I'm starting to do performances with my class, and digging through a zipper bag in a dressing room or table somewhere for touchups just isn't working well. I'd like some kind of small case to carry my dance makeup. Something with a handle and a mirror would be excellent.
My needs are simple (just a single set of makeup basics, no hair stuff at all) and my budget is very small, so I don't need any super pro fold-out train cases that would hold a makeup artist's inventory.
Any recs?

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 8:15 PMThis question has come up before.
I've heard of dancers looking in hardware stores for simple small tool or fishing tackle boxes. They're sturdy, have compartments, etc. I personally haven't done that, but to each her own.
Hmmm...maybe check out a craft store for artist/hobby boxes?
I just think that anything "made for" makeup will be priced more than if it's designated for another purpose. -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 1:36 PMHi Sasha, these little boxes are great! I bought one at Walmart for under $3, not for makeup but for earrings. They're in the fishing section and come in different sizes. They work beautifully! -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 3:14 PMIf you can wait until November Walmart always gets in makeup kits/gigs for their Christmas line. I received one as a gift one year and the other dancers all wanted to know where it came from.

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 9:08 PMTry looking for some of the little girls make-up boxes...they might be a bit cheesy, but you can find some that are very workable and of course, all have mirrors...plus, alot of times they'll come with pots of glitter which are an added bonus...I looooves me some glitter! Oh...the best part...cheeeeeeeap!!!

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 9:25 PMI actually found a "soft" case (not made of plastic or other hard materials) at Target that was small and the top folded over and zipped up to close. Upon opening, there are pockets inside that I put in a round mirror (that I purchased separately), safety pins, scissors, a small notebook, double-sided tape and a little sewing box, in addition to make-up, some of my jewelry and my EyeKandy kit. It is small like I mentioned but it sure packs a lot in there! Plus, I believe I only paid something like $10! I spent time going to several stores looking for something small and inexpensive, and I have been happy with this purchase.

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 1:22 AMI have a make-up case that's like a little tool box, except it's light blue semi-opaque plastic. It has a handle on it and a tray that you can take out which means that it holds quite a lot. The only thing it doesn't have is a mirror but you can carry one in there too. I do, however want to get another one that I can take with me to functions which I can also put scissors, safety pins, etc. in for those moments where "just in case" becomes a reality!

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 7:47 AMAs someone else mentioned, tackle boxes are great for this purpose. Also, vintage train cases are usually smaller than the big metal ones we have today and I've seen them very cheap on Ebay and at antique stores. Just a thought. -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 8:58 AMI have thought of going to Joanne's, getting a nice multisized compartmentalized craft supply organizer, and gluing a cheap mirror to the lid. That way, I can glue some pretty fabric, and add one of those cool handles. -

Tue, August 18, 2009 - 9:02 AMI guess that's just if you're feeling crafty and want to make it harder....other great ideas above.

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 11:09 AMNow, before i say anything i want you to know that i realize that this suggestion maybe a bit large. i like the old hard case travel/train cases that women use to use when travelling. They usually have pockets or sewn in elastic bands to hold your things in place and a mirror. They have a large space so you can carry extra anything (shoes, hair thingies, veils, coin belts, bras, sewing kit, safety pins, etc). You can find them at flea markets, yard sales, craigslist, etc. The last one i got as a present (cause now i'm addicted to collecting them! <giggle!>) is a really nice brown leather case that the person got for $3's!
i really hope this helps (but now i'm thinking i should have kept my mouth shut cause everyone is going to be looking for them! <snicker!>)
safe journeys

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 11:22 AMI used to have one, but I just plain wore it out!!! I don't even remember where it came from, now...I'd had that thing ever since I could remember having anything! It finally went off on it's last 'train ride' when I was in my mid-twenties...loooooved that thing! -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 2:03 PMI bought a wooden (oak) trunk at a local quilt show. Larger than a lunchbox, less pre-made compartmentalized than a tacklebox…
But, this way I can carry all of my performance goodies with me. (assuming my costume doesn't need to hang, of course.) When or if I want compartments, I can make them myself to suit my own needs. And I have a nice place to store all the lovely little things between performances.

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 2:19 PMThose train cases are super cute. They *are* too big though, unless I want to store half my costume in there, and then I'm back to digging around. Sigh.
Does anyone have a brand recommendation for me to Google, something that's usually reasonably priced? I know Caboodles, but I associate those strongly with being 13 and wearing hideous makeup and stinky perfume, LOL. Are they any more tasteful these days? -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 7:13 PMhaha...guess the suggestion of a kids case was a bad idea, then? :-D
My train case was actually a bit smaller than the norm, I believe...it was the perfect size to carry around, had a compartment in the bottom for larger things and two removable trays in the top...still got one of the trays, in fact...just wish I could find another case just like it!

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 6:00 AMCaboodles have become AWESOME! I also associated them with sparkly pink plastic and the early teenage years but they make really stylish make-up cases now that fold out and look really lovely. You can also buy train cases from them too. -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 7:11 AMAaaagh!!! Now, why'd you have to tell me that? Now, I'm gonna have to go looking at them! I'm a sucker for cool containers of all kinds! Oh, nooooooooo!!! *sneaks off to find caboodles website* -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 3:34 PMYeah, my Caboodles Train Case was only about $30 at Target -- and people always marvel at the AMOUNT of stuff I can fit in it: 2.bp.blogspot.com/_WOnHE3Ny...G_2110.JPG They have LOTS of different versions, tho... -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 5:32 PMWhoa!!! I like that one! I need a good case to pack my jewelry and such in for when I fly away over the rainbow, and that one would be perfect!!! Do you happen to know if they can be considered carry on luggage on a plane? My sparklies are gonna be kept very close to me, believe me! :-D -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 4:30 PMIt's smaller than my carry-on, so I would think so. :) -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 2:44 PMYes and no. Caboodles does still make the jr-high-esque sparkly pink and purple plastic cases, but they also make some nice looking ones that are hard cases which fold out, and they also have a line of soft cases that sorta look like black aligator skin. -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 9:28 AMI have this one and I love it:
www.caboodles.com//products/
its big enough to hold all of my make up and the metal is really easy to wipe clean if it gets set somewhere questionable. I got it at target, they also have smaller ones that are nice. I bought my sister a purple one with black lace, its a lot smaller but you can still pack a ton into it (last time I looked she had 7 mascaras and 3 foundations, powder, and a bunch of eye shadows and eyeliners)

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 4:25 PMI found a second hand makeup box from a dancers group--You know the typical young girl who takes the combo ballet\tap\hip hop\lyrical dance lessons--check with a dance shop that specializes in recycling childrens costumes and dance stuff --It is the size of a small tackle box- and it has a mirror--works great even though it is pink and has sparkles and stars all over it---(think hannah montanna age group) -

Re: a simple makeup case for gigs?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:51 PMI bought this gigantoid box for my make-up! :-) Keep in mind that if you do continue to dance the list of makeup products you have will get lager and larger. At least that is my own personal experience, but the suggestions on here are correct-o! :-)
