I dyed my hair with henna! I love it! I have been having reactions to hair dye availble in stores. It was horrible. It caused me to have welts and blisters (no, I did not leave it on too long) and my hair is so fine that it was really messing it up. I tried the henna and my scalp and hair look and feel great! I just ordered the henna, mixed with lemon juice, smeared it in my hair and left it in a few hours, washed it out with plain water AND I LOVE IT!!!! For more info.

Sorry to resurrect a thread, but I'm going to try this sometime this week and had a couple (possibly weird) questions that The Henna Page doesn't answer (at least that I can find)--

    1. Did the henna dye your scalp at all? I know with normal hair dye the reccomendation is to smear vaseline around your hairline to prevent drips on your face, but my assumption is that the henna would dye the scalp too.

    2. Did the henna react to heat? When I do henna on my skin, if I'm active or out in the sun the day after the paste flakes off, I think the design darkens as my skin warms up. I use heat on my hair occasionally, and I'm wondering if the henna will darken/brighten when I decide to straighten my hair.

    Any advice is appreciated--thanks!

When you say "straighten", I assume you mean with an iron, as opposed to chemically? Because henna coats the hair and might make it less permeable to chemicals; I know you cannot dye over it. But my guess is that once you wash the paste out of your hair, using a straightening iron on your hair will not cause any further color change. And it will tint your scalp, but it basically makes it kind of orangey, and this will shampoo out over a couple washings. You should wipe off any visible drips while you're letting the henna develop on your head.

You can dye over henna. I let it fade out then dye over it. I have had no problems. Also, it does not color my scalp. Maybe my skin tone is pink so I don't really notice the orange, but I have had oopa loompa hands post dying, so gloves and clean up are a must, but as for the dye being terribly noticeable on my scalp I would say no.

I would also avoid anything you get at Sally's saying that it's henna. I use the Caca Rouge from Lush and I would recommend just going with body art quality henna 100% of the time. I like the Lush stuff, but I have seen MUCH better color from body art stuff.

Henna is often used to dye skin, so don't forget that.

Watch out with dying your hair with other dyes after you've done henna. If you do that with to little time between dying, your hair can get green.

But otherwise: I love henna! It's not toxic, I really prefer the more natural cent of cowdung instead of the chemicals. And it's cheap!

      Namir-

Be prepared to have an orange scalp for a little while. The skin on your head is thin enough that it doesn't last too long but it will be colored at least for a little while. Mine usually lasts through the first few washings. Just be careful when you're applying it. I have a friend apply mine since my hair is so long and as soon as she gets it all in my hair and I'm wrapped up with shrink wrap, I go to the bathroom and wipe off the drips on my forehead, ears, and neck. If it does stain those areas, I've found that my facewash takes it off pretty well, anything with an exfoliant should. I would also recommend rolling an towel up and draping it across the back of your neck to help catch any drips. Don't forget to take out your earrings, necklace, ect. henna's a pain to get outta the little bits in some of them.

Henna does react to heat. those first few days are the important ones. Heat applied during that time will darken the henna a little because it's still dying your hair. After that it won't make too much of a difference. Your hair will also get darker the more times you henna it and eventually will eventually stop at a certain color. I too am assuming you're talking about a straightening iron here. Don't try to chemically dye, straighten, perm, ect.... it will end badly!

Did you go to the "freebie" page????? Go there and order the CD!!!!! There are even recipes to change the color of your henna dye by adding tea or coffee! Of course you have to experiment on your hair to see what colors you can get with YOUR hair, but that is half the fun! If your computer is fast and you don't want to wait, you can download the free ebooks yourself on the freebie page.

As far as drips, I wrap my henna covered hair in plastic, (shower cap with plastic wrap around the edges), then wrap an old towel that I don't care if it gets stained around my head. That keeps it warm and doesn't let the color get away from you. (yes, it will be darker if you warm it, but I have only "warmed" it by keeping it wrapped in a towel!!!! Experiment, because it will be different on each person. Find a few ways that you like to do it, make notes, share notes, and if you get tired of one, try a different one!

      Have fun!

