Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows of a makeup class or workshop they could recommend...I want to focus particularly on eyes, especially for theater/diva/exotic/cirque du soleil looks...
Also--any recommendations on theater or circus makeup brands I could order on-line or buy in the Bay Area?
Thank you!

Re: Looking for makeup class or workshop in Bay Area...
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 9:10 PMBen Nye makes awesome professional theater make up, clear strong color, no perfumes, wet or dry application. All colors can be used on lips, cheeks and eyes so you get a lot of versatility. Google " Ben Nye" and you'll hit some sites that carry it.

Wed, August 8, 2007 - 9:20 PMI bought mine from
www.stagetechnology.com/catalo...ies.cfm
As far as classes go, I don't know but I think a willingness to experiment goes a long way.
Get your ladies together and just play. Look at photos of other dancers, collect a "Book o Looks" and keep records of looks you like, how you did them, what colors, brands etc. Soon you can teach your own class. Good Fortune and have fun. Don't forget to take lots of pictuers and post em so we can see!

Re: Looking for makeup class or workshop in Bay Area...
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 5:10 PMHi Fir,
Kryolan (theatrical make-up supplier) has a San Francisco location on 9th Street in SF (south of Market). Great stuff.
www.kryolan.com/en/NEW/index.htm
Locally Nordstrom on Market and 5th (SF) carried a small supply of Ben Nye. Lots of folks like MAC, and they have some theater quality stuff as well, which can be found at Nordstrom or at the Macy's on Union Square. I like MAC, but my budget prefers Nyx, which I think is pretty comparable quality (especially for shadows). But the only place I have found there stuff in the Bay Area is at Ulta in the Tanforan Mall in San Mateo. They have Rimmell there, too, which some of my theatrical make-up friends swear by.
Not sure of any make-up classes locally, though I have no doubt they exist (I know some belly dance teachers do make-up demos in their classes before student recitals, though...maybe ask your instructor?).
I agree with the above poster about keeping pics of looks you like and experimenting on yourself. I have learned to take a picture of my eyes when I like how they came out so I can try to recreate it for the next show. :) Also, with the right brushes, patience, and skills you can get killer looks from even Walgreen's Wet & Wild make-up!
Have fun!

Fri, August 10, 2007 - 11:19 PMthere is a MAC pro shop in SF. You do not have to be a member to shop there, and the people are very good. They do a lot of work in the theater and dance world. -

Re: Looking for makeup class or workshop in Bay Area...
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 11:25 AMThe best thing to do is make an appt with a MAC consultant (there's 4-5 of them in the stores at any given time). Just call your nearest MAC counter (even if it's in a dept store) and tell them you want to make an appt for a makeover. when you get to the appt, tell your makeup consultant what kind of look you had in mind (dramatic? Stage? Natural? Crazy colors? Natural colors?), and she'll teach you how to apply it and show you rad colors to work with. INSIST you are there to learn if she gives you some crap about "it will spoil the end surprise if you watch what I'm doing." No way, sister. That's why you're there: to learn! Maybe state that when you initially make the appt over the phone.
The catch is with this type of makeover, you have to buy at least $40 of makeup, but let's face it, that's not hard at MAC!!! Plus, it sounds like you're there to buy anyway. So make that appt!! It takes an hour, and it's SO much fun. You only get one look, but you can always make another appt for another look! I love doing this. I've done it a few times and always walked out with amazing colors.
