I've been trying to stretch out my hair washings to once per week or more. I can't seem to go more than 4-5 days whether I use baking soda or shampoo. I was super excited to try the no 'poo because I thought I could go much longer btwn washes, but it's not cutting it for me. I've been working on this for about 6 months with no improvement. How often do those of you who no 'poo go btwn washes?
I'm wondering if I should be brushing my hair out every so often to move the oil down, but I have wavy hair and doing that will remove the beloved waves.
FWIW, here's my routine. I either shampoo/conditioner or baking soda/apple cider vinegar once per week. Mid-week, I do a water rinse. I started alternating btwn the S/C and BS/ACV because just BS/ACV was giving me dandruff.

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 8:54 AM4-5 days seems about right to me. I use a non-SLS shampoo & that's about how long I can go. But it's a significant improvement over having to wash every other day. But, also, the switching back & forth might be causing some of your issues - your scalp doesn't have time to regulate itself. A few questions for you:
* When you do shampoo/condition - are you using a non-SLS shampoo & a non-silicone conditioner?
* Are you using any other hair products (gel, mousse, etc) when you do the BS/ACV? -- personally, I found when I stopped using these, the dandruff stopped for me -

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 11:59 AM4-5 is good? I guess I was trying to push it too far. I used to wash my hair only every 4 days before I started the no 'poo (not that I have fabulous, non-greasy hair; I'm just kinda lazy).
I'm not sure if it's non-sls and non-silicone, which probably means they contain those ingredients. I *never* use hair products. I'm a natural kind of gal.
I do live in humid S. Fla, so that may be contributing to the greasiness.

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 1:06 PMYe, that's generally about as long as you can go without showing the effects of everyday life...and I agree with Bella...switching back and forth will only exacerbate the problem...it keeps your scalp from being able to adjust to one method...it's about like my skin...if I switch soaps or lotions, I'll go thru a detox to where my skin will be fine for a few days, then it will shed like I've got body dandruff for a few days...you really need to pick one method and stick to it...
As far as the humidity goes, it won't cause more oiliness...just more sweat! -

Mon, July 20, 2009 - 1:42 PMHmm. Ok, good to know. I'll prob just go back to shampoo, but maybe I'll find a nice, "environmental," and "green" one. -

Mon, July 20, 2009 - 1:47 PMTry a natural shampoo bar...I use one that I absolutely love...they don't have the detergents and additives that the mass produced products do...
Here's the one I use...www.balmzara.com/page26/page26.html

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 1:06 AMI live in Durban, South Africa which is humid all year round, but has incredibly high humidity livels in summer. My hair gets oilier in summer than in winter because of this humidity. When I've been to Cape Town which is also a coastal city but has almost no huimdity my hair was far less oily. So while you do sweat more with humidity, hair also gets oilier quicker.

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 2:18 PMHey, I no 'pood for about three months or more, and I wasn't getting consistant results. Some days I would get out of the shower and my hair would dry and be super super dry, other times it would dry and still be so oily you couldn't really tell that I had washed it, so I switched to Alba 'hair wash' but it contains among other things something called sodium lauryl sulfoacetate. Does anyone know anything about this chemical? I like the shampoo and conditioner it leaves my hair super shiney, but I would like to know more about it so I know my risks. Thanks in advance!

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 5:56 PMSodium lauryl sulfoacetate is a form of "SLS". These are the "active" ingredients in shampoo that really get your hair clean -- but it also strips the HELL out of your hair, which is why it's recommended to get one without if you can. It is also why most conditioners contain silicone (which causes massive buildup on your hair) -- because without the silicone, the SLS would leave your hair feeling very brittle. I would try to use one without it, if possible - read the label, though - it's in 99% of shampoos. One of the easiest sulfate-free shampoos to find these days is L'Oreals new EverPure line. Just remeber that organic does not equal sulfate-free. Read the labels...

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 6:28 PMI typically us BS/ACV once a week (after back to back class / rehearssal when i'm extra sweaty). On weeks I am fortunate enough to go to a Bikram Yoga class, I will BS / ACV after that as well. I really play it by ear every week, but typically I'm "washing" my hair once a week. I try and stay out of the florida heat as much as possible, but I could see if I'm outside on a regular basis then I would BS more often. -

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 7:03 AMi work out a lot, and I have a job that keeps me out in the elements, w/ a hard hat and a head scarf on so my hair gets squished and is the first thing to get sweaty a lot.
I will wash w/ CO and rinse w/ ACV almost every day. It seems to be the happiest mix to just get basic sweat off. I use Cocunut oil every other day or so, but I really slap it on and just let it soak (helps almost no one sees my hair hardly ever during the day or during work outs =) )
I will use BS and ACV maybe once every two weeks for a good deep clean. I don't have to many problems, I think my routine still needs tweaking cause while its not 'dirty' it sometimes just looks more greasy than I'd like, but it FEELs good and healthyso I'm not hell bend for tweaking. =) I get some scalp itchiness sometimes but that has been diying off and happens less and less. I've been no poo for 7 months now. =)
Face is still spotty, definitly working that still to make it happy happy.
By the way... you guys who support this, are awesome. So cool people do this and support the not normal and the healthy. Makes me happy no matter how crazy people think I am! -

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 8:45 AMOK, so you "wash" your hair with coconut oil? How does that work? I always thought CO was conditioner, which was weird, but, now this?
Do tell! -

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 9:22 AMNo...not wash with it, but use it on the hair after washing...mostly, you just use it on the ends as a natural conditioner. -

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 7:17 AMWell, that makes soooo much more sense. Although, that doesn't look like what Basha is saying :-) -

Re: How often to 'poo or no'poo?
Tue, July 28, 2009 - 2:29 AMlol... I can see the confusion. CO = conditioner only... vs cocunt oil. I do use the coconut for the ends of my hair, but as its short, it winds up everywhere. I use conditioner only ( a non SLS) to wash w/ a ACV rinse. and baking soda every two weeks or so that I remember to do it. Not putting a ton of product in my hair so stripping it w/ BS isn't a requirement. =) -
