You could try a less-permanent drawing method (eye liner pencils, for example) and then seal them on the skin. I really like Kryolan's Fixing Spray... sets quite well but washes off with soap and water when you're done, and it even has SPF 15 protection.

Sounds like a great project, Gidget! Good luck!

Latex body/face paint..... not cheap though. I'm afraid in this department, you get what you pay for..... if you want it to be durable, you have to pay for it. There is also indelible lipstick (also not cheap).

Unfortunately most paints will rub off on clothing after awhile (i.e. if the clothing is rubbing directly against the paint) no matter what, and sunscreens are often oily which serves to break down the makeup. The only thing I can think of as working somewhat would be Alcohol Activated makeup, which goes on and must be removed with alcohol. It's not super cheap though.

My group wishes to draw on naked backs at burning man. The drawing materials will be left out for all to pick up and use so we prefer something not terribly expensive. And we'd like it not to rub off on clothing. We prefer no brushes. We tried Sharpies but found they rubbed off on clothing after sunscreen was applied. Any advice?

FYI, the project is the Dream Quilt and we're using shadows cast by plasma-cut steel patches as templates to draw the patch designs on bodies. See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dreamquilt/
