I'm one of those people whose face and forehead get really sweaty as soon as I really start dancing. I do ATS, but don't care for the full turban look; my hair is wavy/curly and I have bangs, which I wear styled smooth, but of course as soon as they get damp, that's the end of that. I usually wear a scarf head wrap with a tribal headband over that, plus the usual clip-on cowrie tassels and braids or yarn/dreadfalls. I don't like the way I look with my hair pulled back without something banglike. Does anyone have any styling suggestions? Too bad the 80s revival look wouldn't work for this- what I really need is a sweat band!

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 4:01 PMSome tribal headpieces drape across the forehead and are on a cloth base. If you wanted to add more padding to that it would be a convenient disguise for a sweat stopper. -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 7:11 PMI second what Chelle said. Maybe you could use terry cloth or even a strip of a micro fiber towel, which is super absorbant.
I wonder if a silicone primer for makeup would create a sweat barrier for you. Just a thought.

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 7:37 PMWhen I say , it drapes across the forehead, I mean *only* across the forehead. There is some good pieces that I know about at the Red Camel (google it, it'll be the first one that comes up). Just look around if you think this might be a good option. :D

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 8:01 PMNo style suggestion, but there are several anti-persperant face powders out in theatre lines (Mehron is one that is frequently recommended) that might interest you. I have also succesfully used roll on anti persperants on foreheads and other body parts besides armpits to help stem the flow of liquid during heavy performances or particullary hot performances. -

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 9:44 AMI'm just chiming in to agree with Sosenda. Anti perspirants... under the boobs, along my hairline (before make-up), it really does help. -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 11:39 AMhmmm - under the boobs - I am now a perky 34 FF (good lord - FF????) and I hate boob-sweat. I'm trying it. -

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:09 PMMy god you ladies are smart! I too have the same problem and never ever thought of using anti persperant anywhere but my arm pits.. I'll try it tonight for ballroom class and see how it works out.. -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 10:15 AMOkay, as a "natural living" person I have to say: be very Very careful when using ant-persperants ladies. Try and find one that does not contain aluminum, and don't use these too often (I see the necessity of needing when dancing, but I wouldn't suggest it any other time besides performances).
The caution about anti-persperant is that it does what it's supposed to do, which is, keep you from sweating. Sweating is a necessary bodily function, a way that your body gets rid of toxins. If this is applied all the time, there is a lot of toxic buildup underneath your skin and can even effect the lymphatic system.
So use it yes, but sparingly please. -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 10:50 AMI tried it last night too and it seemed to help a bit..
Anyone use the mineral stick deodarants? I know there is a medical condition called hyperhydrosis too so maybe we also need to see our doctors about the problem.. -
-
Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 12:38 PMThe mineral sticks work, the one I've used is called Thai Crystal. However, it only controls odor and does not stop perspiration. It is unscented and gentle if that is what you prefer.

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:11 AMI know we need to sweat, but the rest of the body still sweats when you use anti-perspirant on your pits. We just tend to sweat there more because of the location being warmer.
I thought the danger of anti-perspirants had something to do with absorbing one of the ingredients, which science isn't entirely sure is safe? -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 12:37 PMYes, but when you talk about putting deodorant under your arms, on your breasts, on your face... it's easy to see how one could get carried away.
The absorption of aluminum is what scares most people because it has been linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer's. -

I don't know about the breast cancer link, but I've heard repeatedly that the aluminum/Alzhheimer's connection is tenuous at best. The link above says it's unlikely there really is any link.
Of course, you still probably don't want certain metals collecting in your body...

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 9:49 PMI totally agree Chelle. And I often try to opt for the no odor, but still sweat combo myself. But in some cases, like this, it is the physical moisture that is the problem. And I figure once in a while it is ok, especially in the performance type situations. It just can't become a regular thing, and you still have to pay attention to what is in the stuff you put on (and hence in) your body. -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:12 PMWell i've been putting a little bit of deodarant under my breasts, only on dance days and wow what a difference it makes!!! I haven't come home with a wet bra all week.. But another question for you ladies..
Does anyone know where to get unscented talc? I have asked at the pharmacies here and they look at me like my hair's on fire or send me over to the baby powder section.. I absolutely hate the smell of baby powder... I would have thought that in such a scent contisous world that unscented powder and deodarant would be easier to find.. For every 1 type of unscented deordarant there are about 15 scented ones..
And i for one do not want my arm pits to smell like cucumbers, baby powder, chai, vanilla or anything else for that matter!
I'd even order off the internet if i have too... -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 11:27 AMTalc is something else that is supposed to be avoided www.marysherbs.com/Miscella...TalcP.htm
Have you tried just plain cornstarch? -
-
Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 5:17 PMOk so here's what i found...
get Real Baby care - organic talc and scent free... Contains corn starch and rice flour, calcium cabonate(powdered sea shells), baking soda and pink clay.. I bought it in a shop that sells soap making supplies.. It does cost $7.50 for about 5.5 oz.. So i will be using it sparingly.. But i will give it a try and let you know if it's any good... -

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:31 AMWhat brand of roll on anti perspirant do you use when applying to other body areas? Without some specific brand names, I'm sure I'd totally screw it up the first time.

