I suspect a lot of the color labeled as "semi" is actually a demi. I've used Clairol Natural Instincts, Redken Shades EQ, L'Oreal Color Spa and Color Gems, and while most (maybe all) of those are called semi-permanent, they all grow out on me with distinct roots, in other words, they don't nearly wash out over the 4-week period between colorings. I tend to think of the true Semis as Jazzing, Clairol Beautiful Browns, etc., other stains that don't use a developer. Am I correct in that?

ahhhh
ok i am a lic. cosmetologist and certified master colorist including color correction.

first off fiera IS A METALIC COLOR LINE IT IS NOT COMPATABLE WITH HENNA NOR PEROXIDE COLOR
~ some color lines use metalicsto create internal heat and process the color.
second any time you are doing a complete color change or changing lines you are doing a color correction, which is a long and delecate process
you are lucky, i am surprised you didn't fry your hair with the mixing you have been doing.

>the metalic product should be removed but here's your options

1) you can stop coloring grow it out and remove the old color in stages with haircuts

2) you can purchuse a "decolorizor and residue remover" they are usualy in powder form. you want to start with the gentlest mixture first, mix the powder with distilled water.
have someone help you apply this and watch it for you { you might want to go to a salon for this procedure. you can always ask for a consult find out what they use and i could tell you if that would be the best product for you. the best one on the market for professionals right now is SOLARIS, by PERMA, "MILK" will be too gentle you need the small envolpes from the SOLARIS line, not many salons carry Perma but any lic. stylist can purchuse it at a cosmo prof supply store. if you do go to a salon DO NOT let them talk you into removing your color with Bleach decolorizor or that it's the same procedure. It is not! and bleach and metalic do not mix well. depending on how dark the color was you were using, how long you've been using it and if you did your touchups properly by just appyling to the "root area"- new growth or pulling the color through to the ends everytime; it may take many applications to remove the color you should not do more then 5 applications at one time and let the hair rest for a week before you use aplly again. i had one client come to me that it took 2 months to remove the color she had been using.
once the old color is removed you can use any product line you'd like.

3) you can use a semi-permant haircolor; know this many lines say they have a semi perm line but it's really a demi perm. a true semi perm requires no mixing with the color . with each shampoo some color will wash out and it gradualy grows lighter usualy only lasting 2-4 weeks
this will only work if the semi color you choose is the same or darker then the color you're using now. if you have grey ~ semi does not cover grey hair.

again once the old color has been removed by haircuts you can change to any color line. remember hair only grows on average 1/2 inch a month.

whatever you chose remember to treat your hair to deep conditioning treatments especially after it was fried in with the test

also in the future if you're going to do a color test, chemical test on your hair the best way is to cut a few strands, that way you don't have uneeded damage.

good luck and if you have any other questions please leave me a message.

Hmm...how about this...get a bit of henna and do a colour test with it, just the way it describes on the above site...be absolutely sure that it is body art quality henna...I repeat...ONLY COMPLETELY NATURAL HENNA...see what kind of results you get and if it turns red like it's supposed to and not green, I'd say to go with a henna colour, just for a treatment...you can use real henna with other colours, but it's always, always imperative to test it out if you're not sure...I only use semi-permanent colours now, but I've also done a henna 'treatment', I guess you could say, a couple of times...it thickens my hair up and makes it stronger and if I could find a variety that would make my hair a bit more vibrant, I'd go with that alone...but my hair is on the dark side, anyhow...since semi-permanent colours, nor henna will lighten the hair, I use the semi to give it a bit more ooomph, y'know? *giggle*

Anyhow...do the test and see what happens...you might even get a colour you like well enough to make you give up regular colours forever...never know!

Oh...you can get different sample packs on the different henna varieties on the site...it really depends on the country of origin to what the colour of the henna is...and each batch is gonna be a bit different, too...it is a natural product...but check them out and get one that sounds close to what you want...

*Heck, don't be lazy, Bek*...here's the link for that page...that Punjabi Prime sounds lush...

Thanks Rebekah! I went to the salon today for a trim and my stylist did a PPD test for me and it fried the hair. I guess that means I would be wise to stick with Feria for the foreseeable future? I touch up about every 4 weeks, my hair is fine textured, a bit on the limp side but in good condition. I don't want to chance ruining good hair just for vanity sake but also hate being limited in my color choices.

Any thoughts on that?

If you go to the hennaforhair site and check out the E-book on how to henna your hair, it has a test you can do on hair harvested from your brush...from what I remember, you mix up some developer with something else in a bowl...(geez, the memory really starts to go when you get older)...then you put your hair in it and see how it reacts...I can link you to the page, but you'll have to check out the book...

Just look for the test for PPD's...it's close to the explanation for how to henna your hair, from what I remember...

I have been using Feria for years and as their color palette is shrinking, I'm looking at other brands. I color myself, am not a stylist and switched from the drug store kit to strictly the Feria Professional 25 volume developer and Classic Salon color 2 weeks ago. (Had been mixing the drug store colors and pro colors together with the pro developer for 3 months prior.)

At some point Feria was or still may be metallic-based and that's the info I'm looking for. At the salon where I get my hair cut there are differing opinions about the content. The L'Oreal website FAQ says their products are compatible with others and I'm posting the link:

Here also is the pro hair color info:
