So I have thin straight hair. Most people use a straightening iron to get it as straight as my hair naturally is (if that tells you anything). I want beautiful curls for performances. I've used hot rollers, sponge rollers (those pink ones) and still the same thing, in 0.5 seconds its flatter than flat! Sure i've tried hair spray, but then its 1 big helmet I put on my head and moves WITH my head. Any suggestions anyone?!?!?!

yikes! I have in between whatever you would like to call it hair.

But, my mother has very straight hair but she was able to use the hot rollers for some body. As far as spiral curls or curls it would have to be a chemical perm.

Another thing is braiding, if you know how to do a french braid before you go to bed it iwll have a wave to it. If you do a french braid into pigtails, it will be a tighter wave. Or, you could do several braids for even a tighter wavy look.

I do know that people do use fake ponytails and such. I know I use one with the I Dream of Genie look.

Here are some links I found for you. Hopefully, someone will chime in who have straight hair.

Your hair in your photo look gorgeous! Doesn't look thin or straight to me so what did you do there? On my straight hair, I use the many braids method. Wet hair, numerous braids (doesn't have to be even or perfectly placed), sleep in it and leave it in as long as possible, spray the heck out of it before removing elastics, use a curling iron on the ends, more spray, and just before performance, shake out upside down and fluff with fingers, more spray! I don't end up with helmut head and this will last me the evening.

You could also go to your hairdresser and get her to show you how to curl your own hair, or trade tickets to your performance for a hair curl the day of.

How healthy is your hair? Usually hot rollers will work even for straight hair if it's healthy. Hair spray does not work though. If you want to add to the curl you have to use a combination of mousse and gel, hair spray is just for setting it at the end... I'm not being clear though am I?

Ok, I have straight hair too but if I keep it healthy and condition I can get big curls if I do it right. Right after washing (while my hair is still wet) I will mousse it thoroughly, if the mousse isn't strong enough for what I want a thin layer of gel also makes the difference. Concentrate on the roots but get it all. Yes it will take a lot. Now blow dry while combing until almost dry (not all the way just most). Keep combing until it finishes drying on it's own if you plan to use a hot iron (not recommended but can work with enough mousse and gel), otherwise put it up in hot curlers or for really tight curls tie it up in rags for the night (at least 6 hours). Once the curls are set remove the curlers/rags carefully. Do not comb or mess with it at all for a few minutes to make sure it has set and then carefully arrange with a very wide tooth comb or just your fingers. Messing with it to much can either make it all fall out or frizz depending on how tight the curls were. Then once it looks like you want it set it with a combable hairspray. You won't be combing it but that type doesn't give you the hammer head effect. Now if you do decide to use a hot iron (and I will sometimes when I don't have the time or patience for the other) you want to spray each section of hair before curling and then a very light set after you are done. It is also important to use small sections to get the strong curl. The more hair in the curler etc the more gentle the curl will be.

I hope that helps. I have performed using this method and my hair stays in all day though it does droop a little by the end of 12 hours.

I think your best bet would be the pain in the rear way of just curling your hair with a curling iron. Get a large barreled one. I've seen your hair, and it is beautiful! Hope this helps. We can always get together some time and try out different things too!

Its gotta be a several step process. This is what I do for my brides that tell me they have impossible to hold a curl hair, nd still want wedding curls.

On your DRY hair, spray all over (liftein hair up to get it underneath also! Get ie EVERYWHERE!!) with a volumizing spray. Blowdry intil hair is all dry again. Rub a light gel through your roots all over your head. Blowdry again until totally dry. Spray each piece of hair with a medium hold hairspray then curl it with your iron. When you take it off the iron, roll it back up on your finger and pin it to your head. Not flat like a pin curl but sticking out kind of. Like if you just pushed the fresh curl straight up to your head and pinned it in place. Does that make sense? Its too early... Repeat over your entore head until every bit of your hair is rolled up and pinned to your head. Mist again all over with hairspray. Do your makeup while you let it set. You want your hair COMPLETELY cool before you unpin it.

When its all cool, mist lightly again and unpin. Finger comb and style and it should last all day! And possible even the next day if you dont shower at night.

Thanks T. Any idea how long this takes? Your brides story is exactly my situation - I'm getting married in a month and half, have naturally super-straight hair and would love to have it down and in waves for the wedding. I want to try this out in the next week or so.

Well, how long it takes depends on how hot your iron gets, how long your hair is, how think it is and how fast you are at curling your own hair... 20 minutes to over an hour? Lol, sorry I can't be any more helpful! For me, med length hair that is thick takes 40 minutes until all the pinning is done. I need a new iron, i use small sections and do it a lot.

Please try it BEFORE your wedding so that you dont end up using too small a barrle and looking like a poodle or too BIG a barrel and not getting much more than volume!! Good luck to you and congrats! (If you want waves, do it all with a 1 inch barrel and then brush hair after its cooled and shape the waves.

Heh, thanks, that is very helpful (especially the barrel size part - I probably wouldn't have thought about that until I went to try it). Unfortunately I have a lot of hair, so it will probably take forever. Good thing the ceremony isn't until late afternoon. :)

probably going to be useful for someone else to do it or help you with it and to do at least one dry run through (I'd do two but I'm paranoid like that) with that same said person once to go through it to see how it goes and what takes the longest what you need, wish you had run out of etc etc, then a second time to actually time it =) But like I said I'm paaaranoid.

I totally didn't know the big day was so soon! awesome =)

Whatever method you use, try not to use a hair brush after you take out your pins (or rag rollers, pin curls, whatever). Try separating your hair with your fingers only. Gently rake them through your hair. You want to somewhat break up the curl pattern, but not brush it out completely. Resort to a brush ONLY if you end up with waaaaay too tight curls and they need to relax a little. If fingers aren't enough, maybe try a wide-tooth pick or very wide tooth comb. But try to stay away from the brush if you can.

