topic posted Sun, April 20, 2008 - 3:25 PM by  Basha
Yeah... I got one.

Not a big deal, except I have to perform next Saturday night! OMG... I haven't been fried like this since I think I was 5 or something when I first moved to California. Well yeah I moved to NJ and have zero *tan* from being covered up all winter. So I went to play with my horse and got roasted, like pushing blistering kind of roasted.

I've been slathering the aloe but any secrets to getting this to disappear by Saturday?

I know once it's burned it's burned and there isn't much to do about it but how do I make it disappear!!!

(please no gratuitous !!!!wear sunblock!!... I know.. .I accidentally left it at home, I usually sport 50 spf and frequent reapplication... I was a lifeguard in 117 degree heat... I looooooovvvveeee sunblock... because I haaaaaatttttteee sunburns! and cancer!)

Thanks for any advice!

owie!!! vinegar will take out the sting.. you'll smell like a pickle for a little bit.. but it works.

also shea butter is good.. goes in deeply & keeps your skin from being too crinkly.. you might be kinda peely by the time you perform, tho.

Cool water washes to get the heat out works for me. My hubby swears by vinegar.

It depends on your base color how long it will take for the red to fade. If the color is still redish and the heat is gone you might consider dusting with powder to tone it down. It will need some green in it to balance the red. You will have to play with it.

    Good luck

I hate it when that happens!
I found two after sun lotions that I adore, and seem to work really well.
Banana Boat Moisturizing Aloe Aftersun Lotion - boasts pure aloe vera and vitamin E. Found it at Wal-Mart.
Hawaiian Tropic Aloe Forever Tan Moisturizer After Sun - this one boasts vitamin E and cocoa butter. Found it at Wal-Mart, too.
The Banana Boat actually made my son's friend's BAD sun burn go away overnight. Literally.
I hope you can find it - good luck!

Take an OTC anti-inflammatory (i.e. Advil, etc.) to help with the discomfort.
Try a lukewarm bath using brewed tea bags. I don't recall why, but it's the one thing my mom used to have us do when we'd get burned from the beach (Jones Beach out on L.I. :o) ). I remember reading somewhere that there is some science to it, but of course, I can't remember where or what that bit of science is.

I don't know why, but the thought of putting vinegar on sunburned skin makes me want to scream! It probably is helpful, but I've never tried it and I would be too afraid to. Vinegar stings my skin when it's healthy... I can't imagine when it's burned or damaged in some way. Is it diluted? Is there a particular type of vinegar you use? Exactly how do you use vinegar on sunburn?

I got a nasty sunburn recently and slathered Aveeno lotion on, which helped a lot, just don't use the medicated kind, which I used at my moms and thought I would claw my skin off!

Oatmeal baths are very soothing, as well.

        Good luck.

All you need to do is brew some strong black tea...regular tea bags are fine...and either add it to your bath water, or even better...get hand towels and soak them in the brew, once it's cooled and put them on the areas that are burned...the tannic acid in the tea pulls out the burn and lessens the sting...plus, it can reduce peeling...

Plain ol tea is wonderful for all sorts of remedies...it also helps itchy rashes and a tea bag placed on a sore tooth can help lessen the pain...

          Good luck...

My kids used to swear by Noxema if they got burned. I always have it in the house. It's very cooling.

Noxzema worked for me, too. I got a doozie of a sunburn in Hawaii, slathered a thick layer of Noxzema on it, and left it on. It took the fire right out of the sunburn.

I also second the use of anti-inflammatories. Cuts the pain and takes down the swelling. And drink lots of water.

I've used vinegar many times after a sunburn and it really works. I admit, it *can* sting a little if the skin is close to blistering or blistered, but it only lasts a few minutes. It also quickly takes the sting out of the burn, and keeps the skin from peeling and turns it a nice tan color. All you have to do is apply white vinegar (I think apple cider works, too) liberally to the affected areas (I use cotton balls).

the tea has tannic acid in it.

It is very soothing for skin irritations. I used it while breastfeeding, get the tea bags damp with warm water, and stick em on!

Same with sun burn... but I prefer either bactine (it stings at first) or the aloe with lidocane (again stings if the burn is reallly bad)

I burn if I look at the sun... 10 min out in the sunshine with spf 50 and I'm already turning pink....

A cold wet towel is best right after you realize your roasted, as you need to drop the internal skin temp to actually stop the cooking. Otherwise the damage can continue to build for hours. Don't put ice on it or run really cold water over it, as that can throw you into shock.

