I just posted in the henna thread & it reminded me, one of my students uses indigo to get her black hair color - I believe she henna's it first or maybe I'm misremembering. But if you want black hair it's worth checking out, I'm sure it's better for your head than chemical dyes -

I've done indigo over henna and I love it. It does fade over time, whereas henna really doesn't in my experience. I've been hennaing my hair for over a year now and a couple months ago I put in a couple streaks in front with the indigo.

Now the indigo has faded so that it's not so much black but more of a deep cherry chocolate color.

The texture of the indigo is not the same as henna and can be a bit tricky to work with. It's kind of gritty and you have to really work at it to work it in good. Thankfully, it exhausts within an hour so I'm done in an hour with the indigo instead of the 4 or more hours I like to leave henna in. :)

Here's pics of my hair freshly henna'd and with my indigo streak freshly done.

Sa-weet. Putting my order in today.

Outta curiosity, what is your natural color or what was the base color when you put the henna on?

I did before and after pics the first time I hennaed my hair. Here was the before:

        It's a medium brown, I guess.

I've been using the "Punjabi Prime" henna that they have. I mix it up the night before, put it all on, saran wrap my head and add a towel for heat and then leave it for as long as I can stand. 4-6 hours.

Lovely color! I am takig the henna plunge soon, that chemical crap is really starting to do a job on my hair, and I like the indigo stripes.

      PS.
      Kitty is soooo snorgleable! Squee!

Thank you! I hope you love henna as much as I do. I was having my hair cut and I told her about the henna and that it leaves my hair so healthy. She asked me how long I'd been doing it and when was the last time I did it and said "Well, you're not kidding about it leaving your hair healthy."

And, the kitty is a spoiled rotten brat but I love her so so much. :p

Oh man, I LOVE the way that indigo looks over the henna. I might have to add some low lights in my hair with indigo but I think I may need a trained professional!

I've been hennaing my hair for the last three months (due for another treatment soon) and my hair is in the most amazing condition its ever been in. My hair has always been pretty hardy so I used to color it about every three weeks (usually a different color) and my hair never looked ill-used or bad. But then I chucked the perm color and started using henna and my hair is the shiniest, softest, silkiest, light-reflectingist (my new word!) it has ever been. I get compliments all the time, usually "Your hair is GORGEOUS, what do you use?" People never believe me when I tell them its just henna and good shampoo and conditioner. I get looks of disbelief when I tell them I don't use any shiners or synthetic products!

That is really cool Kianni! Thanks for posting the pix.
My student's hair does look natural, that's why I was so surprised when she told me (due to schedule constraints I had to do her private lesson with henna on my head!! -hey I couldn't help it!). Turns out she's no novice to the whole procedure :-)

Okay, so do you henna and indigo on the same day? My hair is already black from chemical dye, so in the future would I need to slap henna on the roots for 4 hours then indigo for an hour? Your hair does look great.

Yep. You are supposed to do it right away. They say that the longer you wait after, the less the indigo clings to your hair and you get less color payoff.

My hair was dyed black so when I started doing mine, I did half indigo and half henna and that kept it black with some red shine in the sun. Im going to start doing the indigo second though soon to get it darker with no red hopefully.

yeah all of us who die our hair chemically black want to know... did you strip your hair first or just start henning/indigo over the already chemically died stuff? I'd really love to stop chemcially doing my hair and I quiet for a few months but I can't let go of the black... I love it to much!!

            whats the process here chickies!

Basha... I hennaed my hair over the chemical residue of coloring my hair.

I dont have black hair, but DONT strip your hair.

that will just cause more crapola with it =)

You may have to play round with it for a while before you can get it to work exactly like you want!

lol no I have thrashed my hair pretty well... been dying it for what two or three years now and then reallized it was not getting super happy w/ me so I did the responsible thing and stripped it toned it to a natural colour and let it start growing out. I switched to a no poo routine- its not the best for the stripped hair but the grown hair seems to enjoy it...

but I gave up after some emotional trama and went back to the black because... well we won't get into the why's. But after this thread I'm going to try to switch to the henna indigo method. I put my order in yesterday- they said it wouldn't be a problem w/ the dye and all.

I'll be really interested to see- I think 100 gms is going to be fine for me (shaved in the back jaw lenght in the front) but they weren't sure so I bought 300 gms so I could have several mixes and be able to fudge my weights for the first one and make it how I wanted it! =)

I can't wait- should be here next week but then I have to wait for my time to do it. poopie but I couldn't wait to order it! lol... =) very excited!

Basha, dying your hair black damaged it??? Hmmm...I've dyed mine black for nearly 20 years with no problem. Maybe it depends on hair texture and oiliness/dryness? Interesting.

Trista I had a friend who uses the same stuff I do and she said the same thing- but she said I just wasn't using the right coctail really-

I went back to the garnie 210- blue black but I've got henna/indigo coming- will be interested to see how it goes. I can always chop it off and let it grow back out! or just go back to the box stuff or switch box stuff.

Also, another note to add about my experience with the Indigo. The instructions from hennaforhair.com mention adding a spoonful of salt if your hair may be a bit dye resistant.

I dunno if my hair is very dye resistant or not, but I did at a spoonful of salt just to be on the safe side. :)

That does not apply to the henna, as far as I know.

Kianni maybe you already do this but vinegar (I use apple cider vin.) is supposed to get the ph right for more henna-ness... I add it to my last rinse when I shampoo before henna application -

The only thing I've ever really done is mix my henna with lemon juice, let it sit overnight, and then put it on. I leave it on so long, I get a great stain, so I've never really worried about prepping my hair in any way.

I would much rather use henna than dyes, but I am worried about how cost effective it is. I have a ton of very thick (my ponytail has a diameter of about 2 inches) curly hair about mid back length. I'm just wondering how much I would need and how expensive it is per application and how often it needs to be reapplied. I've got a few grays and I'm not sure if I should just let it go gray. My natural color is red with gold/ copper streaks, but it hasn't been natural in six years. When I dye it I use two to three bottles, so right now I'm spending about $18 per application. I only color it about every three months, because I hate the idea of using so much chemical crap. I'd appreciate some opinions before I fork out the dough for henna. Thanks -Freya

Freya... it all depends on where you buy your henna!
I use a place called Puddletown that I found on ebay, but apparently they are now selling through another ebay store... they are also "local" to me in my own state. the "recipe" on hennaforhair.com called for 250-300 gm for mid length hair, and I found that to be SUPER DOOPER excessive. I would say for your hair 150-200 gm. I got away with 100 gm with a thinner mix the second time I did it. I liked the consistancy better and it went on easier, and I got better coverage.

Just remember to wear old clothes, put a sheet on the floor and get someone to help... LOL I dont have anyone to help, and I'm sure I would get better color if I did...

Its trial and error =) I havent had error yet tho... I love my hair!

    Wondering...

In your experience (this is a general Your...) Does it work better to mix the indigo WITH the henna to do streaks and the such? OR just use the indigo?

I need to do a re-touch on my henna soon, and wouldnt mind some chunky stuffs.... (I like hair color texture)

Mixing it together will get more muted results, from what I understand. For my streaks I did henna first, rinsed and then did indigo.
