but for theater makeup, they make a product called "Final Seal" (which is normally used like a spray seal over the top layer of makeup), but I've heard some people spray it on before they apply any makeup to keep it all in place. The downside would be that it's basically like hairspray, so I think it would be awful on your pores.
They talk about some sweat resistant stuff here: dancemakeup.tribe.net/thread/...8c58006, but I don't know if any of that is available to you where you are.
Good luck! ^_^

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Sat, September 22, 2007 - 11:14 AMI put this in Performance Makeup but I will copy and paste the section on foundation.
Bobbie Brown makes an absolutely fabulous waterproof foundation!! My friend decided to get a make up artist for her wedding and this was the foundation that the makeup artist used. My friend's makeup was done at 9:00 am and we ended the wedding festivities after midnight even in the Arizona weather her foundation absolutely remained flawless. If I ever start performing I will definitely invest in this foundation, I worked with makeup for years and I have to say I was extremely impressed.
I honestly have to say give it a try maybe go ask if you could try this makeup out at the counter (I know Neiman Marcus has a counter) then wear it all day do exercise, or wear it for practice to see how it wears before you invest in a foundation. :)

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Sat, September 22, 2007 - 11:52 AMThanks guys...keep the suggestions coming...I didn't even think of Bobbi Brown... and Max factor is what I am using now...but a lighter foundation, not the pan-stick...the more info I have then the better choice I can make. Also if you have any eye shadow/lipstick tricks or "must haves" from the above brands would be useful to know for reference:)

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Fri, September 28, 2007 - 3:29 PMI use Clinique Almost Makeup. It's supposed to be water resistant, so I'm wondering if that would mean sweat resistant too. I've sweated in it before, but it didn't really melt off or anything. -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 4:28 AMThanks Bibia...I just think Clinique is a little out of my price range...come on ladies with all you dancers out there, there must be tons of staying put secrets...thanks to all of you who have answered this post...has been a help already:)

Sat, October 6, 2007 - 11:01 AMPersonally, I LOVE the entire HIP line from L'oreal....and every now & then Walgreens will have a buy-one-get-one-free sale for their entire HIP line, making it much more affordable.

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Sat, October 6, 2007 - 11:03 AMOh! The other thing I'd recommend is theare-quailty makeup like Ben Nye (usually have to buy it from a costume shop or theatrical-supply shop). Basically, it's made to withstand the heat of being under theatre lights, so performances are no problem.

Sat, October 6, 2007 - 9:27 AMwww.maybellinenewyork.ca/caeng...57.htm
Maybelline pure-finish, or something. I just looked at the page but I forget what it's called.
I've exercised with it and everything and it only cost about 7 or 8 bucks. It only rubs off when I wear sunglasses and am sweating, because it rubs off with the rims. Other than that, I've never melted and have worn it in class, it doesn't dry me out and isn't terribly ORANGE either. I use a foundation brush or else it dries too quickly on my fingers. It goes from liquid to powder. I've slept on it and it doesn't cake off or irritate my acne-prone skin.

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Sat, October 6, 2007 - 12:18 PMI find that the L'oreal H.I.P. gel eyliner lasts for ages and wont sweat off- at least for me. I found that the angled brush included was too stiff and a bit uncomfortable, so I tossed it and picked up an artists angled watercolor brush. They dont have to cost a fortune- look at a craft store, they will have artists brushes at a very reasonable price. It took me a while to get used to the gel liner, and I had to experiment to see what I could do with it, but I like the fact that it simply didnt run when I sweat. And I sweat alot- dripping off my chin, nose, dripping from the ends of my 4 feet long hair..................................But my eye liner is perfect!
Oh yes, wash the liner brush each time so the gel liner wont dry in the hairs of the brush and ruin it. Hand soap works ok as well as shampoo. Just remember to rinse well.

