Red eyeshadow/liner

Who out there has experience using red eyeshadow or red eyeliner? Which do you prefer? What are the different brands that sell either? Which is the best for non-creasing?

I recently used Eye Kandy for the first time on my daughter for her cheer competition. Here is a photo: people.tribe.net/ddb419b8-...270bda92c2

Although I have some experience using glitter as an eyeshadow, some of the other moms helping out didn't. In fact, one mom who is a makeup artist by trade hated the stuff & couldn't figure out how to put it on even though I showed her step by step instructions. She ended up mixing the 2 colors so some of the girls' makeup was different than the rest.

Anyway, I thought maybe for next time a red eyeshadow or eyeliner would work better under the glitter. I really didn't like the liquid sugar much - it dries way too fast. And when you have 30 cheerleaders to do makeup on having to replenish your glue almost each time you do a brush stroke is time consuming. Our coach had some razzle Dazzle eye glitter & an adhesive called Stick-It Eye Glue. I think I liked this adhesive better. And the glitter seemed very comparable to Eye Kandy.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever you do...DO NOT use the red eyeshadow from hot topic. The red ends up showing pink. I tried everything to make it red and it was terrible. I think it's called Morbid (or something like that). I've had better luch with their other colors...but I definately wouldn't recomend their red. I've done red with just lip liner in the past and it turned out just fine. I wouldn't completely cover the lid, but smear some on the lid and then blend it around. Putting it on as thin as possible would probably cut down on the chances of it creasing and/or running. You could always run out and grab some "Wet n' Wild" lip liner and give it a trial run. If you find something that works well, I'd be interested.

We bought the Aqua Glitter by Ben Nye last year & it's not made for eyes & takes a long time to dry. I have not tried their eyeshadow.

Note to self: Do not get Morbid from Hot Topic.

Thanks to you both Treja & Mistie.

I use the silver aqua water on myeyes and have had no troubles with it .. i do use it in layers with a cool hairdryer til I am as glittery as i wanna be ... i have also used red and sometimes purple matte lipstick on my eyelids and then with my finger pressed in loose glitter( with my free hand I hold a sheet of TP under my eye for any jumpers ... once it is pressed in it doesn't move til I take it off ... it usually looks very impressive .. I also repeat this on my lips with those kiss proof lipsticks works great even with snacking

First, I cannot say enough what a potentially dangerous idea it is to use products designed (& tested) for your LIPS on your EYES. Just don't do it - the risk isn't worth it.

Second, do NOT use any old loose glitter on your eyes either. Use only glitters that are specifically made (& tested) for your eyes. Most loose glitters are made of tiny bits of METAL and if they should fall into your eye, they could very easily scratch the cornea (or worse) and cause some very irreverable, very permanent damage. Not worth it. An ounce of prevention goes a long way.

I second the Ben Nye....although I also like the Bloody Mary eyeshadows. Worked well for me. You know, Ariellah uses dark red lipliner as an eyeliner in a pinch ; )

First, in repsonse to your Eye Kandy issues...be sure that you wet your brush with water BEFORE dipping it in the Liquid Sugar. Having a damp brush helps the glue not get all overboard & helps in not clumping. But, if it does clump, just dip the brush back in the Liquid Sugar and then smooth over the clump -- should smooth it out just fine. Next, you need to be thinking of your Eye Kandy like eyeliner or eyeshadow, not glitter. And for me that means ditching the brush that comes in it. For an eyeliner application, I use an angled brush like I'd use with my gel eyeliners & I find that pulling on the outside of the lid to make it straight makes for a better line (a trick I usually do when applying liquid eyeliners). For an eyeshadow application, I use a larger, flatter eyeshadow brush and only get one side of the brush glittered up. Also, if you're doing the eyeshadow look, you can use other things besides the Liquid Sugar to put it on - anything from vaseline to cream eyeshadows to lip gloss to mixing it in with your powdered eyeshadows & using a wet-brush application.

Second, in response to the creasing issue -- this is a base issue, not a eyeshadow issue. Your eyeshadows will not work into the crease, rub off, or otherwise slide off your eyelids if you use an eyeshadow base -- anything creamy will do. I like Urban Decay's primer potion personally, because it's really light & translucent. Spending a bit of moo-lah on the base will enable you to be able to use even the cheapest eyeshadows & have them behave like the expensive ones.

