Hi all..
I know this has been covered before, but what is the best way to keep those
artificial flowers in your hair for a performance, wrap the wire stems around a
small clip and clip them in or just stick the stems through your bun? Next weekend
I have a performance and would love to get the hair garden look just right...
Thank you,
Maria

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 12:41 AMHi Henna,
I battled a lot at first to get my roses to stay in my hair but I finally managed it and here's how:-
I took the stem off completely so that I just had a bloom. I then turned them upside down and made sure they were sitting so the bottom of the bloom was level. I then taped a hair pin (the long slide kind, not a bobby pin) to the bottom so that it stood up straight in the air at 90 degrees to the bottom of the bloom. Now you glue gun the crap out of where the pin and flower meet, holding the pin so that it stays up straight until the glue is dry enough to hold the pin on its own.
Voila!!!! Instant flower hair pin. These are also awesome for getting hair pieces and intricate, elaborate 'dos to stay in through even the most hardcore performance.
I hope I've helped! -

Tue, August 4, 2009 - 1:58 AMI did something similar to this, but i used hair combs instead of pins. I tried the pins, and had the misfortune of losing some magnolias during a spin. I had the same process of removing the stem and then glue gunning it. I don't know if this will help at all but it's worth a shot :D

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 5:07 AMI take the middle part out of the flower, and shove a chopstick though it one piece at a time. I use sticks that gradually get wider so the flowers don't slip off. I get them from the Asian $ stores or 99 cent stores by the box. They are too long so I saw off a few inches using a kitchen knife and paint the raw end with nail polish. -

Thu, July 16, 2009 - 10:24 AM----> ah, your poor kitchen knives, lol.
I have a set of really nice knives that I got for Christmas and then a few cheap ones that came with a 'kitchen caddy' type dealie with slotted spoons and a ladle and all sorts of shenanigans. I use those to murder chop sticks :-) -

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 10:29 AMHere is a video of how to make feather hair pins. I was thinking of using it for f lowers also.
www.youtube.com/watch
What I have been doing, is I take these little tiny rubber bands and wrap it through the middle portion of the flower, twist then wrap the other side through. So, you have a sort of 'V' pattern. I then take a second little rubber band and pull it halfway through the bottom of the other rubber band, which is near the base of the flower; Fold this new one through itself so it hooks the old one and. I then use the loose band to wrap in my hair. Be aware, that rubber bands, no matter how much they say that they will not pull hair, always run the risk of pulling hair.
Good luck.

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 6:52 AMI just made some flower hair clips, so I can help! I bought some double prong hair clips (the kind used in beauty salons for pin curls or curlers). You can get these at a beauty supply store like Sally Beauty Supply. Then I bought a square of felt the color of my flowers (found at any craft store or Wal-Mart). I cut the stems off, put hot glue on the underside of the flower, and sandwiched the top portion of the hair clip between the flower and a little square of felt I had cut from the larger piece. Ta Da! -

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 1:34 PMI used to do jewelry and crafts once upon a time, and found that the best stay-forever glue is either GOOP or E6000. Ask around at your craft supply or Home Depot, for something similar. The advantage over hot glue is that you use it at room temp (no more burns!) and it dries clear, and is much less likely to peel off when subjected to heat or movement. Don't use a super glue that dries brittle, it may snap off. You want something that has a secure hold but some flex, and dries clear.

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 4:34 PMWith the amount of silk flowers left on the ground with stems still attached, I'd say proves that method is not so great.
Clips are the go.
Instead of felt or ribbon I like to use a silk leaf that usually comes with the flower. I cut the stem pretty close then hot glue the flower, clip and leaf in that order.
As for clips I love it when I find smooth ones (no teeth) with a firm hold, I rarely get my flowers in the right spot first go, The ones with teeth certainly stay in but pull out your do if you need to reposition the flower.
So yeh I'm interested in how well the hair dresser clips stay in too.

I do this too. although i take the whole flower apart and glue each section back to the center. i have had more than a few come apart in the middle.

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 7:19 PMI just danced with them in this weekend and they worked really well. I don't know if I made myself too clear before, but these are the clips that have a spring in them so you can squeeze them open and closed. So anyway, I just slide them in pointing the open end downward. (So I don't even tempt gravity, he he.) I put them in around my pony tail to dress it up a bit.

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 4:24 PMWhat about gluing it directly to a porcupine quill or chopstick? I've seen people (and someone here mentioned) pull out the center of the flower and stick it through. Would it work to just glue it to the end of the stick/quill? -

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Thu, July 16, 2009 - 7:38 PMI haven't had good luck with just glueing a flower onto a stick or quill, but after you pull the flower off of the plastic stem, you can drill into the chop stick and then stick the metal wire from the center of hte flower into the chopstick (or just stick the flower into the quill because quills are soft). The glue the heck out of that joint (where the flower inserts into the chop stick or quill).
HOWEVER - this only works with some flowers... because some silk flowers are constructed with the plastic stem as a center (so after you pull them off the them, there is a hole in the flower, where you could stick a bobby pin in). To do it this way, you need a flower that when you tear it apart has a wire coming out of the bottom of the flower.
You know how in some mechanics, they'll call parts "male" and "female" --- well you can make the chop stick "female" if the flower is "male"---if that makes sense.

I made some of these a few weekends ago and so far so good :) I even added some ribbon and made a flower fairy wand for my little girl ;)

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 7:18 PMI have glued a clip to the flower before but the flower was floppy, think bobble flower. So, I just use 2 or 3 bobby pins to the leaves or the bottom petals and they stay nice & tight. Of course, that only works for flowers with a fairly flat bottom. For lilies, I run a piece of wire thru the middle and wind it around my bun. -

Re: best way to attach flowers??
Fri, July 17, 2009 - 9:16 AMVery nice posts! : )
I create my floral hair pieces by hand as well. I was on a large red rose kick for awhile, but I've moved on to Orchids, they really *pop* with color when doing outdoor or summer performances!