Henna will dye your scalp temporarily, but it disappears/wears away in a few days.
The tell tale ring around the hairline can be avoided by using vaseline on the skin.
We recommend that once you have the henna on the head, wrap in saran, cover with a towel, and wait for a few hours before washing.
Yes, heat will help, but you must keep it moist by using saran or a shower cap.
Once the henna has dyed the hair, applying heat later on will not make it darker.

Have you tried a dye called Hennalucent? It is basically henna that is made to go on hair. I know you can get it at Sally's Beauty Supply. It might help with the burning and whatnot and will last longer than regular henna. :)

I haven't really had good results with henna labled 'for hair' but it might have just been my hair. I've had a significantly better results with the artist grade henna so that's what I use now.

I use the regular henna. Just mix with lemon juice and plaster it on your hair!!!!! I love it! I never tried the stuff that is FOR hair. It seemed like it was more expensive, so I just tried the henna I had for my skin. It works great! I have only been going for the reddish color it normally gives, but I am going to try changing the color with tea and coffee sometime this year.

You can also use orange juice for a less harsh mix on your hair.
Adding or mixing with tea, coffee, beets, or spices will not change the dye color in the henna.
If you like to add these for scent that is great and can be lots of fun.

Hennalucent is a compound henna dye...with metals added!!! If you've got any kind of chemical process in your hair before you use this stuff, you might as well go ahead and shave your head...it will turn baby poo green and start breaking!!!

I ADORE henna, and I've been using it for a few years now. I use Rhajistani henna, as it's a nice bright red with purple undertones on my hair. I mix it with red wine (acid to break down the dye cell walls), honey (gives it a nice gooey texture), black tea (tannins increase the intensity of the color and transmit the dye faster) and add some cinnamon and paprika spices for color and scent. It's foolproof, makes a gorgeous color every time and keeps my coarse, curly hair healthy and soft!

Well, Saturday was a success!...Went a little further past 'strawberry blonde' than I wanted to, but otherwise I'm very happy with the result. I wandered around my apartment with my head wrapped in plastic and a stocking cap for about two hours, then rinsed with conditioner...ah, lovely, shiny soft (kinda orange) hair! I used body-art henna from my local Indian grocery store, lime juice, black tea, and a little paprika.

Next time I'll have to add something to alleviate the smell. Normally I don't mind the vegetative scent of henna on skin, but I guess with how long it was 'cooking' on my hair the smell changed....sour and kinda tomato-y, but that's something to work on.

    Thanks for your tips, everyone!

I don't know whether I'd bother with the tea and paprika next time. I've always just used lemon juice by itself, adding it to the powdered henna the night before, let it set for something like 8-12h, and then apply to my hair.

If you want more brown, consider using indigo in your dye. Wait... you say you want 'strawberry blonde' in that case I would use the plain henna mixture and then just not leave it on for very long.

Be careful of the brands of henna... www.hennapage.com has an image of packages from reputable henna mfg. I did her test on the MDH brand and it had the green dye bits in it. I've been using the 'Jamila' brand.

Some henna products smell better or worse than others.
It should have the green smell, but not a bad smell.
Try mixing with orange juice and using a different brand of henna.
      Maybe that will help.

Okay...not having the box that my henna came in, anymore...and not having all the stuff to do a test with...

The henna I have came with extras, like the lemon juice...eucalyptus oil...and said to mix it with either water, coffee or tea...and it recommended leaving the henna on from 24 to 36 hrs...

Does this sound like pure henna, or 'body quality' henna? I'm seriously considering using it on my hair...

I've never left it on that long. I usually go for about 3 or 4 hours depending on how long I can stand it. I really don't know anything about boxed henna though, I buy mine bulk from a little herbalist store in Santa Cruz.

Oh, well that's for on the skin, not the hair...it came from a couple henna kits that I got and never used...it came from my herbalists shop, so I was thinking it was probably the real stuff...just wish I'd saved the boxes...

Okay...I got henna in bulk from my herbalists shop and just did it today...not alot of change in the colour I already had, but I can tell my roots are now refreshed and my hair feels thick and soft...a bit fuzzy, at the moment, cuz I combed it all out straight...my hair has just enough wave in it that when it dries straight, it looks too poufy...I usually wait till after my hair has already dried to brush it out.

Anyhow...gonna add a pic to my profile...see what you think.
