My friends and I are walking/dancing in a local parade this weekend to promote belly dance classes in our area. We are trying to wear a variety of costumes and I am probably going to wear a "Gypsy" style costume with a white peasant-style top, purple 25-yard skirt and a fringed hip scarf. I don't have a clue what to do with my hair and makeup. Any suggestions?

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Thu, July 10, 2008 - 10:14 AMYou could always go with the stereotypical look as seen on Esmerelda in Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame".....with a kerchief tied over your hair and then going for a very dusky eyed, and pouty look. It is pretty, and of course it's debatable if it is authentic at all....LOLOL but whoever said we have to be historically correct, eh?

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Thu, July 10, 2008 - 11:26 AMyou might want to consider if there are many Rom on your area, because i have heard a lot of people get very offended when non Romany things are labeled Gypsy, and you probably don't want to have to deal with the flack from that. just a thought to keep yourself from having a head ace. ^_^ -

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Thu, July 10, 2008 - 7:24 PMI don't believe we do have many Rom in our area, but I want to fully respect their culture. That's why I put "Gypsy" in quotes. I was going for the archtypical Gypsy fantasy look. I may go with the headband idea (very nice!), or I may just put my hair up in bun since it's going to be so hot. I checked out the sock-bun video that was recommended here and it is fabulous! I have very straight, fine hair and have never been able to do anything with it, but it actually stays in the bun! I'm so excited I may wear it this way to work the rest of the summer :) The ideas I've gotten from everyone since I joined this tribe just a week ago have been fabulous. You all rock!

Thu, July 10, 2008 - 3:23 PMYou could wear your hair down and use a headband decorated with coins or chains.

Fri, July 11, 2008 - 6:43 AMMaybe take some cues from this dancer...the hair might not be doable, cuz let's face it, we can't all have hair as fabulous as she...but the make-up and overall look would be perfect...

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:03 AMOh, I totally love how in the first part of that she has the fringe from the head scarf acting like part of her hair in the front, it took me a few seconds to realize she didn't have totally kick ass teal into black hair, but that it was a scarf!!

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:15 AMWe do a dance on goblets that was taught to me by my first instructor. I have never actually thought to look it up to see if I could find clips of other dancers doing the same! Thanks for posting this! *Bounces off to find YouTube clips*

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:27 PMYep, I found that one after I bounced off! When we first did our goblet routine, I researched dancing on glasses...(this was before YouTube) and had found written descriptions of actually moving while on the glasses. It is extraordinarily dangerous and needs intense precision. One imperfection in your dance surface and you are facing some serious injury. I think I will stick to my stationary goblets...not like that within itself does not hold some danger!
I don't do that routine often, but I do pull it out when I am looking for soemthing to perform with a little more oomph to it! I think I might have a photo of my first performance on the glasses in my profile. You can tell by my thinner stature just how long ago that actually was!
Thank you for the link to that tribe, I had not seen it. I will have a fun time checking it out!

Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:48 PMI found that vid, quite a while back...I love her dancing and oh, my, but what I wouldn't give to have that white scarf that she dances with, at the end.

Re: Hair/Makeup ideas for "Gypsy" costume?
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 12:04 PMSmokey grey eyes & a strong lip? Bed-head hair, spritzed with spray gel for body, (twirled loosely with fingers) then pulled into a low teased bun... A single large rose tucked in at the side & BIG hoop earrings? Good luck! -
