Hair Ornament Troubles

topic posted Mon, April 14, 2008 - 7:49 AM by  Chelle
When doing my do, I've encountered several problems that I hope you ladies have some fine ideas to solve them (or at least encouragement :) ).

For my updo I usually do something rather simple, say a ponytail, or tight pigtail buns, etc. I like to let the ornaments do most of the talking. I want my updo tight, and to be able to withstand the weight of a thousand kuchi pendants, so I tug and tug and apply copious amounts of stay-in-place-or-face-my-wrath product. Fantastic! It'll hold up to an atomic bomb!

Then I go to stick in my ornaments. And they will not go in. There is much pain and agony in trying to force them in, and many brave hair strands are lost.

I say to myself, "Ok, too much hair product, and too tight." So I leave some out, and leave it a bit loser. Still happens.

OK, I'll make it ridiculously loose. It goes through a Bit easier, but the weight of all of the ornaments drags the hair out of the updo.

Is there a secret here that I seem to be missing? I can't even hardly place a single chopstick through my ponytail at the base.

Do you have a photo of what you do that isn't working so we can see?

Are the ornaments are too heavy? Or is getting them adhered to the hair a painful process? Sounds like your complaint is the latter....

maybe you need a different kind of attachment mechanism?
do you have pretty thick hair? i've got a hair thickness issue that makes sticking stuff in/on my hair a pretty hurty process at times =p
maybe you could modify your ornaments and make them into clips or put them on claw clamps or something like that?

a picture woudl be cool so we could see exactly what you mean :)

It is quite possible that your ornaments are too blunt to slide through your hair.
They do not have to come to a knifes blade end, but if you have thick hair, they do need to come to some sort of point.
Which means you do have to be a little more on the careful side not to stab your scalp, but the smaller the starting point the easier it will slide through.

        To answer eveyone's questions:

The ornaments are not too many, nor are they incredibly heavy. They just hurt to put in.

Yes I do have semi-thick hair, I try and put serum or gloss through it so it'll smooth down and slide easier.

The main thing I have problems with is sticking my huge flowers through, and they are about 3 mm around at the end. That may be the cause.

I'll see what I can do about getting pictures, there are a few in my albums, but the lighting conditions make it hard to see all of it.

Let me revise that. I have a cowrie fall that is over a foot in length going down two sides. That's pretty heavy. I don't use anything to poke that in though. I drape it over my pony tail and let the bobby pinning begin.

I'm a chop stick junkie, and I have to agree with the previous post, when the end of the stick is too blunt it's hard to get it thru and it is uncomfortable. I think you just need to have a stick with a "pointier" end. If your ornaments are on wooden sticks, you can taper the end of the stick with an emery board or sandpaper, like sharpening a pencil.

Uwah! You just gave me fabulous ideas. I used to carve things out of sticks I found in the backyard as a kid.

I could totally make my own stuff with small drill bits and such! Oooo! I'm going to do that this evening.

Another thing you might try with hair sticks is waxing them...just take a colorless candle and rub it over the stick...wipe off any excess and it should slide thru much more easily...

For the flowers...maybe remove the main part that you usually try to push thru your hair and thread a piece of florists wire thru it...something that you can bend and will have enough extra to pin in place...

Okay...for the cowries...I always end up putting my hair falls on metal free elastics...that way, I can just wrap them around to hold the ponytail base and you end your need to try to keep something so heavy in place...

                Hope it helps...

It sounds like your flowers are the issue, and it sounds like you're just trying to stick the [thick] stems straight into your hair, correct? If this is so, then instead I would advise popping the heads of the flowers *completely* off the stems & hot glueing a hair pin (like what ballerinas use) to the base of the flower. Will be a lot easier to attach. And if you need extra stability once they're in, then cross the hair pin at 90-degrees with a bobby pin to hold it down.

you might also wrap and glue some florist or beading wire around the base of the flower and stick it through and bend it, being careful of placement, so as not to stab yourself in the head.

I never stick flowers in my hair - it hurts! When you clip the stems, do you find those rough wires inside? Those tend to break my hair off. I always make my own flower ornaments. I'll be offering them soon on my site. For now I just have really huge headdresses for sale, but I hope to put some of the smaller ornaments on soon - www.thegypsykiss.com . Otherwise, just glue a flower to a clip! Clips are meant to be put in your hair, and to stay there.

For me, I tend to make my updos semi loose, and then tighten them up by adding sticks and things until the slack is taken up. I usually use a gloss/hair polish in the process of putting up the hair, because I have a lot of fly aways around my face. And I also wax/oil the ends of hair sticks as needed so they slip in. I tend to go for pretty simple, 1 or 2 pony tails or buns, and pile on the stuff from there. Sticks/ornaments that grab or pull get immediate sanding, pairing or waxing. Big flowers I put on bobby pins or hair clips, because the stems usually pull my hair or I poke myself with them. :P

But anything sticky, like gel or hair spray gets left till after the ornaments go in. Otherwise it grips and yanks. And I tend to just put the hold it in place product on the hair only areas if I can.

I agree w/ Soseneda-make it a bit loose first. I can get my hair so tight that hairpins won't go in!

Instead of serums, try an apple cider vinegar rinse after you shampoo, before you condition. It will make your hair shiny and manageable and remove any buildup from your hair products. Mix acv w/ water and pour it on. I rinse the vinegar out after a minute so there's no vinegar smell later. Also, a flexible hold hairspray might be helpful.

      Good Luck!!!

i think you might also need to wriggle things in gradually rather than just slideing them throuhg, it might help?

if you wear a headband, you can find ways to attach your flowers to that instead. or hot-glue them to the undecorated hair clips that they sell at JoAnn's.

i have no luck with chopsticks myself... they always want to fly out or tilt the wrong way.
