Or does it always?
I've been attempting the no poo baking soda rinse and vinegar rinse due to a recently developed allergy to conditioner. It seems like I get a couple of weeks, and then something ends up in my hair that I feel like it needs a good wash to get rid of. For example, I was in a wedding two weeks ago, and the girl doing our hair put an insane amount of hair spray in my hair (after I asked her to use as little as possible), and I just felt like it needed the shampoo to get all the gunk out. Last night, I had a "Squirt" soda bomb go off in my kitchen (fell off the counter, exploded, shooting Squirt all over everything, including me), my hair was soaked and sticky, so I washed it to get everything out. I've also wondered about chorine from pools and salt water at the beach...will baking soda/vinegar clean all the stuff out of my hair?

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 11:06 AMSo, have you just assumed that it wouldn't work & shampoo'd anyway? Or have you tried & it didn't work/help?

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 2:12 PMActually, the baking soda would have been the best thing in the world to get the hair spray and the soda out...we used to use it in the salon for people who had majour product build-up...
The detox process does take a while...I had to stop because it was stripping the colour out of my hair, but I do use a natural shampoo bar that contains no SLS...

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 6:20 AMThanks Rebekah - good to know for next time!
Bellatrix - I assumed that it wouldn't work. I had done a lot of research on curly girl, co-washes, and no poo before I started, and I had remembered reading that some of them would not remove certain chemicals (silicone sticks out in my mind), so based on that, I assumed that the baking soda/vinegar would't remove the hair spray or the soda. -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:05 AMHi! Actually baking soda is just the thing to remove silicone from the hair. Vinegar doesn't seem to remove anything per se, just acts as a conditioner, in my experience... and quite a heavy one at that. Baking soda however will strip anything out of your hair! I had to stop using it because I felt it was working a little too well. -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 8:49 AMYeah, if anyone wants really kind poo for hair try lush www.lush.com - they do solid shampoo bars and they are ACE. especially the 'new' one (it apparnetly helps to stop fallout too and does not put residue in the hair and has cinnammon in it!). They also have some condition bars too! -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 7:22 AMAnyone find that those shampoo bars take some adjustment time? I used a friend's once & my hair felt like I hadn't been rinsed it at all, despite a long rinse. It seemed to leave a sticky residue. It was one of the Lush ones. That was the only time I've used one so I'm not sure what went wrong. -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 9:11 AMYe, they do take some adjustment...I think it's probably all the essential oils...I still use a light conditioner cuz it seems to kind of counteract the feeling...plus, a conditioner is used to close the cuticle on the hair, making it smoother and the essential oils won't do that...that's the same thing that the vinegar is for in the 'no poo'...

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 8:32 PMThe title "no poo" still makes me giggle too! ;o)
Baking soda is alkaline. The vinegar rinse is acid. The baking soda causes the cuticle of the hair shaft to lift up a little. The acid helps to make the cuticle lay flat and smooth again. That's why perms work the way they do... the perm solution is alkaline, followed by an acid neutralizer. One counteracts the other.
Has anyone with chemically colored hair done the no poo thing? Any effect on your color? -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 7:26 AMhaha...(see above)...of course, I only use a semi and use henna in between colourings for the healthy benefits...don't know about a permanent colour...

Depends on what you're using. If you're doing the BS/ACV thing, I haven't heard anyone say that there's been an effect on their color. However, if you're using a glycerin bar soap (instead of an SLS-shampoo), it will strip the color out of your hair. -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 7:05 AMThanks for the reminder, Bellatrix ,about no glycerin and also nix to mineral oil on color treated hair; especially reds. I'd be afraid the vinegar would remove my red though.
Any redheads out there who do permanent color and no poo? -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 12:32 PMI'm a color treated naturally curly red head who only uses a non sls shampoo about once a month... I use a baking soda rinse about once a week and I condition from my ears down (long hair) every day.....been doing that for about 3 years now. I haven't had any problem with color lifting, in fact I'd say the color stays rich longer than it did when I shampooed every day. -
-
Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 7:18 AMThanks M. Do you use product like sprays or other fixatives on your hair? Do you shampoo more than once a month or is your regimen to wash once a month combined with the weekly baking soda rinses and that's all you need to do for cleansing?

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 6:34 PMI think the no poo works all the time.... I've been on it since April, and I feel like my hair is better than ever. I used to color my hair but haven't for over a year and a half, and the color still in my hair seems to be more vibrant since starting no poo. The baking soda takes and gunk out of the hair, so I'm assuming it will work with hair spray. For those of you still using chemical hair color- isn't the point of no poo to get that crap detoxed out of the hair? -

Re: When does "no poo" not work?
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 9:30 PMYes, baking soda WILL remove hair spray from your hair...you can see it roll off in beads!!!
That's part of the reason why I gave up the 'no poo'...it was stripping the colour out of my hair...but while it will remove tone from the hair, it will not remove a permanent colour...permanent colours actually lift colour out of the hair, causing a structural change and nothing will undo that...it has to grow out...