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 2:44 PMI have seriously tried everything & I sweat like a beast. It took me forever to gather the info. I have now, & I think sharing is better than hoarding so here it is...for all you sweaters like me:
1) Nail glue on your bindis
2) Do not use sealers..they get nasty.....& I sweat so much I actually would sweat it off....it'd drip into my eyes and burn like hell..neadless to say, I stopped using that crap!
3) go to Makeup Forever's website, unless you are a New Yorker then you can go to the store, order a pan stick in your face color & a pan stick in white & a eyeshadow pallette of black, white, dark brown & light brown & if you can afford it silver, red, blue/teal & a bright green...also order their translusent foundation.
4) MAC has an awesome loose powder that absorbs the light....so get that too. A lot of powders reflect the light & give you white face in pictures. If you tan, at all, get one shade darker than you facial skin tone.
5) Also from MAC: Buy a pot of black eyeliner & the tiney brush to apply it & an angle brush for eyebrows & a foundation brush (to paint on you foundation rather than use a sponge or fingers....it works much much better) & a powder brush.
6) don't foget to pick-up a blush that works for your skin tone as well (from MAC too).
I know it will be expensive, but I can tell you from experience...even if you perform 3-4 times a week...this set-up will last you forever. The pigments, etc. are so awesome...you don't use as much as you do with the target stuff. It is an up-front expense, yes....but it'll end up being the same as re-buying crap make-up over and over at the regular stores.
HOW TO APPLY:
1) Moisturize your face w/ a fav
2) Use foundation paint brush to apply Makeup Forever's found. all over face & neck (go over eyes & eyebrows too)
3) Use face-colored (M.F.) pan stick, w/ you finger, under your eyes & on any blemishes.
4) Use white (M.F) pan stick, w/ your finger, on you upper eye-lids (this will make you eyeshadows glide on, last forever & the colors will pop)
5) Use powder brush to generously apply MAC powder (not over upper eye lids)
6) Apply your (M.F) eye shadow
7) Use angled eyebrow brush & a dark brown or black (M.F.) eyeshadow to draw on you eyebrows (yes, everybody needs to...we all have gaps & need more shape...these kick butt eyebrows will carry your whole eye look from stage to audience)
8) Use eyeliner brush & MAC pot eyeliner to paint on your eyeliner
9) Appy MAC blush to cheek bones & gently/lightly around hair line
10) apply your favorite lipstick with a lip brush (any brand will do for both, but MAC lip sticks are great)..instead of using a lip liner (if you sweat of chew you lips...you'll be wearing nothing but lip liner by the end of your night....lookin like a chola)....DO NOT USE LIP SEALERS OR LIP PLUMPERS....your shit will run girl & you'll look like Tammy Fae
11) LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Apply fake eyelashes (target has awesome ones around Halloween so stock up now!!!!) w/ clear eyelash glue. Before you apply them...bend them many times to get them soft & shaped to your eye curve. Then apply a nice amount of glue from tip to tip...let dry a few seconds...so it gums up & will stick better where you place.......apply the eyelash from the outer edge of your lid to the inner edge........ON YOUR EYELASH BASE...NOT YOUR EYELID...they will curl up all funky if you apply to the lid instead of to the lash base.
HOPE THIS HELPS LADIES!!! I freaken love make-up...sweat a lot & it took me years to get it all together!!!!! -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 3:18 PM"like a chola". best example.

