I hope I can post this question here with make up and such!
I'm a newbie to fingernails because I have chewed them since I was a wee one. Now at 44 (today is my B-day!) I decided I am tired of having jacked up paws and want the elegant nails I see so many women wearing. I prefer them short-short as I don't want to lose an eye.
;-P
I have been wearing a set off and on these past two weeks that I like. They are very short and flexable from KISS. I do worry about fungus, so I clean very well with anti-kootie stuff. The nails are growing nicely underneath and I want to get so I have only my own nails. But these are so thin and weak I fear I will snag and rip or peel (instead of bite) them. What can I use to make them strong and hard? My mother many years ago had something UNDER the tips of her nails that looked almost wedge-like supporting her nail. Ideas on what the heck that was? Thanks ladies!

Re: Do fingernails count?
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 9:39 PMI don't know any thing about a wedge thing, but horse hoof hardener does wonders for strengthening your nails. -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Sat, October 18, 2008 - 11:43 PMWould I get that at a Big R or Fleet Supply place? They sell tack, feed and meds for horses. Do you know a brand name? Thanks! -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 1:08 AMThere's some good info here: www.associatedcontent.com/artic...s.html
And as with everything else..good nutrition!
I knew a harpist who rubbed myrrh oil into her nails to harden them.. I think she also soaked her nails in lemon juice once a month... I'm guessing rubbing any oil into your cuticles & nails would be nice... -
-
Re: Do fingernails count?
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 9:31 AMrubbing almond oil is also good for your nails for growth etc.
The worst thing you can use is nail hardner in a bottle as it makes your nails brittle and prone to snapping. -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 10:41 AMYeah, I wondered about that. If it's hard that's one thing, but I would prefer strong and with some give.

Re: Do fingernails count?
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 10:38 AMMyrrh oil? Wow! I wonder where to get that. Checking on the ol' inernet for that one. I hear ya on good nutrition, I do try to balance and cut out junk food all together. Too bad the folks who make food don't think the same way, there is so much crap in most anything we buy nowadays! -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Sun, October 19, 2008 - 8:41 PMI am so sorry to say that there isnt a magic pill for perfect nails and pretty hair. If there was, wouldnt we all be cover girls? A good balanced diet, lots of healthy stuff, vitamins, and the like will be your best bet. Your nails and hair are as they are unfortunatly. You dont want nails that are too strong. They need flexability- I have uber strong nails and I cant tell you how many times Ive been to the hospital having the torn off stumps surgicaly removed. I rolled down the car window once and caught the tip of my left thumb nail on something on the dash, and ripped the sucker right the F*** off. Completely. Everything. Bloody bare nail bed. With another 50 miles to drive and two dogs to show, then driving home again. I havent kept them long since then.
Dont soak them in water for a long time. Keep them filed properly so they wont catch, peel, or rip. Use a nice vegatable type oil every now and then.Just a small drop will cover several nails.and massage in well. I like Vit E oil, but its really whatever you like. Keep them short untill you are used to them. Fake nails are OK as long as you keep up with the maintanence. Get a real manicure. I did 30 years ago and I never bit my nails again.
Good luck! -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Mon, October 20, 2008 - 1:37 AMYes, like she said!
One of the most simple things and very effective is just use handcream take care of your hands and eat a good diet. Use rubber gloves for washing up. Use a nail brush to clean under your nails when you wash your hands, and put on hand cream every time you wash your hands or use nail polish remover, It'll stop you getting hang nails. File your nails smooth every time you get a snag so it doesn't catch and tear etc etc. I use handcream which is supposed to be good for my nails also, but it seems they are considerably better even when I use cheap handcream (mine tend to flake). Also, like any part of your body ,skin or whatever, good diet equals better body, but with nails it nourishes the nail bed and bits that aren't "dead" so it won't necessarily be a quick fix.

