eye issues

I know this is a huge WIDE subject and its a shot in the dark but I was just curious what others thoughts were as I have pretty much exhuasted my ideas... without seeing a dr.

A week ago last thursday I had some nasty reaction which I assumed was a bug bite to my left eye, it was itching and I realized it was a lot more itchy than a regular 'my eye is itching' kind of itch. And shure enough w/in 20 minutes my left eye was all puffy- well the area around the eye rather... was all puffy top and bottom- not so bad I couldn't see but pretty bad.

Left work early and applied ice and benedryl, and it kind of died down.

Next morning my RIGHT eye is all puffy. (and no sign of bug bite on the other eye)

Saturday had another weird reaction and I actually was up half the night between the itching the drugs and the ice. Nothing massivefor the following days- a few slightly baggy looking eyes worse than normal but nothing outrageous.

Woke up yesterday morning (so 8 days later than the first episode) early to make breakfast nothing. went back to sleep and woke up 4 hours later with a swollen left eye.

WTF.

I've changed/replaced my most used eyeliner/mascara combo's but I really don't think it has anything to do w/ make up since I don't wear it consistently and there hasn't been a direct link- I can still wear make up and have no adverse reaction.
Food combinations have been staying the same and I can't think of anything I've eaten over the past week thats bad or unusual for me (roommie has bad acid reflux so our diet is pretty boring for the most part)
I've never shown any allergies to flora and fauna- also by the fact I woke up yesterday went back to sleep and woke up w/ a puffy eye... all in a mostly pet free room with no plants and I didn't go outside.

Any thoughts? I'm about ready to see a doctor but its hard to justify that- I mean its sporadic and its just puffy- a lot of itch has not happened, just random swelling. Any thoughts ladies?

Maybe it's your sheets? You could have developed a reaction to the soap you use to wash your sheets. Perhaps try switching to a non-fragrance. non-dye laundry detergent to wash your sheets in? Just a guess....trying to think what you would have come in contact with when you went back to sleep...

i really suggest seeing a doctor. When it comes to your eyes, please don't take chances. But if you really want to avoid it, I would get some saline solution (like the kind that you use with contacts) and rinse your eyes well. Lay in the tub and just stream the saline around and in both eyes. Use a lubricating eye drop, one that will coat the eye.

I would use Zyrtec first, it seems to be a little more helpful for the focused allergy attacks. If not, good old fashioned benadryl will be ok. Take a pill form, don't rely on any creams, especially around the eye.

    Hope this helps...
    Alison.

I use wool lyte- fairly 'harmless' as far as detergents are concerned- but I made sure that I changed my sheets and things too which was weird. tried to clean as soon stuff started happening but the locations have been so random-work, home Medieval times home. yeah its messed up.

Yeah I probably should see dr- just dragging my feet I hate going- figured I would start with some other peoples thoughts on it.

I have been using the pill form plus some cream (as far 'away' from the eye as possible but still getting the puffy stuff)...

ugh... boo for reactions! thanks for the ideas though.

My boyfriends allergic reactions always show in puffy eyes. We found out its either a reaction on the earring (silver often has a part of nickel and he is allergic to that)- and it usually shows on the opposite side (earring left, right eye swollen). He also seemed to be allergic on some fabric softenener so we had to rewash bed sheets and towels. In both cases the swelling was gone in a matter of a few days.

Zyrtec seemed to have helped him, too.

Before you do an allergic test at the doctors you could experiment with some stuff. I heard the test for chemicals are pretty nasty and are made over the whole of your back. It might be an old way of testing though.

Nope- its not, my roommate has had some really really bad acid reflux (influencing her lungs/breathing as well) and they sent her to an allergy asthma person- the pricks all over your backs + chemicals is still the way they do it- I think we did that two months ago maybe? I went w/ her for moral support.

Not thrilled w/ the idea of going myself. Been clear since Friday morning- need an appointment for something else so probably just try to kill two birds with one stone.

well, if you see an allergist, they are going to do the spot tests on your back. It is just a small injection of reactive stuff, to see if your histamines get all out of whack. I would definately see your primary care physician first. Get this under control first, then go see a specialist.

I hope this gets better, I know eye stuff is a pain. My bro got herbicide in his eyes a few years back and it was a nasty reaction. His irises were actually spasming and he couldn't see a thing until they quit. Please be careful when it comes to your eyes!!

not to scare ya or anything but this sounds very similar to a condition my mother had a while ago. she had all the same symptoms but eventually they started getting really bad & no 'clear breaks" in between. she thought it was pink eye until she got to the docs. she found out that for some crazy reason her immune system was an invader & was trying to kill it! isn't that crazy? apparently your immune system can turn against you. but all she needed was some steroids (came in a pill form & she just took them till the bottle ran out) and then she was fine afterward.

Well I called and tried to set an appointment up- no go for right now... but its been 5 days since the last reaction so this is good.

Already ruled out pink eye on a preliminary symptons- saw a lot of pink eye in military school so I figure I got a handle on what it is.

Going to try to call again tomorrow to get it straightened out and into the primary care doc. thanks for all the support guys- eyes are such a pain when they go wonky
