yeah one time me and my best friend found one in our mothers house (probably around the early 70's) and thought it was a rat in her dresser drawer! It scared us big-time!!!! No panty hose needed--just formed into a half-moon shape (kinda like forming a dread-lock)

Hey again!
Well, turns out the hastings near my house carries Bump-its now, so I went ahead and got some!
Turns out, the actually work really well! I love the way the make my hair look. I can't make my hair have volume no matter how much hairspray I use, or how much I backcomb it. So the bumpit works really well, and the teeth actually hold it in! But just for good measure, when I perform, I put two hair pins in the back. And no one would be the wiser! My hair is thick, so I don't have to backcomb it, and it doesn't show through. It's awesome! I'll post pictures soon. :)

you don't happen to have pics of this do you? I'm having a hard time visualizing it.

To use two bumpits, you place the med sized bumpit above your ears (following the standard directions) then move back, like half an inch to an inch and place the larger bumpit (as per usual) then bring the hair covering the front bumpit over the back bumpit and smooth. You can then pull your hair back into a ponytail or leave it down. I like it best in the pony.

I use my bumpit recently on a trip to Alaska and it worked out fab! I put it in, in the morning, then drove two hours to the airport, and then spent 14 more hrs in airports and on airplanes. When I arrived in Anchorage at 3 in the morning my friends were amazed that my hair still looked that good. I was too. For some reason flying makes my hair flat and kinda greasy feeling and it never looks good. I love my bumpit. I wore it at the wedding I went to attend. I used one of the updo's that they have in the pamphlet and I never could have achieved it without the bumpit. Be sure to read the instructions for the best results.

Okay, end of tirade!

To get that really "high hair" without a bumpit: grab a good amount of hair at the crown and put it into a ponytail. On top. Secure the ponytail with either a rubberband (they're miserable, but they will hold up during an 8 hour exhibition show) or a fabric covered elastic (not as good because your hair will attempt to slither through it). Now, pull the pony tail across your crown using both hands. What you're doing is making the base of the ponytail wider. You will need bobby pins to secure the hair once it's been pulled sideways. You will also need to pull a little hair forward and secure it too with the bobbypins. What you're doing is hiding the ponytail base and simutaneously making very! large hair. A little hair spray will hold it for sure, but you really don't need to spray this. My Mom showed me how to do this a few years back. She said during the 60's big hair was all the rage and that's how they mostly did it. This will work with hair from shoulder length on down. I have done this with one of my troupe mate's hair and she has very fine, thin hair. It looked great and stayed in place! Great spot for those flowers too!

I recently bought a pack of Bumpits at Target and was surprised when I opened the box that they are made of hard plastic. Can't begin to imagine one of those things wobbling on top of my head- I tried one of them and was not impressed, and it didn't stay in place at all, AND showed through my hair, and my hair sagged over it. Took them back for a refund.

I think a rat is the way to go. You can also make them from cheap fake hair, which costs about $3 a package (if the brush pickings are too gross & dusty), and old-school invisible hair nets, as mentioned above. Rat up the hair, shape it and tie into the hair net, cut off the excess and pin in place with the knot hidden against your scalp; brush your own hair over it.

I've made something similar to the old 'hair rats' out of a scrunchie made from synthetic hair that matches my own. Just rolled it up into an invisible hair net, use a couple of bobby pins to hold it, then smooth my own hair over it. Works great and I don't have to backcomb or have a hard lump of plastic on my head.

YES! I actually did mine in the car too ala rear view mirror as well, right before going out for dinner, and it worked great! I put two in as well, had a helluva fem-pomp going on, fun stuff, and soooo much quicker and low maintenance than teasing etc...

I did try to use my brush cleanings but i just couldn't get it to sit right, the bumpit was MUCH easier, I did it with only the little mirror in my sunvisor in my car (I couldn't wait to get home) and it looked pretty good. I even put two of them in and it was pretty dramatic but I liked it!