Re: Do fingernails count?
Mon, October 20, 2008 - 12:50 PMYou should be able to find myrhh oil at an herbal shop or any metaphysical shop...they are very big on essential oils...and the best vitamin for hair, nails and skin is Vitamin A...Nexxus used to have one especially formulated for such. But a good multi-vitamin would do just as well...and a good diet of fresh fruits and veges and lean meats, if you're not a vegetarian, will make not only your nails healthier, but your whole body.
And btw...any artificial nails are gonna make your own nails weak, underneath...wear them for short periods, then let your own nails breathe for a while...or you'll end up with paper thin nails that will tear at nothing! -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 6:55 AMI'm sorry, but i beg to differ on the false nail point. I used to bite my nails whne I was little which meant that when i stopped my nails were super bendy and thin. I tried false nails for about a year, non-stop and now my nails are really strong!
Also, nails don't breathe. They are a layer of keratin which are there to prptect the soft squishy stuff underneath. If they did breathe, millions of people would have dead fingertips from wearing nail-varnish on a continuous basis. -
-
Re: Do fingernails count?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 9:40 AMnails are there to protect your fingertips (of course you already know that, but it leads to the following). If you will start tapping and pressing your nails, they will strengthen. Don't do it TOO hard or you will cause lateral ridges. The natural essential oils are a good idea as well as any oil high in vit. e.
On the prenatal vitamin issue: this can be VERY dangerous as they are very high in iron. should your body accumulate too much iron, it could stop your heart. Do not take prenatal vitamins without talking to your doctor first.

Re: Do fingernails count?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 4:05 PMThe thing of nails 'breathing' is meant to be figurative. I know nails don't really breathe. But, having been trained in cosmetology and having experience with artificial nails, I know that it's best to take a break, occasionally...cuz they will keep your own nails from being able to be strong and healthy.

Re: Do fingernails count?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 5:46 AMPre-natal vitamins. They are great for your hair and nails. -
-
Re: Do fingernails count?
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 10:11 PMFor sure!
Most prenatals that I have seen do not have excessive amounts of iron. In fact, having managed a vitamin store for over 15 years, I haven't seen any prenatal with stonger than 18mg. of iron. I often recommened a good multi vitamin, in general, to everyone who doesn't eat a perfectly balanced diet (which is most every person with whom I come in contact with).
In fact, "spoon" nails and vertical ridges in the nails can be a sign of iron deficiency. Other signs of deficiency can also include brittle hair, hair loss, fatigue, dizziness, and anemia. A doctor should investigate symptoms. Deficiency may result from internal bleeding, excessive menstrual bleeding, poor digestion, ulcers, as well as long-term illness. In some cases, vitamin B6 or B12 deficiency is the underlying cause of anemia.
Really though, iron is way besides the point, in this case.
Nutrients which are very important for your nails include...
Vitamin A, Calcium, B-complex, Biotin, Protein, Gelatin, and Silica.
Also, a great multi-vitamin and mineral complex.
Try your local vitamin or health foods store. If your not eating a complete and balanced diet, to help with your body's nutritional needs, I'd say atleast get a multi-vit (one better than Centrum). Ask the shop-keeper for a good hair, skin, and nail formula. It won't contain all the essential vitamins and minerals, but it will contain a combination of nutrients beneficial for hair, skin, and nail health.
Good Luck - growing your nails!

Re: Do fingernails count?
Wed, October 22, 2008 - 2:41 PMKathy:
I give myself a manicure once a week and I keep polish on my nails all the time. When I don't I notice that they tend to get scratches on the surface of the nail and catch on things which causes ripping, snapping and losing layers from the nail.
When you give yourself a weekly manicure make sure you file your nails so you don't have any snags or corners and when you polish, you can bring the polish over the free edge of the nail. That gives you a little more protection when you bang your nails on anything.
I also tend to keep my nails short, but I have long nail beds so they look longer than they are on the free edge. I also have super thick nails and they look like artificial nails.
When the nails are short there is less of a tendency to break further down the nail bed too. The longer the nail the more potential for breaking closer to the cuticle. It all depends on how careful you are with your hands and how you take care of your nails to keep them long and nice looking at the same time. I'm a nail Nazi.

PS I love the fast drying top coats from the beauty supply store. They go on thick, which protects my nails and they dry fast. My faves are Seche' Vite (my number one choice) and Poshe'. -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Thu, October 23, 2008 - 7:31 AMMy nails just seem to "magically" get better, stronger, longer when my diet is really good and healthy, with lots of fruits and veggies. And I seem to see a connection between my nails and my hair. When my hair is happy with my shampoo and conditioner combo, my nails seem to thrive.
Of course, hair and shampoo and conditioner is different for everyone…