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 2:02 PMI am of that mind that generic is fine. I try to look at the ingredients, and find the stuff with the ingredient to do the job and nothing extra. Or, I just pick up what is already in my drawer (for myself), or let my models/clients know to bring theirs with them.

Re: Sweaty Betty
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 6:36 AMI use any stick antiperspirant that dries clear.

Re: Sweaty Betty
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 4:55 PMYes - this is a very touchy topic for me. I do not like using drugs, perscriptions, or packaged foods. My diet is very healthy. I know first hand what the effects of alluminum are on the brain because of my bio-psych class in college.
I am totally OK with a little BO. People fart, have body ordor, and a little natural dander. BUT...I am a stinky mo-fo. Ladies I'm telling you - I STINK, I mean really really stink. And it's genetic .. my neice has the same problem I do...but oddly my sister and mom do not. I have tried everything - and I mean *everything*. If I go natural, people tell me "girl, you stink" but if I use a chemical (which then smells stinky and then chemically-stinky as it breaks down) I get the aluminum lecture.
The new Secret Clinical used at a 1/4 of the strength every other day works - finally after 36 years of looking - works for me. I just wanted people to know for some one in my situation, it's very tedious to hear the aluminum message. It's gotten so bad, I now lie about it if anyone asks.
Personal message to Chelle...it's not my intent to negate your comments (especially because it was so well written and are 100% true) and my comment is not intended to be "against" you in any any *any* way. Please, if there are any hurt feelings, it is not my intent. -
-
Re: Sweaty Betty
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 6:57 AMNo hurt feelings, I know this is a problem for some people. I wouldn't want to feel like I'm smelling all the time. In today's day and age, it certainly could be quite troublesome.
I only advocate the no-aluminum approach so strongly because that is how my Grandfather got Alzheimer's. It's a sad sad condition, and I wouldn't want anyone else to get it.
That being said, there is always a solution to any health problem I believe. Body odor is caused by bacteria in the body that is released through the sweat glands. I have learned a wealth of resources from my holistic doctor, and it there is one nearby, I'd consider it a worthy investment to visit him/her. If you are like me, and like to avoid prescription drugs, then there is likely a TON of bacteria in your body, just by factor of accumulation. (Btw, apologies if I'm just repeating things others have told you or things you have already tried.)
To get rid of this bacteria, go low on sugars and refined starches. They feed the yeasties and bacteria in our body and help them multiply rapidly. I would also take colloidal silver, it has been known to be a very effective natural antibiotic (Don't take too much though, don't want to end up like a blue smurf). I've heard that zinc does pretty much the same thing as aluminum in the deodorant, so try some with a higher zinc content. Do a yeast/parasite and a liver cleanse. Wash with antibacterial everything. Let me know if you've tried any of these! -
-
Re: Sweaty Betty
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:58 AMYes - I have tried all of these. It's been a problem since before I was 7 years old. It's just the way I'm built I think. -
-
Re: Sweaty Betty
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:07 PMThen I'd say... do what you have to and compensate by doing metal detox every once in a while. I'd also take supplements designed to support the brain and mammary tissues.
Sorry *hugs* :( wish I could be of more help.

Re: Sweaty Betty
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:10 AMI am a really "sweaty betty," and what I've found to work is Secret Platinum protection dries clear antiperspirant and deoderant. I've also used clinical strength antiperspirants as well (ones that close up your pores for example), and I honestly find Secret's Platinum to work just as well.
I have only used those products under my armpits though.
I have really sensitive skin and in order to combat sweat on my face I use facial antiperspirant. You can get it through theater companies, and you can usually apply it over makeup (which I do when I perform at the Ren Faire in the 90 degree heat).
I've also heard of, but never tried, a spray by Ben Nye. I guess it is a spray to make your make up stay put (since makeup sliding down your face can be a problem due to sweatiness). I want to try this stuff, but just haven't gotten a chance to purchase any.
Just my two cents on the issue of the potential dangers of these products --- I think that using these chemical means to enhance one's performance (since, when sweat is REALLY a problem it can actually inhibit you from performing well by running in your eyes, making you feel nasty, and just plain looking gross) is OK. I mean, how often do you perform, and how long will you be wearing the product?
If you do perform a lot and are concerned, I would ask a professional --- a doctor or holistic care provider.
