Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 7:34 AMi make my own - go to your local WalMart or craft/sewing store (like Michaels or JoAnn's) and look at the fake flowers - they come in a bunch on stems. pick out what you like, then choose the type of hair clip you want to use, and take apart the stems and flowers - hot glue away!
you can make unique, one-of-a-kind stuff this way. -

Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 7:48 AMi suppose thats also cheaper.
i still have money left on a jo ann fabrics gift card, ill use it for that :-P thanks

Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 8:02 AMI usually wire wrap mine, I cant ever get the stupid hot glue to stay on metal clips! Things tend not to work right for me though -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Mon, September 7, 2009 - 3:28 PMThat's why I use either felt or craft foam. I basically wedge and glue the clip between two pieces and it keeps my hair a little more safe.

Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 7:56 AMCheck Etsy too, if you feel like buying ready-made. There are always people making amazing things for your hair. (There is one seller I found this morning making flower hair clips out of turn of the century book jackets. Pretty cool and beautiful stuff!) -

Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 8:04 AMMost of the flowers you see are fake - just easier to deal with. As for the back, I either put a hair pin on the back like this: www.etsy.com/view_listing.php (I prefer this, as it's easier to manipulate -- stick in a bun, shove under a headdress, secure behind the ear with a bobby pin across it, etc). Or, sometimes you can find flowers at craft stores with these alligator slips already attached to the back of them, like this: www.etsy.com/view_listing.php Some people like that becuase it's really secure - some don't, as it can pull on the hair if it's a really tight clip. -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 9:23 AMDefinitely fake. I tried some real flowers once, my mom is an amazing gardener, it was such a hot day that they just wilted. If you're going to do real flowers, you probably need something to keep the stems moist so they don't wilt.
You can also go to Claire's Boutique and the like and find some really great hair clips as well, for very cheap. -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 9:29 AMOooh...that reminds me...I saw a story the other day that listed Claire's as being in danger of going under...it was a list of small places like it that are at risk of going out of business cuz of the economy...so, if you like Claire's, you'd might better go stock up! -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 10:16 AMOh no, really? I love that place... :(
-
Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 10:18 AMYup....our Claire's in the mall just shut it's doors the other day :( -

Re: flower question for hair
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 10:26 AMThat's devastating. What will I do without Claire's?!

Re: flower question for hair
Sun, February 22, 2009 - 5:36 PMThe ones in my AV are real and they held up all day and night. Camellias are great for that. Daisies are OK but the petals get a little bruised. The Camellias are heavy though, so I had to use bobby pins to place and then small claw cilps to keep them in.
:-)

Re: flower question for hair
Sun, February 22, 2009 - 9:47 PMi wear a flower in my hair all the time. I go to the different dollar stores around here and stock up. Since I just wear them on the side of my head, I just bobby pin them in, in a few places. I havent really danced with flowers in my hair, only once and I hot glued two clips to a gigantic blue rose. worked great! -

Re: flower question for hair
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 4:48 AMi seen some really pretty ones at tribalcon buti was like ok...i am not paying 8 dollars for something i can make for half that lol. -

Re: flower question for hair
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 9:22 PMI havent tried this yet, but you know those test tube things with the rubber stopper that they put on the end of a single flower bloom at the florists' to keep the flower in water? With the right hairstyle you might find a way to work blooms like a heavy rose or flashy bird of paradise flower into your do. Does anyone know if they have mini test-tube flower thingys? -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 11:28 AMYes, they do, and they sell them in a lot of liquor stores in iffy neighborhoods- they come with a tiny fake (glass?) rose in them, and are used mostly as crack pipes. I learned this from Celebrity Rehab. You never know what useful information you'll glean from reality shows. -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 11:48 AMYou can also usually pick those up at your local florist, too. They're just plastic tubes with rubber caps. Most of the smaller shops probably won't mind giving you one or two for free. -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 4:48 PMThat just sounds really cool. Maybe I'll have to try it sometime. -

Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 5:43 PMYou can make some yarn ones using a 12 peg round loom (I have Knifty Knitter). They can be used for baby sock/booties, but I also use them for flowers.
www.knitting-and.com/small-l...dex.html
This site has a couple of instructions on how to make yarn flowers. I didn't find any basic instructions, but it's really simple.
I posted instructions in my blogs.

