A friend has asked me to make her some bits and pieces for her hair but she has very short hair (about 1" - 2" long) so I'm not really sure what to do. I've seen a lot of people with shorter hair wearing things attached to hair bands but I don't know which type of band to use. Do you attach your falls to the end so they hang at the sides or in the middle so it falls to the back? She may get away with small clips but the style of falls and things that she wants are really heavy and I don't think clips would hold them in. Her children bought her a beaded cap for the last hafla we performed at and she did say I could try and attach stuff to that but I'm wary of damaging it. All suggestions and ideas welcome!!

Mon, October 13, 2008 - 8:08 AMFake hair bun fall? As long as she can figure out how to attach a fake bun, and as long as you can attach stuff to a fake hair bun…

Re: Short hair
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 10:27 AMI use a kind of elastic that is labeled "no-slip", I think made by Scunci. It is constructed from a flatter elastic, and has a line of silicone around the inside, and they really stay put. But my hairpiece is on a velcro wrap, and also attached to a ribbon, so once I get my own hair into a little ponytail, I wrap the long piece in place and wrap and tie it on. It stays securely. But 1-2" is really short, and I doubt she could make ponytails at all.
My cowrie falls are on tiny jaw clips, and they hold well, too, but we're back to the very short hair. Anything she attaches will probably fall to the sides and expose her short hair, so I'm not sure what to suggest, aside from learning to work with what she has and maybe attaching a couple long dangly pieces. I like the mini jaw clips, and toupee clips.

Re: Short hair
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 10:42 AMI have taken the easy way out; I use a braided wig that I have added beads, cowrie falls right into the braids themselves and I sewed in a headband with a beautiful tribal piece. This way, there will be no issues when performing, no slippage whatsoever, no matter what movement I am doing; spinning, back bends, etc. -

Re: Short hair
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 12:02 PMOn the back of the short hair topic does anyone know where I can get a nice but not hugely expensive 3/4 wig as my short hair looks weird with bellydance gear lol -

Re: Short hair
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 2:33 PMCall a local salon that does weaving (extensions) and ask them where to buy them (or where to buy hair wefts/tracks -- they usually sell 3/4 wigs in those same places too). I would not advise buying one over the internet sight-unseen if you are trying to match your actual hair color...really hard to do that very well via pictures.

Re: Short hair
Mon, October 13, 2008 - 2:38 PMthe best place for the 3/4 wig is ebay, believe it or not.
I but all my wigs from there. Or a local beauty boutique that carries all sorts of wigs, we have one called "Diva's".

Re: Short hair
Tue, October 14, 2008 - 2:23 PMI have a very short bob and had even shorter hair before. I create small ponytails or a single ponytail and build on that. I can get a lot of falls on behind the elastic band. To create a smooth look and to hide all the short bits that I can't get into the bands I either use a tribal band or gel my hair smooth.

Re: Short hair
Wed, October 15, 2008 - 1:45 PMBefore I had enough hair to pull back and add fun things to, I made yarn falls and attached them to a head band. Then covered the part where the head band met my real hair with a folded bandana that I decorated with shells and such. I haven't moved some of those picture onto tribe but you can check it out on myspace here viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm
It was kindof heavy...but I liked the way it looked and it worked for me. :) Hope that helps! -

Re: Short hair
Mon, October 20, 2008 - 9:40 AMThanks guys :) You've certainly given me some ideas to work with. I hadn't thought of a wig but her hair is certainly short enough to take it. We'll do some experimenting!!
