A Headbanger's Hair

topic posted Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:14 AM by  Khymera
I love the 'tribal' hair with all the ornaments and cowrie falls. I wish I could dress my head up like that, but I dance to heavy metal, and I do bang my head around a bit so I usually just let it stand alone without any ornaments. I've tried adding a Fall here and there, but I just end up flinging it across the room. hehehe
Is there something lite weight that I can add to my hair, that's easy to keep in?

And I'd like to give major kudos to the creator of this tribe! It's great!

You know, a lot of people don't use tassels and fringes in their hair but... I think it would be a neato thing to see the fringe fly around when you bang your head :D

There are also yarn falls that are fairly light weight that attach with those elastic loops, which stay in place rather well.

Oh also, a lot of yarn falls have little shells and tinklets sewn on there occasionally, so you'd get those, but it wouldn't be as heavy as full cowrie falls or coin ornaments.

Thanx. I was worried about the yarn getting tangled, but I think I'll try it out. I made some dreads, but they were too heavy for my flings and flew right off. lmao Maybe I'll try a different attatching method.

While weight is a consideration, secure attachment is going to be important no matter what you put in. Try making little micro french braids and attaching either with combs, alligator clips, or even sewing the peices in. If you just use one thread (buttonhole weight in a color that will blend in) on a blunt needle for each attachment it is easy to pull it back out or carefully snip it when you are done. This is how I attach tikas and many things to my hair for vigourous dancing that involves head tosses and even being upside down for a while spinning poi.

And thanks! I love this tribe too, and all of the people who put in the time to make it great! Thanks everyone for asking and answering all the questions here.

One of hte best ways to attach hair falls is to sew the falls or dreads onto lengths of lace, like a long fringe. The lace is rough, so it anchors well into your hair

Then put your hair up in buns and wrap teh lace around your buns (or if the falls tone, around a ponytail) and tie a tight knot. Secure lace with bobby pins. You can then wrap an old pair of fishnet tights, some more lace or some thing around the base jam through more pins, chopsticks, hat pins or porcupine quills.

That should stay in all night. It does me twelve hours clubbing anyway, and it looks better than having hair falls on elastic loops that just dangle underneath your bunches. I know it's a personal prejudice, but every time I see dangly hairpieces swinging under someones ponytails it makes me cringe.

I would just use my favorite tribal fix - the rubber band. yes, that's right. You just take one of those good ones that won't get stuck in your hair, and then take some really good yarn that has the consistency you like. There are some great types that really look like dreds! Cut each piece about 4 feet long or so. Then tie each one around your rubber band, just in the middle of each piece of yarn. Next, push all the little yarnies to one side of the rubber band, and make a large or small ponytail with it like normal. After that, arrange the yarn how you like it, pulling around the ponytail evenly (or not evenly, depending on what you like).

A side note - be super careful if you're tempted to stick things in the yarn like shells or metal objects - I dance with a girl who wears dreds. With stuff in them. Lots of stuff. There's nothing worse than getting hit in the head - or eyes!!! - with sharp flying objects!!!!! Instead, tie some things in there that are not so dangerous, but equally cool, like tassels.

    Lovvies!

How about Yarn Falls? You can tie them in some way so they dont fling. They have no weight to them so they wont go flying off, hitting some bystander in the face...LOL, though that would still be funny! But you also wont hurt your own face when they swing. I like the Wool Yarn Falls. Go to wickedharembellydance.com and check those guys out.