Re: flower question for hair
Mon, February 23, 2009 - 11:32 PMHair ornaments are my specialty - it's what The Gypsy Kiss is known for.
www.thegypsykiss.com/hair_ornaments.html
Check it out! I love hairflowers. But I use a lot of peacock feathers, and pheasant and emu as well. To make the clips stay in while you dance, just decide where you want it. Lift up a section of your hair , right where you want the flower to be. Just underneath, make a little tiny ponytail. Then let the hair you were holding up fall over the ponytail (to hide it). Take your flower clip and push the clip part through the ponytail holder. It won't fall out, even during backbends! I wouldn't recommend zars while you're wearing hair ornaments, though.
Warm Wishes,
Amy Danielson -

Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 7:54 AMi have t osay.....
when i was at tribalcon i seen som enice hair flowers then i went wait..these are like 8 dollars minimum and they go up..but i know damn well for 8 dollars i can probably make 2-3 of these...especially from all the posts on the diy tribe....
so i resisted the urge to splurge on flowers and just keep making my own..
that and i already threw down A LOT of money on other stuff lol -

Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 7:59 AM>> but i know damn well for 8 dollars i can probably make 2-3 of these
Not necessarily. Sometimes the flowers *alone* cost $8/piece (before you add anything to them), if you're using really good quality fake/silk flowers & not some dollar store find. Something to consider before you dismiss what someone else is selling. -
-
Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 1:44 PMwell..for me..the cost of the flowers is nothing...i still have 16 dollars left on a jo ann fabrics gift card hehe. -

Re: flower question for hair
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 2:02 PMbtw, if you have them in your area, I would recommend Hobby Lobby over Joann's for flowers. Theirs are a lot more realistic-looking & they last longer/wear better. -

Re: flower question for hair
Mon, September 7, 2009 - 3:30 PMI have sold mine in the past, and I try to price them for how large they are ($12 for flowers as big as my head...no seriously, i have a picture somewhere, and the flower completely blocks my face...) and how much material/effort went into it. Sometimes I'll add glitter glue stuff on them, and those cost just a little over the plain

Re: flower question for hair
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 8:43 PMYou absolutely can make your own - it's fun. Each artist has their own style. But it's true that many flowers themselves, straight out of the store, are expensive - as well as stones, pearls, specialty feathers and the many, many, many of them it takes to learn all the tricks of the trade to make your hairflower 'work' can be expensive. However, if you love crafting and art - I would say do make them for yourself. You will love the results, and the knowledge that like the ones I make for my customers, your piece is one of a kind.

Re: flower question for hair
Wed, February 25, 2009 - 2:28 PMI just use mine as hair sticks under a suck bun.
I find fake flowers with a long stem, and just stick it in, stem and all, I dont bother with any clips.
They stay in just fine, and I havent lost one yet! -

Re: flower question for hair
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 1:25 AMI have a couple of Gypsy Kiss flowers, and I really like them. I have very fine hair and most things slide right out of my hair- these stay in. I wore one of mine for a 50 minute gig tonight (no air conditioning and sweat was literally running down my face) but my flower didn't budge. And my son told me I was pretty. :-)

Re: flower question for hair
Mon, September 7, 2009 - 3:26 PMHey Monique! We miss you! I saw this message and didn't know it was you until I went to answer it! :)
Ok, anyway
I've always made my own hair flowers. I bought one from BabyGirlBoutique.com and figured that I could make them alot easier. I go to any craft stores and look for flowers that I like. I tend to stick to the more expensive realistic looking flowers. I know that you can often find them on sale. Anyway, I just clip them off (just make sure that you leave enough for the flower to remain held together, once a peony unravels, it's over!) and I hot glue a piece of felt of craft foam to the back. Then I usually secure a clip with another piece of foam/felt under the top part of the clip. Just to keep something between my hair and the barrette.
Hope this helps!
