I have started doing my hair in the vinatge rock a billy pony tail style. I am looking for something to hold my hair that wont make it look greasy tor sticky. I hate hairspray cuz it smells and I hate gel cuz it makes my hair sticky--any products about there that are good for this?

    Aaaah a subject dear to my heart.

    A lot of people I know will use Lottabody to set their hair.

    Have you thought of a good oldfashioned pomade?

    I do use hairspray but Im like you - I dont like the smell.

    If in doubt and you need rolls to hide, then back comb at the base, lots of bobby pins and a light spritz of something to hold it.

    We used to use egg whites to spike our hair. Comb it in, get it in place, blow dry. I like Freeze gel and Freeze spray better though. Since I'm allegic to hairspray, I tend to go for the gel. My hairdresser said, "Bake it" (with the blow dryer) that way it stays and is not sticky. Mya not be so good for your hair, but it works. I just do a good conditioning after I abuse the hair.

        Greasy looking hair that comes after using a product... does that mean you have fine hair?? I have very fine hair and find that if I use anything too heavy (ie pomade) I just end up looking unwashed. I like the Sammy products in particular their curl cream. Its a light sunny smelling creame that tames my fly aways and keeps stuff in place. It is NOT a mousse or gel so the hold is pretty loose and its difficult to find. I have seen it consistently at some drug stores. For a hair spritz, I like the Treseme line. They have an "ultra hold" spritz in a white bottle that smells nice and holds like a damn vice but still looks au naturale enough. I use that when I do any kind of up do to keep everything in its place. Hope that helped.

          I have super fine hair and thin. So any product I put in makes my hair look greasy.

            I have the same type of hair and just spritz lightly with a hairspray that I can stand the smell of.

            Have you thought of using hair tongs to curl it before you put it up?

              If pomades (styling cremes, waxes, etc.) are making your hair look greasy, it means you're either (a) using too much or (b) not applying it correctly.

              Since you mention that you are wearing your hair in a pony, what I would do is:

              * Take a pea-sized amount of a pomade. I personally like Aveda's anti-humectant pomade. Smells FAB!
              * Rub the pomade between both hands vigorously. The rubbing will generate heat and emulsify (melt) the product.
              * Starting at the ends of your hair in the back, start finger-combing the product through tresses. Re-rub your hands together as the product starts to leave your fingers.
              * Work your way up towards the outer/top layers of your hair. The idea is to get a small amount of this product to smooth the strands, keep frizzies at bay, and keep those annoying little wispy flyaways around our faces from sticking out and ruining an otherwise smooth do.

              Now, brush or comb your hair into your fab pony.
