Have you guys ever run across a more permanent wig for under $50?
I am losing all my hair, not by choice, and needless to say me and boyfriend don't appreciate this fact. It takes me so long to grow my hair, and now it's leaving.
I don't need to sleep in it, but what about for performances, clubbing and whatever? Most wigs have combs to attached to your real hair, see previous statement. How would I make it stay?

Re: Permanent wigs
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 8:27 AMSee if there is a wig shop near you. You could go in and ask questions and find out more about these things. What I do know is that nicer wigs (ie: not halloween wigs) come in sizes, like hats. If you get the right size, you won't have to worry about attaching it to anything. There are some really nice human hair wigs out there that look very nice. They can run in the $150 range. It might be worth saving up for one of those. They are more expensive but they will last you longer, be more comfortable and look better. Good luck. :o)

Shamsa is right. The better quality wigs are attached to a wig cap that fits snugly on your head - think swim cap with hair ;-) . And you'd probably be more satisfied if you saved your pennies for higher quality.

Re: Permanent wigs
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:41 PMIt would be indeed very easy for me to do that. Problem being, I shave my head about every 2-3 years. I just quit on my hair at that point. And it's been about a year and a half since I shaved my head, and I was trying to sit in it for the long run, try 4-5 years this time, and BAM! total random reason pertaining to nothing as to why I might lose my hair.
Now it's doctor recommended but not necessary at this point, so I am keeping my fingers crossed I won't have to, but I want to be prepared if I do. -

Re: Permanent wigs
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 6:08 PMI've had serious hair loss from medication in the past, and wore a wig everyday for 2 years. Reasonable quality human hair wigs cost thousands of dollars - and are totally unnecessary. For around a hundred, you should be able to find a very high quality synthetic wig. Look for one that has a visible "scalp" - It makes the wig undetectable. The good synthetic hair looks and feels like regular hair. You use a special shampoo to wash it. You can comb it, but you cannot use any heat implements on it. When I first wore mine, I received tons of compliments from folks who didn't know it was a wig - on my beautiful, shiny hair.
Good luck, and best of health of to you.

Re: Permanent wigs
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 7:26 PMI have had Alopecia for over half my life and have been wearing wigs for over twenty years now. They have come along way in that time. I have only been dancing for a little over a year so I've always done so with wigs. Wigs do come in sizes small, avg and large plus they normally have straps on the inside to adjust the size even further. So far I haven't had any trouble with my wigs slipping as long as I make sure the fit is snug. My skin is sensitive to adhesives. I even balance a candle tray with them and haven't set myself on fire yet :) If I need extra hold I will wear a stretchy head band with it. I will pull a little hair to the front of my ears and put the head band behind my ears with top of the head band more to the front of my hair, just behind the bangs. Right now we are wearing 3 yards of material attached to a comb and so far so good. I just put the comb under the head band way to the front. It is mostly trial and error. Plus, I can build a collection of colors and styles to go with my outfits. It becomes another great accessory. Look for small shops in your area. You can find great deals. I found a little shop in my town and I can get great wigs for under 50.00 and they look good and wear good and I wear them every day. -

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 9:47 PMI recant my private message. Your info was not only helpful, but reinforced what local bald chick said. And I wonder if she has what you have, she said it was rare to get in the teenage years, but she did, and it causes her body to treat her hair like a disease and consequentially try to get rid of it. That's not what I have, but is that what Alopecia is?

I get that one for my birthday even if I don't lose my hair!!! I have to get it in a "normal" color for my job *pout* but it is SNAZZY!!!! -

Re: Permanent wigs
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:25 AMSounds like we do have the same affliction. Your bodies immune system goes a little haywire. It is a type of auto immune disease I think. I had the first signs of it at 13 but it didn't come on full force until I was 17. But if the worse thing that ever happens to me is I loose my hair I'm ok with that. You just learn to have fun with it. Your first wig can be the I am a responible employee and the next one can be the in your wildest dreams one. lol Another perk of having a wig. You over sleep or wake up and no power etc. Your hair is still going to look great. Plus you never have to worry about touching up your roots. lol