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 12:57 AMThanks..wow thats alot of info... unfortunately don't get makeup forever here...and it would cost my future house to import it to SA...but we get MAC here...and my mom uses the blush...and it literally lasts her like forever (a bit exaggerated...but last ages)...so may be a serious option (will have to save to buy tho) -
-
Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 12:35 PMDefinately worth saving for. It is an up-front investment....but then your good for years.
I am sure you can get something similar to each of the M.F products in MAC. MAC is always the next best choice to M.F. -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 11:58 AMnail glue for bindis! Genius! I popped one of my HiBeam bindis off last weekend (thankfully my friend found it!) and was like, "what the hell do I do if spirit gum won't even work?" Nail glue. Great idea.
And also, where exactly is my 'lash base' and how do I apply my fake lashes there? Is it as close to your lash line as possible, like I always try for? Just curious. -
-
Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Tue, October 16, 2007 - 9:33 AMUnless I'm mistaken, it is on your skin, as close to your lashes as possible. -
-
Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 12:58 PMNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..........!!!! That is where it all goes wrong....
EYELASH BED = ON THE EYELASHES....AS CLOSE TO THE SKIN AS POSSIBLE, BUT NOT NOT ON THE SKIN!!!!!
....AND REMEMBER...ALWAYS START FROM THE OUTSIDE OF EYELID AND WORK YOUR WAY IN.......
Another tip: usually the eyelashes requie trimming....not the eyelash length, but the base that covers the width of the eye.....when trimming always trim the inner eye section...trim one to desired width then lay the other one under it to trim equally!!!
TIPS TO REMOVE & SAVE:::
dIP A Q-TIP IN OIL BASED MAKE-UP REMOVER, CLOSE EYE AND BRUSH, IN A DOWNWARD STROKE, FALSE LASH BASE. WHEN LOOSE GENTLY PULL FROM OUTER EDGE IN...TO REMOVE. IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING ISSUES...GET IN A STEAMY SHOWER!!!! -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 1:03 PMOOOO, YIKES....I hope that nooooooo didn't sound bitchy!!! I just remember how I would struggle for hours when I thought that was the way...get all frustrated & one would end up driing & curling up all funky, touching my eyebrow....NEVER GLUE TO SKIN........you'll just experience a level of frustration I can't explain.............it sucks!!! I just don't want anyone to go through what I did...escpecially right before a performance...there is already enough nerves....don't need to add!!! -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Tue, October 23, 2007 - 6:47 AMActually both methods work for different people. If I put my falsies on my eyelashes they wll slide right off and the glue will pull my real lashes out when I try to remove it, even with oil. I also have massive eye irrittion when I put the falsies on the lashes themselves because they change the way my eyelashes lay. Now, if I put them on the skin, I have none of these problems. They go on like a breeze, I don't have irritation, and they come off without any problems. I can also blend them into my natural lashes easier. So, there is no one right and true way. It is simply a matter of finding what works best for your own body and circumstances. -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Tue, October 23, 2007 - 5:44 PMI know people are gonna throw bottles of makeup at me, but I don't use any MAC. The only thing from MAC that I'd like to try is some sort of a shadow stick that I saw in a video from the thread called "Arabic Eyes." Quite a few years ago, they had a lipstick color I really, REALLY liked, but the MAC counter at my local Dillards never has it so I stopped visiting.
Anyway, for less expensive alternatives, this is what I do. Oh, and this has lasted me through 5 20-minute dance sets!!
For foundation, which I don't use much at all, I use Revlon's Colorstay Active Light. If I need more coverage, like if my skin has gotten a little cranky or if I have darker-than-normal under eye circles, I'll use the Revlon Colorstay concealer on top of the foundation where needed. Of course, if there is any chance I'll be leaving the house before dark, I'll use Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunscreen first!
Then blush is a Revlon creme blush. Then powder (I like Neutrogena's Healthy Defense loose). I'll also use a powder blush over the powder and then add just a wee bit more powder over that. I think layering makeup makes it last longer.
Then I work on my eyes.
For eyes, I'll use Colorstay pencil, followed by that L'Oreal HIP gel/cream eyeliner in a pot. Some have issues with the brush that comes with it, I don't. I like a stiffer brush as I don't "swipe" the liner on. I'm more of a "dabber" with the liner. Then I'll go over with with dark powder eye shadow, followed by the rest of the shadow for lids, highlighter, etc. OH, but before the liner, I will usually do eyelashes.... either a 1/2 strip just at the outer upper lid or just a few individual clusters. I tend to affix them to my lashline, so they are partly on skin, partly on the base of the eyelash hairs. I go over them with waterproof mascara to sort of "glue" it all together.
Final step: Ben Nye Final Seal!! I won't EVER perform without it! I sweat like I have malaria and this is the only thing that keeps it all in place. I'll spray it on my face 3 times. The spray makes a fine mist so whatever spots I don't get the first 2 times are covered by the 3rd. I bought 1 small spray bottle of Final Seal to try it. I liked it so much that I bought a larger re-fill bottle (which I haven't had to open yet).
Removing this stuff requires an oil so you don't yank off the lashes and lose your own. I'll use either Vitamin E oil or Jojoba oil, massaged in with my fingertips and then gently tissued off. I'll follow that with Neutrogena's eye makeup remover to get rid of some of the oil. Then, finally, my normal cleanser.
Bottom line is that I don't think one needs to take out a mortgage for dance makeup. If you have the budget *and* the time to do all the shopping... visiting costume shops, etc., then go for Ben Nye, or Mac or whatever. But I believe there are good products at much more reasonable price points that you can find all in ONE store.
OH... and I heard that the Sonia Kashuk line of cosmetics sold at Target stores are made in the same factories that make department store brands. So, if anyone has any info on that tidbit, I'd love to read about it!

