sequins are always a good start. They're easy to stitch or glue and you can coat like fish scales or make designs out of them.

I've used plain bandanas as a base for head bands. All you have to do is fold it to the width you want it and tack it into place. It's easy to add anything you want. They are usually 100% cotton so it won't stretch so much. It also has built in ties! For cabaret...you may wanna look at the places already mentioned above(little mall shops). You may be able to find something already put together and you can save yourself the headache! :)

I LOVE headbands... so, here's where I find ones I like...

-Claire's / the Icing ... talk about all sizes and widths! WOW!!!!! I am NEVER disappointed by this place!!!

-Sally Beauty Supply (if you have those in your area)

-Wal-Mart (believe it or not)

And when all else fails, I make my own. Out of wide ELASTIC. That's for the bendy loose kind though. Not the stiff kind.

How to add things to them?

-Hot glue
-Wire
-Staples
-Craft glue (like CRAZY GLUE... that really works for smaller pieces and rhinestones, etc)
-Sew (if the headband is fabric based)

... or you can glue fabric to a headband, and sew pieces to that fabric.

Hope that helped a little :)

Hello Miss,

I built up. The first thing I made was a hairband (stretchy) with a headpiece sewn on top of it. I added yarns as well and cowrie falls, but it was a bit of a problem, since it was so heavy that it kept on falling down when I did a backbend. (I should have added the combs as well, but I didn't think of that at the time) so I changed my working method, and I just added things to my hair, all added seperately.

Since I have short hair as well isn't really helpful but now I have a pretty solid system. The yarns and cowry falls I attach seperately at the back of my head in a big knot, by using lots of hairclips. Then I add a hairpiece, to make my hair look a bit longer. then I add an armlet, that has some dangly cowry falls hanging down (one like the one you were wearing in the Joogleberry), then I add bits of pieces that I collected since I started, dangly bits that I made or bought from Sirik.com or other ebay stores.

I bought some flowers as well, and attached some combs to them, making sure that the flower is at the top of the comb, so I can slide them into the big knot at the back of my head, so they fit right around the knot.

Now the problem with this all was: there was nothing in the front, really. So I made another piece, which is a two inch felt strip, with some yarns attached to them that I knot behind my head. on the felt strip I attached a homemade beaded disc, also using felt as a base and on the other side I attached one of those half circle kuchi earrings. This headband is a bit more on the front of my head, well at the top, so you can see it from the front a bit more.

Hope this all makes sense, just some ideas that might help you for creating your headpiece. good luck!! see you next week xx

I use a piece of non-stretchy fabric as a base for my embellishments and then attatch a piece of 3/4 inch elastic waist band (my prefered color is black) to the back of it. You don't have the issue of having ties that might come un-done or have to be tied too tightly and cut off the blood flow to your head. ;)
As with all headgear, just secure it with bobby pins.

I made a couple by buying those cheap stretchy headbands and cutting them into thirds. I used a third of that as the bottom section, and made the rest out of felt covered with my 'pretty fabric' (I didn't think the fabric itself would hold up). Works great, no ties, and clings well.

I made about a 2 inch wide band out of felt and decorated it with cool stuff. I used cotton ties that also don't stretch. But I hand stitched some combs to the underside so that it would stay secure to my head and hold the heavy decorations, even if the ties come undone.

the very first one i made, i used just a basic black stretchy headband, about 3 in. wide or so....i cut it and added ties to the ends. the only problem with this is that sewing decorations on was a problem because of the stretchy material.

i then made a second one out of cheap black non stretch material with ties and it worked better as far as decorating it, except that the stretch in the first one helped keep in on better.
so the non stretch one i have to tie kind of tight.

when i get around to making another one i will use the non stretch material for the base band and then use a stretch material for the ties. i think that may work best.

Hi all - i'm interested to know... Those of you girlies who have made your own/embellished an existing hair band (aka. alice band) to create a head-dress, what type did you use and how did you get on. it looks from pictures as though people add flowers/jewellery/hair falls etc. to a regular wide hair band. Are there any tips for what to add/how to add it and what looks good?

thanks!!!
