I just inherited a bunch of makeup brushes from my mom. Is there a way I can wash them? She wasn't very careful and there is a lot of loose powder and "whatever else was in the drawer" on them. Suggestions?

Re: washing makeup brushes
Thu, November 27, 2008 - 1:19 AMvery mild soap and water (castille soap would be good i think) Rinse well, pat dry with towel gently and finish air drying in the shape that you want it. If they are good brushes, they are natural hair fiber and need to be treated gently as if it were your hair. Be careful not to pull on or scrunch the bristles.

Re: washing makeup brushes
Thu, November 27, 2008 - 2:40 PMThanks for the link! If you find his other one on how to make your own clenaer, it is a good one, too!
Here is the recipe:
Make-up brush cleanser
Distilled water or bottled 1 c
Alcohol ¼ c
Detergent Palmolive ½ Tbsp
Baby shampoo ½ Tbsp
Leave in conditioner spray in type 1 Tbsp
Stir well, but gently so as not to bubble up. Pour into bottle. -

Re: washing makeup brushes
Thu, November 27, 2008 - 9:29 PMHonestly I wouldn't use alcohol, it will in time ruin the hairs in your brushes. Treat it like the hair on your head, tepid water and mild shampoo. Washing regularly will keep them nice. If they get too weighed down with makeup they will lose shape etc. Have fun! -

Re: washing makeup brushes
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 8:48 AMMy makeup brushes are over 30 years old. ooops, I'm dating myself LOL
They are in terrific shape and I do a thorough cleaning once a month with Palmolive dish washing detergent (it cuts the oils and it is mild), then finish with a conditioner. Before the "already made cleanser", I cleaned my brushes after every use with alcohol, I have had no problems then or now. Maybe it's the alcohol content.
Now, I use the MAC Brush Cleanser instead of the alcohol. I just love it.

Re: washing makeup brushes
Fri, November 28, 2008 - 7:16 AMI wouldn't use baby shampoo on anything other than a baby. It tends to be higher alkaline than regular grown-up shampoo. Baby shampoo is meant to be non-tearing (and tears are more alkaline than skin or hair) and it's also meant to get peanut butter and other sticky stuff out of a baby's hair... since you know everything a little one eats will eventually end up in his/her hair!
I'd just use regular shampoo followed by a drop of conditioner. Rinse both well and shake out excess water. Lay the brushes flat on the counter, bristles extending off the edge of the counter, so that they dry in their usual shape and aren't flattened on one side by the counter.

Re: washing makeup brushes
Thu, November 27, 2008 - 11:41 PMLike some of the other ladies said, use very mild soap and warm water. My personal favorite is the soap I use on my face, called California Baby. It's made for sensitive skin, and it's very gentle, but it gets all the shtuff out of the brushes! Some people recommend special brush cleaners, but if you take one look at the ingredients . . . eek!

Tue, December 2, 2008 - 1:36 PMIm not sure how true or relevant this is but when I used to paint and take art classes they told us not to use hot water because it loosens the bristles

Re: washing makeup brushes
Thu, December 4, 2008 - 10:25 AMwhen i worked for a film company, the makeup artist used the mac brush cleaner as a shampoo once a month, and some coconut smelling natural spray cleaner, brushing onto papertowels.
hehe my makeup artist friend read this thread and cringed at some of the cleaning methods hehehe
