I, uh, have no hair. Suggestions?

I recently buzzed all my hair off less than half an inch long -- I love it and have no intention right now of growing it out. The majority of dancers I see have hair at least down to their chins. That doesn't bother me, because I figure it sets me apart and gives me an individual look, but I do realize that having more hair gives other dancers a lot of options for hairdressing that I don't have.

I think the dramatic lines of an almost bald head especially with dark and smoky eye makeup can look exotic and sexy. But we all know, when you're on stage everything needs to be MORE than when we're on the street, and I worry that my head will look naked or underdone, or god-forbid I'll have a pinhead-thing going on with a lovely dance costume and no hair to dress and emphasize. My hair is *visible* (medium brown), I don't have a truly naked scalp, but still.

The only thing I can really think of is turbans. Sooooo not me. I know I could invest in a wig, but that's not really what I'd like to do either. Dread falls are out, my hair just isn't long enough to attach them to. Any ideas?

I LIVE ON THE SAME PEACHYFUZZY PLANET!

and yes, like you, i LOVE it and won't go long again. check out my profile, i came up with a one-stop, pile-it-all-on headpiece just for this reason. let me know what you think... we might be able to arrange something... :)

You could get creative with hair color, because you have the advantage of cutting it off when it grows out a couple of inches. Bleach a design in your hair, go for a bright color on a tuft in the front to match your costume...so fun!

      WAHOO for the peach fuzz!

I've actually had the same questions and some of the women here directed me too several different types of 'hair' pieces.
The one I've found that i like the most is to 'make' buns on a clear elastic band (you can get it at the fabric store) and attach stuff to em.
I have noticed I have to be careful with weight, but have had VERY good luck with this.

You could make pretty, adorned headbands. Or glue pretty things to your head (with something like DUO... not anyhting that ownt come out when you want it to) or... bleach designs into your hair like someone suggested. You can also paint your hair. Mix glyceryn and water 5050/ Mix this with any loose pigment and paint designs on with a small brush. Ive done this on super short hair and it looked really cute!

If you use hair gel, you could also mix the gel with your pigment and use that after you have styled your hair.

How about using rhinestones... the idea came from Bjork's oceana video... her whole face is covered in rhinestones but instead you can adorn your head.

Oh, seriously, guys, so many great ideas!

I have indeed gone bright magenta in the past and loved it -- mainly I don't do it anymore because of how it tends to come off on sheets and towels. Maybe someday, though. But the foiled-pigment idea is fantastic! I wonder how that would look! I almost want to try it right now :P

I have my first "real" performance coming up in a week and there isn't a lot of pressure for elaborate costuming but I know several of my classmates will wear hairpieces (like, fake hair) of some kind so I may play around with a pretty headband for now, some flowers and like that.

I did pop over to the short hair tribe. I loved the "dreadscarf" and one of those is definitely in the works for the long term, because who doesn't like variety? The buns are a great plan too.

Mo, that headdress really rocks. How does it stay on? Do you ever have stability issues?

Are y'all sure those wig clips don't pinch? They look kind of scary.

Also, I'm now pondering the feasibility of using elaborate bindis on my forehead and temples to make it look like I'm wearing a head ornament or coronet of some kind.

      Thanks!

No, they're not scary at all. And don't pinch either. Go to a beauty supply store & buy a pair - usually they come 2 in a pack for about $2. Pretty cheap, and then you can just try 'em out to see if you like them or not.

    post script...

no, i don't have problems with the headpiece, even in backbends and spins. it is built on a headband, but also has ties. pretty secure.