I have fine straight hair that won't hold curl. I am not a hair expert and hate to fuss with my hair at all. The only time I do is when I perform. My sister on the other hand loves to fuss, fix, curl, and primp her or anyone elses hair. She has always told me it is not about your hair it is about the product(s) you use. She helped me fix my hair and one of the products she used was a heat activated curling product. I'm sure there are many of them out there, but the one she used was a L'Oreal product purchased at Walmart. She likes the cheapest product that still works. It worked for my hair. I still had to use hairspray, but didn't have to have the helmet effect. She says sometimes it takes more than one product - mouse and gel or gel and heat activated curling spray -, and everyone's hair is different. You will have to experiment a little. Hope it helps!

      Hot Sticks!

I have the same problem. Except that my hair is very thick and heavy as well as straight. There are a few things that I can suggest that might help you out. I'm sorry If i am repeating something that someone else has said, I only had a skim through the replys.
First of all I would have to recomment hot sticks. Although they may give you a tighter curl than you want but maybe when they fall out they will give you a looser more relaxed curl. They are little rods that heat up, and then you wind them in your hair. My hair is very hard to curl, but these work well for me, and they stay in for a long time. They are quick too. It doesn't take long to wind them in once you get the hang of them, and then you can leave them in for 15-20 mins, take them out, shake them out and your good to go. The result is similier to "ragging" which they used to do in the old days (I tried it a few times when I was younger and got an insain curl! ) but you don't have to sleep in them, and you can do it on dry hair.

Next best thing is sleeping in it. weather its pin curls, or spongy things, or rollers (altho that would be hard to sleep in!) the longer you give them to set the beter the curl you will get. I don't normaly do pin curls because they take soooo long to do in my hair, but they do give a great curl. I start with my hair slightly damp (not to wet tho!) do the pin curls, blast them with a hair drier to heat them up, and then go to bed. I sometimes blast them again in the morning, let them cool down and then take them out. I don't know if it really helps, but in my mind it does :)

The next thing you could try is curling them with a heating tool be it tongs or straightner, when you have curled each section, curl it up, and pin it, so that it is still in the curled shape while it cools down if that makes sense. Leave it like that for 20mins and it will help with the staying power of the curl.

oh and always make sure you use a heat protect that will help define curls :) a good one shouldn't make your hair feel gunky :)

Hope that helped a little and made sense as well! (its late)

here is a link and you can look them up on youtube as well, there are a few people with tutorals and reviews/demos on them :)
      good luck!

The pros know, layering will do it, layer the product and the curling method. This works for make up too, you have build up light layers to get anything to really hold up.

Begin just after washing and towel drying with a very light hold styling product, comb through with a wide tooth comb to distribute evenly. Then you can either blow dry while scrunching with your fingers or setting it with those flexy stix, be careful to roll the ends smoothly if using the stix or you'll get unattractive fish hooks ends. You can sleep with the stix because they are soft, you can blow dry them or just air dry though they will take a long time if your hair is long and thick. Choose large diameter stix for loose waves and smaller diameter for tighter mermaid style curls.

Let hair dry completely before handling and like another poster said, do not use a brush., especially with the tighter curls. Once hair is good and dry use a light hold flexible hair spray. Now for the pros' trick, to really reinforce the curl. NOW use a curling iron. Be sure to use a similar size barrel to the diameter of the stix. Again watch the ends to avoid those nasty fish hooks, get a pro to show you how to really use a good hot iron with a rolling clicking motion to avoid hooked ends and getting the product ladened hair stuck and overheated( there is a definite knack to it). Once the hair has been re-curled and let it cool( yes, beauty takes time and effort, as well as tons of product, surprise!) You can finish it with a heavy hold spray called super hold or freeze hold. This method will curl the straightest hair and hold up to just about any thing but does take time, patience and a bit of practice.

Learn how to set, and use a curling iron and even the straightest hair will learn to curl up. Layer the product, light hold to medium to heavy and you'll never fear heat, humidity or wind again. I went through beauty school in the eigthties and had teachers from the sixties, I knows how to make hair do ridiculous things...

Hello everyone! Ok so I was given a tip by Sonia...she said use a Hot Tools by Marcel curling iron 3/4" and medium hair spray. UMM IT WORKED!!!! lasted from 6pm until 12am when I got in the shower!

I washed my hair, dryed it, put the curling iron on 4 (it has instructions on wha tto put it on for the type of hair you have though), and i sprayed my hair lightly by section just before i curled it. and just after i let the curl loose i sprayed it again. The medium hold allows movement but holds it (i used fructis control spray...wow i cant spell) and that sucker lasted a LONG LONG LONG time! Oh another key is do smallllll sections starting off at the bottom and working your way to the top. I also curled my hair pretty much half n half on each side of my head but made sure the curls were going in different directions so it didnt look like i half'ed my head. DO NOT spray the top of your head during the curling because it will look parted. spray that after the curls so you dont get the "look at the part down the center of my head" look.

I also found that i have a hard time using curling irons because of their handle, but the Marcel curling iron was easy to use due to the different kind of handle (maybe i'm backwards). If you need a tutorial on how to use it there are some on youtube. It seemed self explanitory to me.

GUESS WHAT YA'LL... I DID IT!!!! lol and thank you to everyone who offered advice!

Sounds like my hair! I have found the small braids on damp or wet hair works best for my hair. When you undo the braids, just run your fingers thru it, not a comb or brush. As someone suggested, the braids don't have to be evenly spaced either. I was a haircutter/stylist for years, and have had every method of waves & curls done, to no avail. a crimping iron, or small braids are all that worked for me.
