there is a great product line called Paul Brown that came from Hawaii. infact their main salon and tranning facillity is still there

to help tame hair you can wash your hair 8 hours before the show or the night before and put it in a high bun, braid or braids

"zulu knots" are great not only for tamming curls but a fun hair style for shows

Thanks! And it *really is* and none of those Youtube tutorials do anything with super-curly hair it seems...

I'm also a proponent of henna. It's been keeping my hair looking healthy and it blended to a really nice, natural color with my brown hair.

You'd probably get a nice coppery colour...I actually have no clue what my natural colour is, anymore...I never let it get that long past a colouring to notice...;-)...but it's actually a medium, ashy brown...I've been doing one form of red or auburn on it for over 20 yrs and it's usually got a medium tone, so since the henna doesn't lift colour and only deposits it, I was basically just getting a dark auburn...not quite as vivid as I like, so I supplement with a more vivid tone...but I do love the other benefits of henna...

Aloha from Hilo! ^.^ I've always had curly, frizzy hair and moving to Hawaii only made it worse. Nothing I tried helped in the slightest... until I tried henna! And let me tell you, I am in love! At first I just tried a henna "glossing" (I made a paste with my 3g sample package and lemon juice, let dye release about 12 hours, mixed with conditioner and let sit on my hair for 2 hours) - and that got me hooked. My hair had never been so shiny, soft and manageable. I ordered a full supply right away and have hennaed twice since then. I have not had a singe frizz and my curls have actually been pretty! I used to try the flat iron thing, too, but that only made it worse. Now, if I feel like going smooth and sleek it's not a problem. You should check out the henna for hair website - they have a ton of info there. http://www.hennaforhair.com/

A bit of fair warning: using henna in your hair seems to be highly addictive! ^.^

Other than that, I still do the sock bun/hair falls thing when doing tribal and fusion stuff. Or sometimes instead of the sock bun I will do a high pony tail or pigtails, attach the falls and twist everything together into a messy bun. But my hair isn't extremely long yet, either. Once I grow it out more I will be doing a lot more with my natural locks. Good luck to you!

What color was your hair before you added the Henna?
Myhair used to be "calico blonde" so said my nana- I have heard other describe the non descript color as "dirty blonde" or "dishwater blonde"- neither sound particularly glamorous, eh? But now in my ripe old age- it seems like it is turning mere mousy ashy brown... not even brown cuz that implies a nice warmth to it- it is definitely ashy but not even blonde of any sort aside from a stray strand or two near the ends. I thought of trying black (since I never have before) but don't want to look scary (I am very pale). Red seems safe as my kids are red heads (though there are many ways to go wrong- did Ronald McDonald once by accident in college hehe)... I wonder what Henna would do to it.
hmmmmm....

Oh, I totally know your problem! I used to live in Hawaii as well - and no, it won't stay straight! Right now I'm having fits with my hair because it's very dry here in Spokane right now and it WON'T curl. Even if I use an iron it only stays in for a couple of hours. Anywho,
I like to make it really curly (I always style it so that ti's "neat" for performances) and play with volume, parts, and if I have time on my hands I'll put pin curls in, hide my part, etc.
I'd reccomend looking at some pictures online or something, like google "curly hair updos" or something. :)
Good luck!
Sorry I didn't have too much advice, I'm not terribly good with hair. :P

I have crazy thick, very curly waist length hair. One of my favorite tricks is to turn upside down and pull it all into a ponytail very high on my head. It keeps my neck cool when dancing and you can pull some of the curls forward without getting in your eyes. I can then put barrettes, a headband, flowers, etc on the top. I also use a curling iron to get all the curls going in the right direction as they tend to curl every which way! -Freya

I have waist length curly hair as well that doesn't straighten. :)

I tend to leave it down a lot of the time with just a headdress, if I want to dress it up. I did do an up style to go with the curls at a show recently... I just took a hair elastic with a flower on it, but my hair in a ponytail and then just grabbed sections of curls and kept pinning them into the ponytail until I had a really poufy bun. It's a lot messier than the kind of styles Moria and such wear but it's different hair so *shrug*. You can see it here: http://www.renaissancefaire.net/20090528-Iqaat/page0055.htm

I also will take my hair wet, put it in a ponytail only pulling it half through the last time and then use chopsticks to push that loop up and pull the curls around (my describing sucks). I did that and pinned it up a bunch with some flowers here: http://www.renaissancefaire.net/20090502-Oasis/page0114.htm

You could do side french braids or twists and leave the bulk of the back hanging down, with all kinds of pretty falls in it...or there's always the sock bun idea...even curly hair can be twisted into a bun...

Too bad you're not around here...back in my hair dresser days, I always got the curly haired girls...I think I was the only one that understood that curly hair has special needs...

My hair is pretty long (about waist length) so I feel like I should have some interesting options but I can't seem to come up with anything cool and usually just wear it down... interested if anyone has any cool photos they can post of some neat up-dos for curly haired gals.
I really like the hair styles of Moria Chappell & some of the other tribal stars but I can't figure out how to make my hair do that... I notice most of them seem to have straight hair & this may have something to do with it.
*and I can't straighten my hair- I've tried my whole life, but I live in Hawaii & the humidity makes any attempt a no-go frizzle-woe