Re: Permanent wigs
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:55 AMI'm so sorry that this is happening to you. I've worn/sold wigs for a long time and medical wigs are often more comfortable than regular ones. I have an acquaintance that sells wigs for very reasonable prices, at internationalwig.com though I don't think she has any medical types. I thick wig cap, made out of the top of a pair of tights might help. I always made my own as I couldn't every find one when I needed to....you just put the tights on your head, the waist band where you want it to fit and make a tight 'ponytial' out of the legs with a rubber band. Take it off and snip everything off close to the rubber band and stitch under it like crazy. Slip off the rubber band and presto you have a new wig cap that will last forever. The trick is to kind of flatten things out where everything comes together...you might have to snip some more, restitch, etc. Good luck! -

Re: Permanent wigs
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:24 PMHi Octavia:
These might be a bit pricey, but it might give you an idea for wigs, wefts, etc. www.hairextensions.com/home.php
I was at a show a few days ago and they were selling these. There are long ones, medium length ones, clip ons, real hair, synthetic hair, temporary highlights, fullness wigs and one that I think you would need help applying which lasts about six months.
You may be able to find a lesser cost brand of something on the website, but those options are the closest things to a permanent wig that I've seen.

Re: Permanent wigs
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 4:46 AMThis has nothng to do with wigs, and may have nothing to do with the reasons for your hair loss, but ...
Sometimes Biotin (vitamin B7) supplements help with hair loss. Most multivites have very little biotin. B vites work best when taken together (B-complex).
Here is a good overview. Warning/disclaimer: This is a commercial site. I have no connection to it, never ordered from them, and know nothing about their actual products, it just presents the info nicely.

Re: Permanent wigs
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 7:14 AMAlia:
Does it help with growing hair long as well as making it fuller?
And why do pregnant women tend to have hair that grows fast? I've always heard it was from prenatal vitamins, but I'm wondering if it has more to do with the excessive production of estrogen due to the pregnancy than with the vitamins themselves.
Thanks,

Re: Permanent wigs
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 3:58 AMThose are good questions, and I don't know the answers.
My guess (for growing hair longer) is that it might be worth a shot: if your hair is brittle and breaks off, maybe it could help. It also helps (paradoxically) to get your hair trimmed regularly, which keeps it strong at the ends. Silica (bio-sil or something like that) is also supposed to make your hair (and nails) stronger.

Re: Permanent wigs
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 9:31 PMHI Azeeza-
Pregnant hair growth is 100% based on the hormonal changes in the body. Many a pregnant woman over the ages have had changes in hair growth when prenatal vitamins didn't exist, so hair growth during pregnancy has nothing to do with vitamins, though perhaps the vitmains might make a pregnant woman's hair more luxurious, shiny, etc.
As for the original topic, though I don't know anything about wigs, I do live by the motto "you get what you pay for". Not that you have to spend a fortune on a wig, but it'll probably be worth it to spend a little more to get good quality. -

Re: Permanent wigs
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:15 AMI was told that it isn't that pregnant women's hair grows faster - but that it is fuller because the hormones decrease shedding of the hair - so you get to keep more of it. By the same token, once you have a baby you often lose a lot of hair. -
-
Re: Permanent wigs
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 10:54 AMYou're right Perela - although we frequently use the word "grow", it is indeed a misnomer. The better word is "shed". A pregnant woman's hair does not shed as frequently as it usually might (since we all shed hair everyday). But once the baby is born, all that extra hair comes out. And you're not really losing more hair than before, but rather you are merely losing the excess hair that you would have lost anyway over time had you not been pregnant. It's just that it al comes out during a short time period (well, at least it did for me), so it seems like you're really losing a lot!
Back to your regularly scheduled topic...

Re: Permanent wigs
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 9:57 PMI have some crazy hair and I can't have two tone colors when I go to work. So I got a wig off of ebay. They got things that are human hair for under 50 dollars. You just have to be patient and keep your eyes open. Another thing you might consider is taking hair vitamins. I don't know your condition, but if you are just not getting enough nutrients this is what my Mother and I both take. She has hereditary baldness. Luckily, I don't have this (or at least not yet) , but I do a lot of hair processing. I need to keep my hair strong so I take this one thing called Hair, Skin, and Nails. You can get it for like 13 dollars. You get like over a 100 pills and you just need to take one a day. They will always tell you to take more, but that's just to keep up profit. People only need like a certain amount per day. One or two is enough. If you can't find Hair Skin and Nails, than take Prenatal vitamins for pregnant women. It promotes hair growth and has the same things as HAIR, SKIN, and NAILS.
I hope this helps.