Re: Do fingernails count?
Thu, October 23, 2008 - 8:32 AMI may be way late on this but I had a similar problem. My nails would grow for a while and then they would get weak and start to break off and split. I started taking a daily multivitamin on a daily basis and my nails are actually growing and they are noticably stronger. Hope that helps. :)
And happy belated Birthday!! -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Fri, October 24, 2008 - 7:09 PMThis is all pretty good information! I am a nail professional and also an Education Ambassador for a nail product company, Creative Nail Design. It is true that diet, exercise, and good health will reflect in your nail condition. However, some people are born with better nails than others. (Thats genetics for ya!) Nail hardeners will only work if you have weak, paper thin nails. And watch out for nail hardeners that contain formaldehyde as their main ingredient for hardening nails. It works, but it will cause your nails to become overly hard and brittle. If your nails are dry, peeling or snapping, a nail hardener will only make them worse. If your nails are brittle you do need a cuticle oil to help keep them flexible. I like SolarOil, not only because my company makes it, but because it is a blend of Jojoba, Rice Bran and Almond Oils with Vitamin E. It penetrates deeply giving your nails flexibility and toughness.
As far as supplements go, there is nothing that will make your nails grow faster or harder. And the products that are used for artificial nails, do not damage your nails. Your nails can become damaged from improper maintenance or removal of enhancements but not from the products themselves.
At CND, we have a philosophy called the three C's when it comes to natural nail care. Care, Coat, Condition. Care - manicure your nails on a regular basis or get a manicure from a professional. Coat - wear a protective coating on your nail, such as nail enamel. Condition - make sure to use a moisturizing, penetrating oil or lotion to keep your nails flexible.
If you would like more information, visit our website at www.cnd.com
Hope that helps! -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Fri, October 24, 2008 - 8:21 PMPhaedra... my nail tech gives all of her clients a small bottle of solar oils to keep with them to message in-between fills or manicures... so i believe in it too.
I have my nails done. She uses colored acrylic and does the tips only. I change the color every other month or so. I like it because i don't have to polish them. no chipping or peeling and if by chance one breaks and i can't get right in for a repair.. i can glue it back together until she fixes it so my hands always look dance ready

Re: Do fingernails count?
Mon, October 27, 2008 - 8:34 PMif you can stand another story: I also chew and I pick. And if I can actually see the free edge emerging, I gotta chew that off too. I've tried esthetician applied acrylic nails and they look and feel great. only thing is, after a while, you are more and more limited in what you can do with your hands and your fingertips particularly will be almost tender. Good news, tho, just today at London Drugs I saw a press-on type of nail made of nail polish only. It's very very thin. I dunno how it works, but after your careful mani, you grab the tip of one and line it up to your cuticle. You can even reset it if it's crooked. then you squish it on and carefully file off the excess by filing from the nail top to the lower edge. just the edge. it's in a tall black or dark blue package showing you the colour of the nails. i couldn't see a price or obvious brand name so my aadd kicked in and went looking at the cool new paintable eye-liner Revlon Eye Fantasy. AND lise watier has an ***Awesome*** sparkle product like gel with billions of gold, irridecent or silver bits of glitter in it. about $14. Goes on smooth and in the spot you want! Whoo Hoo! -

Mon, October 27, 2008 - 8:52 PMBlackie..
<<after a while, you are more and more limited in what you can do with your hands and your fingertips particularly >>
not true. I have decent length nails and I do everything.. infact I am one step betther because I always have some built in tools. I have played city league co-ed softball..fast pitch even. I have horses, dogs and now goats..I built a house from foundaition to roof [during that time was the only time I took off my nails - when we were pulling wire.. a lot of abuse to hands,, not just nails] but after that - back on they are. When I did take them off.. I just kept them short and they were no differnt then I remember they were when I put them on some 15 + years before. The trick is to have a good nail person.. and NO primer acid stuff ! Try Creative "dip" style.. works like charm - no 'lifting' -
-
Re: Do fingernails count?
Mon, October 27, 2008 - 8:52 PMcorrection.. not Creative for dip it is "Back Scratchers" -

Re: Do fingernails count?
Mon, October 27, 2008 - 9:10 PMYe, I think the old chemicals they used to use for nails is part of what was the problem...it's been...*thinks*...damn...almost 20 years since I had my nails...they've come a looooong way since then...
If I wear nails now, I use the ones that are already decorated and only wear them for a few days at a time...the glue just does not seem to agree with my nails...and my fingers just can't deal with the acetone to remove it...very sensitive skin!!!