If you have blisters, you made it to a genuine second degree burn. Do not put anything on it that contains oil, petroleum derivatives or the like, as that can hold in the heat and prolong the burning too. You'll want to put a very thin layer of antibiotic ointment on it and then cover the burned area with a light layer of gauze. If the area burnt is more than a few inches (2-3" diameter) you should actually see a doctor as this level of burn can be easily infected.

Drink lots of water and fluids. You've lost an amazing amount of body moisture.

If you really have a 2nd degree burn, you're going to have to face the fact that this will not be gone by Saturday. It might not be as bad, but it could take up to two weeks to heal from this.

    Cold water.
I was in Mexico and fell asleep on the beach. Woke up BRIGHT red - all over my body. I knew I was gonna be in serious pain unless I did something fast. I soaked towels in cold water and laid them on my face, chest and arms. I kept replacing them with more cold towels every few minutes when they reached room temp. I did this for a couple of hours.
It took the heat out and the next day only my legs were burned.

Ya'll are my hero's... here I would have had to spend hour searching for different little remadies....

Ok. So I gotta run to the store for cornstarch for my horse, guess who is grabbing some vinagar... will try the tea thing after the work out this evening. The aloe has been going on pretty much every hour if I can get it. Will probably buy a comercial slather as mentioned above... will most likely be going cool towels as well...

too bad I gotta go stand outside again. Damn. But believe you me... my warm weather underarmor stuff... totally rocking that, full coverage wrist to neck. Plus 50 spf.

      Grumble grumble.

I"ll keep you posted! Blistering seems to have lessoned... they were little itty bitty ones anyway but they seem to be fading with the exception on one patch above the elbow. Although my shoulders are still warm to the touch. BOO hiss!!!

everyone's got the outside covered--aside from drinking lots of fluids, take lots of Vitamin C, and make sure that you're eating a *really* nutritious diet until you heal--whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies, high quality protein. Try not to ingest anything that isn't going to help the situation (no processed foods, extraneous sugar, like that). And seriously--push the fluids!!

Good luck--I burned myself like that two days before my senior prom. Blisters all over my face and chest. :-P But while I was still pinkish on prom night, the blisters were all gone. Thanks, Mom! (this is her advice, btw)

I recently had a similar issue. Last weekend was unseasonably sunny and warm at the Oregon coast. I did have sunscreen on, but got a little pink in the spots where missed rubbing in sunscreen, so basically along my hairline and t-shirt line. Granted it wasn’t a bad burn, but I did find Burt’s Bees After Sun cream very soothing and I also drank plenty of water.

I had a performance a few days later, and wore a long sleeve top and put on some extra jewelry to help camouflage what had become funky, splotchy tan lines. I also brushed on some extra glitter and a touch of bronzing powder to my face, chest, belly and back to try and make things less noticeable. That, plus the dim restaurant lighting seemed to do the trick.

Don't forget--you can warm the water up. :-) Herbal tea, if you like it, counts. And frankly I've been grooving on a mix of hot water, a little bit of honey, and a splash of apple cider vinegar; good for a sore throat, and strangely refreshing!
Fruits and veggies are, obviously, loaded with water, so that helps, too. And soups! Cold weather=soups! :-)

Mentholated shave cream for a fresh burn- rub it in and leave it. Noxema is also good. However, once its burned, it cant be un-burned. Try using soothing moisturizers, slather them on. Cool water rinses frequently. Cool, wet compresses. What ever you do- good luck.

    Basha,

Speaking as one who used to get soooo sunburned that I got huge blisters the first things is to get rid of the heat in the skin, then 2 get your body heathy. You have to recoer from the shock of the burn and rehydrate. Then worry about your color. If still red on saturday and your skin can hadel hit cover with fabric or dust with powder like I mentioned above.

If not go ahead and play up the red, really... make the rest of your skin red. LOLBut then if your skin is still red maybe you should consider if you should be dancing at all. Because if your skin is still red you may over heat easily. But you should be fine in all truth but it is something to keep in mind.

Wellll children, it has been officialy two days (plus the serious attach of aloe vera Sunday night) and the red is totally going down. I can tell my skin isn't really happy yet and it's still kind of tender. But it doesnt' look roasted!

I have thus far for you curious folk... treated my skin with:
      -lots and lots of water (inside){
-lots and lots of aloe vera (applied daily and almost every time I go pee)
      - tea bath with black tea
-wiped down with vinegar a handful of times.

I'll keep you posted as to what the status is on Saturday for the final thing-amagigger. =) thank you so much ladies!
