Tips for Sunburn?

topic posted Thu, May 15, 2008 - 4:50 AM by
I recently came back from vacation with a wicked sunburn, now I am itching and starting to peel.

Bad news--I have shows coming up and while I love my snakes, I hate looking like one that is in the process of shedding....

Any tips on how to help a sunburn heal faster?? Or better yet, how to remove the dead skin without damaging the layer of skin underneath??

For helping the skin recover, *personally*, I moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, both from the inside (drinking lots of water) and the outside (frequent application of lotion/body butter/oil/etc).
For gentle exfoliation, try a bit of regular ol' baking soda. I use it in the shower; a little bit goes a long way.
    YMMV, good luck!

      ah Ha... I found it.

I didn't have before pictures but the most recent pictures I have are from that event.... its actually not even as red as the pictures show, was VERY pleased with the fact I didn't look ridiculous!

(note I started peeling like a day after that event, which would have been exactly 6 days after... and by peel I mean... one or two square inches, nothing like my whole back)

      good luck!

Yep...lots of tips in that thread...and for exfoliation, I recommend using milk, honey and oatmeal...definitely only use it standing in the shower, cuz it will make a mess...but it's wonderful and makes your skin feel sooooo soft, afterwards...just be sure that if you don't have a trap on your drain, to put something over it or it'll clog up your drains...

Do you know a Watkinds represtentative? Cause they have a fantastic burn cream..
The best thing for sunburn, sadly, is not to get one in the first place... I have had to resort to 45 or above spf sunscreen.. And keep putting it on... One tube of sunscreen barely lasts me for a week of my cruise...

I've seen you perform, so I had this thought of a really neat veil concept of shedding the veils like a skin for a second there, but I digress. One of the best things in that thread was to soak cloths in black tea, and hold them against the burn like a compress. Putting black teabags into a bath also helps. The tannic acid really "pulls" out the burn!

    I hope that helps :)

calendula gel. the other day i splattered myself with grease clear up my arm. i ran to sink and rinsed with cold water. but as i watched i started to blister. i remembered i had calendula and went upstairs to try it on the burn. as i rubbed the gel on the blisters that were forming went away and i was left with just slight red marks. by the next day even they were gone. it should work just as well for sun burns. the sooner you apply the better it works.

Use the actual real aloe vera. Buy the plant and slice it and put it on your skin. Next time you get a tan or sunburn put a little olive oil on your skin, it will help the peeling and keeping the color.

beware of aloe, allergy test first. the worst sunburn of my life was actually an aloe reaction. i burn easy and had been in the sun longer then i knew my sunscreen could protect. so i diligently had my bf slather my exposed areas in fresh aloe. i started to get pink, then pinker and we both just knew i was gonna peal. in reality it was just an allergic reaction.

so like with all things test small areas with any remedies, to make sure you aren't allergic.

and i second the olive oil.

If you start peeling like a leper the day of the performance...try using abeeswax based cream. It really helped me to keep all the little leaves of skin down for a Christmas party one year.
