So far my hair is rather meh, but I suppose that's to be expected. It also feels like there's a kind of film on it, so I think I may be using too much. The bars take some getting used to after being accustomed to using liquid shampoo that lathers up loads of suds. I'm also trying to go three or four days between using it, so I'm hoping that my hair will start to look nice soon!

I just had to comment that because of this thread I too have been poo-free for 1 month. My hair has changed a ton (very wavy now and a different texture) but I like it. I used to have to wash/condition every day or I'd be greasy. Now I wash it every other day, alternating between water only and a Shikakai/Amla/Neem mix with ACV rinses. It really doesn't need to be "washed" every other day, but I like to shower and when I shower I like to get my head wet. I'm experimenting with leave-in conditioners that are lighter than oils and the flaxseed gel, but overall I'm super happy and my head no longer itches and I haven't broken out on my back since I quit the poo.

BTW, I only had about a week and a half of greasy hair before it started regulating better.

Hi Lisa I did read about that.

I think that when I say "greasy" I mean "normal oil". I never went greasy when I started...remember too I've been using dog shampoo with only one ingredient being a "derived" natural ingredient.

If I don't wash every day/every other day, it's just far too heavy for me to style and maintain after a few days. It doesn't look greasy or oily (I have a few friends at work and home helping out with honest feedback). It feels fine after a two days or after a workout...I just can't *do* anything with it. In the past year I've been curling and styling now and again. It won't take a curl as well after 48 hours. Also, I *like* the way it feels after a wash. It's way too much hair and way to fine for it to go more than two days without a wash.

If I'm still in detox, that's fine. I still like the way my hair is responding..
If I'm out of detox, washing every day or every other day is working for me. Although it may not work out for other people.

Sorry about reviving this thread - I just want to say thanks...if you've read my previous posts and possibly my blogs, you'd know that I am having allregic reactions to shampoos - painful, scummy, smelly, sore-like reactions.

Dog shampoo was working good for me...until now...I've in love with BS/ACV! I've been using it for two weeks and since day one, it's been fantastic. Here's what I do:

1) Two TSP baking soda to 2 cups water (I started out with two TSP and was happy with that but then I re-read the thread and then tried one TSP - my hair was a bit oily so I went back to two). I add 3 drops vetiver (smells like patchouli).
2) One TSP ACV with 2 cups water. I add 3-4 drops cinnamon oil as inspired by another user.

How I got this to work with my routine (I purchased some bath items to make this easy for me and pretty in my bathroom):
1) I got two 16oz shampoo-type bottles with flip to disc cap (I got them at Trader Joes filled with grapefruit body wash - Dumped the wash into the dispenser in my shower that came with my apartment!)
2) I got a 1 TSP measuring spoon and small funnel
3) I purchased a fancy lotion pump from my local bath store - for the vinegar
4) I also had an unused glass powder jar (with lid) - for the baking soda
5) I found a small jar with a lid that held the essential oil, spoon, and funnel

I figured out that about three pumps of the vinegar equals about one tablespoon. I pump that right into the bottle. Add the cinnamon and fill with warm water. I use the small funnel for the baking soda, add the vetiver and water.

This works great for me and looks nice in my bathroom too!

I've also noticed a few things about my hair....I can wash every day without dryness. In the past, I'd loose a lot of hair in the shower and when I got out, my hair was very difficult to brush wet (therefore...I would wait until dry). My hair was full of tangles (my hair is thick, fine, and straight...and *used to* dread very easily!). Now when I exit the shower, I can run a brush through my hair without ANY resistance! It's like a freakin' shampoo commercial in my bathrooms - perfectly soft and fluffy and untangled hair!

And...my scalp smells GREAT! Especially when working out. My BF loves it too!

Thank you ladies...

Its a product I've never heard of before called WEN by Chaz Dean - he sells a "cleansing conditioner" it looks like u can buy it through him, his informericals, QVC or Amazon...

http://www.wenhaircare.com/index.php?acnt=MSZZD000&s_kwcid=TC-8147-1046242185-e-23394247

I hate informercials, but I have to say I am really tempted to try it out.

For the last 6 months or so I've been using Ojon and its the best shampoo, conditioner I've ever used. I also like what they are supporting.

Quote from their page on Sephora.com

Within the deepest regions of the world's tropical rainforests live highly potent plant extracts known only to the indigenous people who have lived there in harmony with their natural environment for hundreds of years. Ojon introduces wild-crafted (a.k.a. seriously natural) remedies for hair and skin enriched with nourishing Ojon oil found in these flourishing rainforests. The indigenous people continue to harvest these ingredients using traditional methods, ensuring the survival of one of the world's most vital natural environments, yet honoring their purity and potency by keeping them as raw and unspoiled as possible.

It smells so yummy, almost coffee'ish w/ a palm nut oil. Just a dab of their Restorative Hair Treatment totally transforms my curly hair into manageable shiny locks. My hair dresser was amazed at the transformation in after 3 months of using it. I use the Restorative Hair Treatment every other week or so. I put it in my hair, comb it through, focus on the ends and let it soack in for a few hours while I do housework, workout, etc. just keeping the hair wrapped up in a bun, then I shampoo it out.

I have been happy with Ojon, but I'm really intersted in this WEN stuff. If anyone has tried it please let me know!!!