Back in the day of our Gibson Girl great grandmothers, in order to get the hair-do, they needed more hair than was growing on their heads. So, they either bought it, or saved the hair from the brushes, rolled it into a "rat" size and shape, pinned it to the head, and smoothed her growing hair over it to look fuller. Thus a "rat" and the ratting of hair- sometimes called teasing and back-combing.

My mom used to roll her hair on orange juice cans; she had to sleep with a pillow folded up under her neck! I'm 34 and I ironed my hair a few times as a teenager. I have pretty straight hair but wanted that "stick straight" look. It was easy but a little . . . worrisome.

We ladies of more mature years never did anything like backcombing or teasing our hair. We ratted it right down to the roots, then used half a can of industrial strength hairspray.to hold the thing in place And that was after a night of sleeping on brush rollers with the holding picks stabbing into our scalps. We ironed our hair too. Really. With an iron. The same one used to press clothing. So we could have stick straight hair. No styling products like now. Just shampoo, cremerinse, hair spray, lemon juice in the summer.

Think "Hairspray"

OMG!!! The shipping on these things is highway robbery! What are they made of? Lead? good grief! I ordered two sets (one discounted) one for me and one for my sister who's birthday is in April. The shipping was almost thirty dollars! $30! Bringing my total to over sixty dollars. Plus they don't give you a chance to review your order and remove something if you change your mind. You click "order now" on the home page, they ask for all your credit card info, then ask if you want to get another set for 14.99, then ask you if you want the how to dvd for the low low price of 9.99+4.99 s&h then they ask if you want some of those "strap perfect" thingies, and then asks if you might like them in wedding white ("not in a box, not with a fox" THANK you muchly) and then boom! your done. "Thank You! Your order is complete" Subtotal $34.98 Shipping $29.80 Tax $0.00 (thank goodness) Order Total $64.78. From there your only options are "Print your Confirmation" "Back to Home Page"

Phew! I needed to get that off my chest! I think I will cancel my order and just order a set for myself and let my sister borrow them and get her something else for her b-day.

Yep, that was me. Bumpits. It worked pretty well. Had to play around with it to get the hang of it and you still have to do a little teasing but I was pleased with the result. The thing has teeth so it grips your hair and stayed in through 3 numbers! Then I took it out and just brushed my hair.

did she use the bumpit, and if she did do you happen to know how it stays put? I can't see how the thing just doesn't fall over in your hair, especially in the 'dos where the hair is not pinned down behind the device.

i had seen the bumpit ad somewhere before and it seems like a nice idea, but i have very very thin hair and would doubt the hair on the crown of my head would be enough to cover it sufficiently....

we sell the hair poufs at my work and people buy them....ive never seen them being returned, however ive never heard any feedback about them either. :(

having thin, flat hair i am always looking for something to give me more volume aside from hairspray+backcombing.
i do have a hair rat that works great though, and it's my own hair, so the color is perfect LOL.

i ahvent used them but i would. i know for me. if im doing a bun...i go ultra sleek and want it high so i use a sock i rolled up and i tkeeps it perky and plump and makes a perfect cinnabun look, so for those retro looks a bumpit would be the same thing, and its healthier for you rhair than teasing the crap out of it and using ton sof hairspray

Hmm!
Haven't tried 'em or even hear of them until now, but it looks like it would be really handy for stage! My hair is waist long and HEAVY, so it's always flat at the crown. Once these hit stores and get a little less "gadgety" I'll probably try one out! Any one else had experience with them?

I've heard of two products lately that are supposed to helps you create the look of bumped up hair that was so popular in the 60s. Bumpits, a product I've been seeing on TV, and Vidal Sassoon's hair poufs, which have been mentioned on message boards discussing the Bumpits product. I like the idea of being able to do a retro look like that without all the teasing, so I was wondering...have any of you tried either of these products? If so, what do you think?
