parabens?

After the price of my regular facewash went up a fourth time I finally got fed up, grabbed the first bottle off the shelf that had a cute design on it and took it home. It appears to be a bit of a miraculous discovery! Not only does it smell good enough to eat but it after a couple of days waiting for my skin to settle down from the change it appears to have done wonders for my complexion. My skin is much softer and clearer and the dry patches are clearing up along with the zits.

When I looked at the bottle it has "Does not contain parabens" written on it. What's a paraben? Is it something that I should avoid regularly? Is it the absence of said parabens that has done such wonders for my skin?

Parabens are chemical preservatives, and most used in the cosmetic industry (soaps, shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gel, etc) are synthetically-produced (ie, not occuring in nature). While they are widely considered to be non-toxic, and thus are used so often, it is still a synthetic chemical & so some people warn against them as possible carcinogens.

Your skin could very well have been having a reaction to these chemicals/preservatives in the former products, but it's hard to say for sure. Note that products without parabens in them will, by their very nature, tend to spoil faster - so keep an eye on them.

Parabens are chemical preservatives found in all sorts of cosmetics, in fact, they're in just about everything, shampoos, face washes, shaving creams, etc... It's difficult to find products that do not contain them.

In recent years, there has been some research to suggest they may be harmful. Apparently large amounts of parabens do bad things to lab mice, they have been linked to birth defects and may be carcinogenic. I think what is still unclear, is since most products containing parabens are used on the skin, not ingested, is how much is actually absorbed into the body and if they are retained there. I

It's almost impossible the completely eliminate parabens, but I've gone on a minimization routine, where I look for products that don't contain them. Because they are chemicals, it's very possible that if you have sensitive skin, that they could irritate your complexion. so that switching may have helped you.

I'm working on eliminating parabens from the producs I use after reading an article my younger sister showed me about how they find very high concentrations of them in breast cancer tissue.

I believe parabens are derived from petroleum products? my hubby has a hypersensitive allergy to pertroleum products to the point that the fumes at a gas station get him itchy, and most lotions containing parabens cause him to break out in a sunburn-like rash. If you are sensitive to other petroleums (vasaline) this may be the case, but as far as I know its somewhat rare. Look at the entire ingredient list and research anything with a chemical-sounding name that you don't know what it is.