also, notice how sidewise people look at a woman with short/no hair? our femininity is not tied to our follicles. my ex-bloke saw a recent shave and said "you look like a coconut" and "i don't want to date a skinhead". i was told flat out once: "you have the arse, the tits, the face... if you had long hair you'd be really sexy". my answer? HERE'S A WIG AND A PACK OF TROJANS, HAVE FUN. since "flowing locks" and "crowning glory" seem to be the standard of beauty here in the West, then that's all they need, i can go home and do something else! :D

part of why i cut my hair, too, [and i know this is going far too socio-psychological, but let me explain] was to remove myself from the evil Hair Game that is played on Black women in America. it is Evil, because it comes from centuries of an oppressive conditioning (pun!) that isn't even part of our genetic cultural heritage. Hellooooo, Masai women are considered beautiful with nekkid noggins! There are so many diverse standards in SubSaharan Africa that the narrow-minded and racist environment of Black America really makes me cry, puke, and reach for the buzz-clippers every time.
I'm just speaking from [cruel] experience here, as i know White, Asian and Other women get it just as bad with the short-haired-ness. Shame everyone can't look past the tresses to see our true beauty... *sigh*

Mo, I come from South Africa and went to university with a Black woman who would buzz all her hair off regularly and she looked absolutely stunning, however, she was also a model and had the heioght and stature that Masai women have which menat that the look suited her. However, I have also noticed that not all black women can carry off the no-hair look. That being said, it is also a sign of respect in the Zulu culture to shave your head when there is a death in the family.

Unfortunately these diverse standards which you talk about are being more and more undermined and taken over by western standards of beauty, you need only look at our television presenters on the SABC station childrens programming - teenage black girls with long (fake) hair, talking with a (fake) american accent - to realise how much. So it is not only Black America that is becoming "whitened" but Southy Africa is following suit very quickly!

      Amen Sister!

well to be honest the "whitening" is what happens anywhere there are conquered/subjugated people. the conquerers wnat everone to emulate them, their way is the "right way."
how many latino and asian women bleach their hair to be blonde?
south africa has its own myriad of problems.
and america, where i live, has made it its business to shove it all under the rug.
and part of the problem is that so many people become self-loathign and perpetrate the whole "game" on themselves.

i cut all my hair off a couple of years ago to get away from using relaxers. somewhere along the way, someone convinced us all that it was a great idea to put this chemical on our heads that is a step away from being drano, so that we could have smooth flowing locks and fit in. i mean clearly we wont be accepted without it, right?
        and unfortunately, sometimes it's true.
when you have your own natural hair, people assume that you're some kind of militant afrocentric "sistah girl" who can't be reasoned with. if i decide that the standard of beauty is ridiculous and i throw it off and get my own hair back, suddenly tha tmeans i'm a terrible person.
note: i have no problem with people who like their hair to be straight, but i think you should make that choice completely out of preference, and not about of some subconscious need.

but at the same time, many of the most positive comments i've gotten about myhair have come from white people. many of the most NEGATIVE ones have come from black people. i get snickered at in the store by chicks who have relaxed their hair so much, you can see straight to their scalps. i get told "you have such thick hair, just imagine if it was straight and you could really do something with it."

i usually wear a headpiece towards the front and pile flowers around it, myhair takes up all the space in the back. but it gives me a unique profile, and i can pile quite alot of stuff in it. i dont even have to use clips, i can just cut the stems and stick the flowers straight into my hair because it's dense =p
        so it has it's benefits.

at the end of the day, though, all that matters is what you're comfortable with. i honestly think that one day people will be free from these various petty issues. one day it just won't matter. we like to think of ourselves as really "evolved" but it only takes one little event to see that, under the surface, alot of things haven't really changed.
i do think they will one day though =p

      Good for you Mo!
For every one of those people who think you're crazy because you don't have long "feminine" hair there's someone who thinks your SEXY! There's a whole sub-culture (and no, not skin-heads, they're very misogynist and think women should have long hair) that thinks that women with shaved heads are frikkin hawt! When I shaved my head I can't tell you how many men wanted to touch it. Of course, the hair I have left is also pink, so what can I say? It's quite the thing in the Goth/Industrial sub-culture.
As far as dancing, I go with crazy colors for the hair I do have and then clip in feathers with some flowers as well. I have crazy bling glasses I wear too, so that draws attention upwards. I will eventually do the bindi thing down my head-neck-back.