Third, about the red eyeshawds....red is VERY difficult to find in an eyeshadow. You're rarely gonna find a true RED red -- it had to do with the fact that the dyes used to make RED reds are not safe for use around your eyes (keep that in mind before trying to use a lip liner or blush on your eyes). Instead, what you usually find tends to lean more towards a burgundy, a pink or an orange. My best advice is to use a "red" shadow (whether it be the orange, pink, or burgundy end of the spectrum), then put Eye Kandy or something similar over it. Also, make sure whatever glitter you're using on your eyes (if it's not Eye Kandy) is actually rated safe for eyes. A LOT of glitters are made up of tiny particles of metal and are NOT safe around your eyes, becuase if it gets in your eye it will scratch it & possibly permanently damage your eye. Eye Kandy is specifically non-metal and rated safe for wear on your eyes.

I actually did try vaseline the other night but did not leave it on long enough to see if it would make the Eye Kandy crease. I've did a Google search for red eyeshadow early today. I'll go back & post the links here to the ones I found for anyone's input.

      Thanks

I'm the Eye Kandy queen and adore it, obviously, BUT....

        1. I Touch Roses on Etsy has some kick BUTT red eye shadow.
        2. NEVER EVER EVER use the ones from Hot Topic...I know from full experience....dear Lord....never.

ditto ditto on the i touch roses colors. I love the brilliant variety. for mineral shadows the colors are fantastic. i love universal, and Best Friend is my most favorite color off her line.

I did a similar search awhile back. Some where on here is a neat site, IF I remember right, it's redhaze or something like that from the UK. I found a red I still haven't ordered because I'm waiting until my crayola purple lipstick runs out. LOL

I agree with the Urban Decay primer potion although I use it under my Mac eye paint for extra duty creasing protection. I have really oily eye lids and I have found I have to be extremely careful with cream shadows because they will crease on me.

Speaking of Urban Decay, they also have a nice red shadow, too. I can't remember the name of it off hand, but I bought some for my sister not too long ago.

The Primer Potion is the best thing to ever happen to make-up. I can't live without that stuff.

You never want to use lip items around your eyes. The ingredients used in lip items are NOT safe for around eyes period. Blushes are okay, but please never use lip items around your eyes.

      :)

I love my Ben Nye and Eye Kandy stuff...love lots but I don't use the liquid sugar I am using the Ben Nye adhesive, but be forewarned if you have sensitive skin it does have a burning sensation for some people. For me I am okay and I have sensitive skin LOL.

I love eye Kandy, but hate the sugar that comes with it as well. I end up using glitter cream and then dabbing the eye candy on top of the glitter cream and it stays REALLY well and is super easy to do.

Seconding (thirding? fourthing?) the recommendation for Urban Decay Primer Potion. And if you dab and blend a bit over TOP of your eyeshadow, you can apply glitter and have that hang onto it just as nicely.

MAC makes a pigment called Accent Red, which - as someone already pointed out - isn't a really RED red but is decent, and since it's pigment, you can mix it into anything else to turn it into an eyeliner, blush, lipstick, etc. They also have a duo called Mi'lady from last year's November collections which is a mineral purple/red eyeshadow duo. It's ridiculously popular and as a result you may never find it, but it's got a gorgeous red in it.

Urban Decay also has glitter eyeliners, as do other brands like NYX.

I really like UDPP, but if that is hard to get Too faced eyeshadow insurance is just as great, and on a more drugstore like L' Oreal HIP extended eyeshadow primer.

the only issue with UDPP is the packaging, its super cute, but so much gets wasted if you don't slice it open, alot of excess gets stuck in the "bulb". Too faced primer is a tube and easier to open up for the excess.

i actually use a red eyeshadow available at hot topic. its the only red colour ive found that i like.
i dont see it on the site, but its usually in the stores. Its a huge round pot of red.
Sometime mac will have a reddish colour, but it tends to be either a bit too pink or a bit too orange.

I use a red from Kryolan. It is a true bright fire engine red. It stays longer on my oily lids than any other eyeshadow. If you aren't in San Francisco oro near a theatrical shop that sells Kryolan you can buy it from ebay.

Here's one person's tutorial on how to get a really deep red:

    blog.specktra.net/2008/06/0...glam-soup/

I would not recommend using lipstick as one person above stated; lipsticks are only approved for the lips, and as people have already said, the reason there's such a lack of true red eyeshadow is because most of the chemicals used to make the color red are harmful to the eye. Some people can (or can't but do anyway) put just about anything on their eyes and be fine, but that's their prerogative as adults - I wouldn't gamble with peoples' kids, especially in this lawsuit-happy day and age.

Thanks. That's pretty wild. And I agree with you about what & what not to use. We will not be using anything red that does not state it is safe for eyes. I certainly don't want to take any chances of anyone having some sort of reaction.

I posed the problem of red eyeshadow to a friend of mine a few years back and she bought me some MAC blush. It's intensely red and does not come off. I wore it to many shows, sweated my ass off but my eyeshadow remained flawless. I definitely recommend it.
