False Lashes

I bow to you, Divas of False Lashes…

Today was my first time trying. It took longer than expected to get them on. And they were weird but fine for a while. Then I looked in the mirror… The inside corners of BOTH eyes is pure red. And as the day has worn on, they're getting drier and scratchier. My eyes, not the lashes.

So what are the secrets? There's got to be secrets. There's always secrets.

Do you use the stuff that came with them, or is there better stuff? What about gals with dry eyes naturally? Is there a time limit to keep in mind?

(I have been wearing them since about 6:30 this morning, which was several hours ago.)

So far my favorite brand of lash is Red Cherry. I find that they curve to fit the shape of my eye best and hold up well.

Try shaping the lash by bending it around a pencil before you apply them. This gives them a curve that is more natural to the shape of your upper lid. Also, don't over-load on eye lash glue it takes less than you may think. I find that when I use a little too much glue it irritates my eyes more than usual. Let the glue set on the lash for a moment before you try to place it.

What I try to do when I place the lash is get the middle of the lash in the right place so the inside edge isn't too close to my tear duct. Getting the lash too close to the inside of your eye can cause irritation as well. Then work from the middle outward with an orange stick or the flat, handle end of a pair of tweezers to press the lashes into place.

It takes practice; the first time I tried I was very frustrated and nearly gave up, but stick with it. Over time and a little trial and error you will find the method that works for you. Now, I can pop them on in a minute flat.

    Good luck.

First, make sure that you've cut the lashes to the appropriate length - lashes are not one-size-fits-all & they'll need to be trimmed to your eyelid length of they could irritate your eyes. To measure where to cut, hold the lash up with the "fat" end starting at the outside corner of your eye & measure across your lid. You're going to want to cut the "thin" end so the lash stops just past your iris (on the inside side of your eye) when you're looking forward.

Second, like was said above, the amount of lash glue could be irritating your eyes. I use the Andrea brand of lash glue, but use a VERY small amount. If you're squeezing it straight from the tube onto the spine of the lash, then you're using too much. I'd recommend squeezing a bit of glue onto a surface (like the plastic thing your lashes come on), then using a toothpick, the end of a bobby pin, or the end of a safety pin to dip into the glue & then draw a THIN line of glue onto the lash spine.

Third, make sure that your lashes aren't hanging down too far into your field of vision - which can both make them feel "weird" and can cause them to irritate your eyes. After they're on & secure (ie, the glue has dried), use a lash curler to curl back the falsies (it can be tricky getting the big ones into the curler, so be patient, you don't want to rip them back off by accident). THEN apply mascara (black, brown or clear), which will help the falsies adhere to your natural lashes, enabling them to both move at the same time when you blink (in turn making them more comfortable & longer-lasting).

If you've tried all these steps & you still have issues, then you might be sensitive to the glue. You might need to look for medical-grade adhesive - it's expensive & hard to find, but your eyes will thank you. As far as how long to wear them, only you can tell that. If it goes past "weird" or "uncomfortable", then please take them off. Your eyes aren't something you should mess with, not at any cost.

I purchase glue from walgreen's (drug store), and I let it dry for about 30 seconds (so that it's tacky rather than drippy) before putting the eyelash on my eyelid. This minimizes the amount of glue that gets in my eyes.

I also put the faux lashes on my lid, and then gently curve my fingers around the natural shape of my eye to help the lashes take on that shape. I hold my fingers there until the lashes seem secure. Then, if they're irritating me, I either:

    a) trim the lashes

    b) try again

    c) get a different brand of lashes for next time

I also put in eye drops before wear pretty much always.

Yeah, I just close my eye most of the way and position the lash just above my natural lashes, careful that the inside corner isn't going to bug me, and then just gently press it in place with my fingers until it's secure.

I use Duo glue. So far I find it's the best. I do have dry, sensitive eyes and I've never had a problem with it. As the others said you may need to trim them. Also, once you get the glue on the lash strip you need to soften the strip by taking each end of the lashes and sort of bending them in a 'U' shape sort of back and forth before putting them on. I always get the outer end on first , then the inside edge and then the middle. I've had some on my top and bottom lashes today for Halloween since 10 this morning and didn't take them of til about 8 tonight and had no problems except for being tired of feeling the feather lashes I had on the bottom rubbing on my cheek.

Good luck hun. They're lots o' fun! Just takes some practice and getting used to. Also, if these ideas don't work for you, maybe try the individual lashes and see if you like those better.

I have really sensitive eyes...so I feel your pain.

I trim my lashes ALOT. Infact the false lashes dont even come close to the corner of my eyes. ...It's say about a finger's with is left between the end of the lash and the corner of my eye, and then I use mascara to fill out the lashes near the inside...really you can barely tell they're trimmed that much.

I tried going all the way across my lashes-line with false lashes, but I had the same problem you did...Since I started trimming them, I havent had that issue, and I've moved onto wearing all sorts of crazy ass lashes. (I LOVE my new polka-dot feathered ones)

As for glue, I use Lash Grip...it came with the false lashes, but I know they sell it seperately too. It doesnt bother my eyes at all.

I have a quick question about false lashes...I hear different things...do you put the makeup on first? Or after you apply the lashes?

Everyone differs on this, but for me, I put the makeup on first (except mascara) - the last thing I do is the lashes, then mascara. Mostly because havin gthe maekup underneath the lashes can disguise if you don't get the lashes on perfectly up next to your natural lashes. If you do the lashes first & don't get them right up against your natural lash line, then you could have this space of skin between the two and trying to get eyeliner in there at that point is, well, difficult at best. And if you aren't able to, then it can really ruin the look. And I can say that I've never had the issue of lashes not sticking because they were on top of makeup - no matter how much makeup I had on - so that shouldn't be an issue.

I put everything on except the mascara and final eyeliner. I do this, so if they're not perfectly on I can usually disguise any imperfections with my liquid liner and it looks fab. Then finally the mascara. Everyone does differ on this, you'll have to play around a bit to see what your most comfortable with. I did this and found that to work best for me.

Many years ago I wore two and three pair of lashes every day. For me it was everything up to eyeliner- lashes first, then liner to "fool the eye" and disguise any mistakes. then mascara to "glue" real lashes to fake. Try different brands of glue to find what works best for you.

All right… Is mascara just for your own lashes in the places where you've cut them, or is it "customary" to use your own lashes along with the falsies?

Main reason I'm asking – I have very thin, blond lashes. You don't even know I have them if I don't wear any mascara, and I often don't. I was using the false lashes to look like lashes w/o using mascara on my own.

What about when you use crazy color and weird-sparkly false lashes? Mascara even then? (I realize everyone is different, but I'm trying to get as much varying info as I can.)

        Thanks for sharing, everybody!

Personally, as I said above, when wearing false lashes, I use mascara purely to help my lashes adhere to the falsies. If you're wearing false eyelashes, you aren't worrying about "coloring in" your natural lashes so that they appear (the falsies are taking care of this for you), you're just putting on the mascara as an adherent - so that when you blink your eyes, your natural lashes & the falsies move as one.

If you're wearing lashes that are colored, mylar or otherwise would be ruined by using a black/brown mascara on them, use clear mascara -- Maybelline Great Lash makes one, should be pretty easy to find.

With me, it depends on the lashes.

For smaller ones, I put them on first and build my makeup around them. If they're rediculasly large, I put them on last to make it easier to apply my eyemake.

Do whatever's most comfortable for you...but most deffinatly wait to apply mascara till after the lashes are on, it'll help keep them in place.
