There is a medical adhesive that you can use made by kryolan. I get mine at a local costume shop. SUPER hypo-allergenic and holds anything to your skin until you want to take it off. It's not cheap (almost $30 a bottle) so make sure you close it really tight when your done or it will become rubber cement... LOL

Hi! I read your post in regards to the different glues and I am curious as to what you use. I have been using Bond 527 multi-purpose cement from the craft store but have found that some times the stones peel off from the backing. I only use autrian crystals so I don't need to worry about the backing. Should I use the E600 or do you recommend something else. I make the bindis for our troupe and would like them to last. :)

No, I think they were talking about Olive Oil (to *remove* Spirit Gum) being in most of our kitchens. Spirit Gum is a special adhesive mostly used in theatrical circles to apply/adhere everything from fake beards (hair) to fake scars (latex). When I first started I used an exacto knife, but I found that it was difficult to get a smooth edge around the rhinestones. This is likely because the backing I use is thicker than what Sandi uses, for example. I quickly switched to regular scissors, which work fine.

X-acto works OK, but I find applique scissors work best. I suppose manicure scissors would work well too, although I've never tried it personally.

i got some backing stuff the other day so i can try making my own i'd imagine an x-acto knife would be the best way to go about it, though i haven't tried it yet =p also, i figure you'd probably sketch out an idea or something and put it together and then cut around it

What do you use to trim the backing? The only thing I can think of that's not so big is a Xacto knife. Everything else I'm thinking would leave raised/warped ridges around the edges. Ideas?

I put flat-backed gems directly on my skin after using foundation/powder. I haven't really had a problem with them coming off. I do use a fixing spray (the one by MAC), so that could make a difference. I just use some eyelash glue to put them on.

Sure you can! I do it all the time... Just use eyelash glue and make sure the spot on your skin is clean. It works even when you sweat :)

If the bindi backing is made of acetate, you may have a problem with spirit gum. But if its vinyl, it'll be fine. Bellatrix is right on the money with the olive oil to clean the backs, after you've wiped all of the skin/make-up/spirit gum mess off of the vinyl back, dip a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and give the vinyl back a wipe. That will clear any oily residue so that you won't have a problem getting it to stick on next time.

Yes, oil will dissolve sticky stuff. Wax, spirit gum, glue, etc.

Sometimes spirit gum will dissolve the backing of a bindi. Be sure to clean it off when you're done wearing it. I lost a gorgeous HiBeam this way.

I make my own bindis and I'm wondering...how do you get all the gunk off of the back of it? I use spirit gum to put them on but when I take it off, there is a tendency for dead skin cells and make-up to go with it. any suggestions would be awesome...I don't like how dirty it looks afterwards :(~

this sorta goes along with the discussion,, but, i was talking with a friend about the use of SG vs. eyelash glue. she said the sg holds on to her skin real well, but peels of the bindi. she says its like using glue. ideas?

I started making bindis a couple of years ago. I've only used plastic rhinestones so far; I haven't had any problem with the backing 'melting' off or anything of that sort. The glue I use is from Michael's - GemTac, I think it's called. For the base, I use clear plastic report covers - the thick type (probably 0.25-0.5mm), not the flimsy file pockets/sleeves. With my first couple of attempts I used an exacto knife to cut out the bindi (after the glue dried, of course), but I find that scissors work better. I use eyelash glue to apply and I've never had a problem (although this could be because the plastic rhinestones are lighter weight than glass).

I make Big Ass Bindis ( www.BigAssBindis.etsy.com ) I can give you a few suggestions: If you are using rhinestones purchased from the craft store, they are made of plastic or acrylic and they are mirrored (silver backing) in different ways depending on the quality of the rhinestone. E600 can disolve the silver backing and give the rhinestone a cloudy, crackled look. Not something you have to worry about if you use glass stones, but glass stones are significantly more expensive and aren't as easy to find in stores. I use 4 different adhesives, what you are glueing and what you are sticking it to is what determines what type of adhesive to use. Experiment with stuff to see what holds and doesn't damage your stones or your backing. Use Spirit Gum, not eyelash adhesive to glue them onto your skin. Eyelash glue works fine to re-use the sticker type bindis from India because they are so light-weight. Handmade bindis tend to be heavier and spirit gum can handle the weight. Olive oil on a cotton ball will wipe the spirit gum residue off of your skin without having to pick at it or rub hard. Besides it's something most of us have in the kitchen anyway. (I remove my eye make-up with it too).

E6000 sells at Michaels or any craft store really. ALso, Spirit gum works the best to glue bindis or whatever on the face. I recommend the spirit gum remover as well because it can be hard to take off with soap.

hi Ayperi, well, i have had the pleasure of talking to Sandi at HiBeams and she gave me her "secret" and now im gonna tell ya. buy some clear table cloth, like vinyl. there is also a certain glue called E6000, this is what you want to use. dries really quick on your fingers though. also, use this sparringly as a little goes a long way. find some stuff to glue and your on your way. plan on experimenting for your first 5-6 and then you sorta get the hang..this glue kinda lets you put almost anything on your head. i use a little eye lash glue to wear and your good to go...when you get some made, post and lets see. have fun!