I know that a highly acidic rinse, especially vinegar and such, is very damaging, since it is too far on the acidic side of the PH. I rarely buy anything from the drugstore. You need a serious 'reconstructor',( not just a conditioner) The best is by Biolage', Nexus or Paul Mitchell. Then use a moisturizing shampoo like Nexus Therape', and /or some moisturizer daily, like Nexus Humetress. The good news is that there is a line of Generics at beauty supply stores, which is alot cheaper, and does the job well. I used to mess with my fine, straight hair alot when I was in the business, and many years later. But I found that if I just stopped perming it, putting alot of color on it, etc. --- it grew ! Now its my natural platinum silver at age 63. General rule of thumb --- If you gotta color, then don't perm, because its a double whammy of damage ! Good luck!

as a stylist, I ask my clients what type of brush they use. It can make a difference. If it pulls on the hair too much then, it will break it (especially when wet). If you pull on hair that is color treated....even worse! Also, if you pull your hair back wet into a pony tail or something similar, this too can cause breakage. This is why; when hair is wet, it stretches and as it dries it shrinks, so if you pull it back fully stretched wet into that band, what do you think happens as it dries? It BREAKS! Also, a flat iron without any protectant can cause heat damage and for the hair to look dry. Hope this helps!!

Wow! so many replys to your post!!! Thereis alot to say about this topic for sure!
as a hairdresser of 17 years, I would skip the perm idea and let your hair be in it's healthiest virginal state. don't be afraid of a little color to add body , just be willing to invest in an experienced and trusted hair dresser who uses professinal products. I reccomend Aveda color to preserve the hairs integrity. You can always add curls by sleeping in rag curls or braids. that is a much healthier option than a perm.
I also reccomend trying 'Purology' products. They are organic and sulfate free. worth every penny too! I have never used anything better! and I have been at this hair biz for a long time. give it a try.
consider when trying the vinegar method: it will change your hairs p.h. to a dry state.
just shampoo less often if you can and always condition!!!
good luck!

Get a large squirty water bottle and fill with a mix of 1/4 Apple cider vinegar and 3/4 rainwater. Keep it in the shower, Use this as a sparing rinse to neutralise the alkaline soapiness of your hair.

When nearly dry use the tiniest dab of olive or coconut oil rubbed between your hands and apply on your hair at the ends in particular.

I haven't gone completely 'poo-free, but it's close. On NaturallyCurly.com, it's referred to as "modified CG" (Curly Girl)...that is, I use shampoos that don't have SLS in them, and also avoid silicones so I don't *need* the SLS to remove the buildup.

I have done the baking soda/vinegar thing, and it is nice occasionally to remove buildup, but my hair does like conditioner, I have to say. It's long thick, curly hair, and it needs conditioner and product.
So.
What I end up "cleaning" with, since you asked, is usually just conditioner--as the CG method points out, you don't need soap to clean, you need friction and water. Something to give the friction a bit of lubrication--like conditioner, which already has some surfectants--helps with this. If I do use shampoo--even the SLS-free kind, I coat the ears-down part of my hair with cheap conditioner first, then only suds up the scalp, rinse...then condition as usual. It looks like your hair is straight, so this may be completely unnecessary and make your hair greasy. It will take a bit of experimenting to find what works best for you.

But! Shampoo--or at least SLS--free may still be good for you. Or hell, cut back to only shampooing every 2 or 3 days.
Only warning is that your hair will most likely freak out and be a bit greasy for a couple weeks while it's adjusting. Have patience. It will most likely pay off and your hair will be much easier to manage.

Good luck.

I definitely endorse at least trying to go off shampoo for awhile to see if it works on your hair, but keep in mind that it seems to take the scalp awhile to adjust. I gradually adjusted by shampooing first every other day, then every few days, once a week, etc until I cut shampoo out all together, but then again I knew I wanted to forget shampoo all together.
How often do you wash, and with what? Most shampoos contain harsh detergents that dry out the hair and strip away needed oil (which causes the scalp to produce more oil really fast, hence the oily roots), and most conditioners contain silicones that can seal the hair shaft, locking out oil and moisture, which only exacerbates the dryness problem. I've heard that some people's hair reacts well to silicones but AFAIK these tend to be people with very thick and coarse hair.

Most of the time I wash with silicone-free conditioner (just slather it on and let it sit for a few minutes; it can clean very well without drying or stripping, depending on the brand), and I do clarifying ACV rinses from time to time. When I do shampoo, which is rarely, I use brands that don't contain SLS (sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate).

I wash my hair once or twice a week at most, and lightly oil the ends with jojoba or coconut oil to keep them from drying out, especially in the winter. Heat-styling also causes damage and splitting, so I let my hair air-dry.

Since I moved away from shampoo and standard commercial products I've noticed a dramatic decrease in the number of split ends.

For people who are concerned about using animal products.....I stopped using Hask Placenta hair products in 1989 when I was in Cosmetology school.

It is, in fact, real placenta. It used to be human placenta but I think it's taken from animal sources now. I won't go into the gory details, but if you give it a little thought you'll realize how it's harvested (no, it's not from happy little organic dairy farms).

Additionally, placenta is full of hormonse and those hormones ARE absoprbed through your scalp. Placenta products have been demonstrated to cause breast growth in toddlers and are suspected to cause breast cancer in people of African descent. This is due to the concentration of hormones absorbed when the products are used.

More info: http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/brand.php?brand_id=1637

Also -if a label says "hydrolized protein," but does NOT specify that it is plant protein, it is most likely animal blood from slaughterhouses. Not trying to gross you guys out, but I think it's important to know what we use on our bodies so we can make informed choices when purchasing. What we spend our money on tells the cosmetic industry what we are willing to turn a blind eye to and what we won't tolerate.