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 6:12 PMI've actually never had problems gluing them to my skin. Maybe it has to do with eye shape and natural lash shape and length? And thanks for the clarification. Tone is so hard to read online, so I wasn't certain what way to take that. :)

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 1:02 PMRevlon's Colorstay Active Light.
I second this recommendation, used it for a party where my makeup would have been sweated off in and hour or so and it stayed put through the entire night <till 5am>when I finally washed up and went to bed. Often times I break out from foundations, especially "long lasting" ones. My skin was fine and dandy not a pimple or any irritation in sight! -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 12:10 AMThanks...the only thing with revlon is that when I did a concert when I was 5-6ish it started my excema...and since I don't want it on my face I have avoided it ever since...so options a bit more limited! -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Wed, November 14, 2007 - 4:10 AMHi
I have just joined this group, so hi!!
I used to wear Estee Lauder's Maximum Coverage foundation and then set it with a loose powder. It looks fresh for up to 18 hours, I sweat a lot and live in hot and sweaty Australia and this make up has outperformed almost any foundation I have ever used. I have found that the aerosol cans of water that are available at makeup counters help a lot too, you can spray a fine mist of water over your face to cool down without messing your makeup up.
Another product to check out is Mirenesse Velvet maxilift foundation (which is what I switched to after the Estee Lauder), it is an Australian brand but they post worldwide, it is great quality and reasonably priced (not an employee, just a fan!) www.mirenesse.com.au this makeup sets to a dewy finish by itself but I usually st it with a loose powder for a matte look. Mirenesse also have the BEST mascara EVER!! sweat proof, smudge proof, fine even for super sensitive eyes, I could go on and on.... -

Re: Sweat resistant makeup
Fri, November 23, 2007 - 2:32 PMFor any kind of foundation, I like to powder with Ben Nye's Translucent Powder. It's what we used for theatre makeup and it sets any kind of foundation (in my experience) pretty well, and holds up to moderate sweating.
For eyeliner/dots/face "tattoos", I love Wet'n'Wild's H20Proof liquid eyeliner. The downside is that if you wear it for more than an hour--sweaty or not--it will be very difficult to remove. The only things I've found that get it off in any kind of reasonable way are baby wipes (not face cloths, but actual baby wipes) and, believe it or not, barbecue sauce (a happy accident at an after-show dinner)--I think it's the vinegar in the barbecue sauce that gets it loose from your skin.
I also use Maybelline's waterproof volumizer mascara. It's not as difficult to remove as the Wet'n'Wild eyeliner, and it holds up to its claims.
Hope this helps,
Katie
