Faux Eyelashes

topic posted Sun, March 18, 2007 - 4:32 PM by  *FD*
Hi. I'm just looking for a good source of decorative eyelashes online. Interested in colored lashes, pink, purple, blue, metallic, etc. I've googled a bit, but haven't found anything like what's available around Halloween. haha. I was just wondering if anyone here had some good recommendations. Thanks!

Try doing a search in this tribe. I know there have been several threads on eyelashes. I'm sure one or two of them have sources.

Well, I've ordered several pair from My Diva's Closet. Thanks for everyone's input!

      Oh I love these:
      gothiccastle.safeshopper.com/179....htm
And I even could find a site to but them at in the netherlands!

But while being on the topic: I haven't got real impressive lashes and mascara doesn't really seem to help, especially on the lower lashes. How many of you use fake eyelashes when performing? I was thinking that Ialways tought fake ones look to overdone, but maybe it's less and even great when being on stage?

I think false eyelashes on the band are great for on-stage. It's like lashes and liner all in one. But for close-up, I prefer the *individual* fake eyelashes. You know, those little clusters of lashes that you stick on separately? I think they look more natural.

Now, if only I could get them on straight! The left side always looks wonky!

Has anyone used a faux eyelash applicator? www.mydivascloset.com/faeyap.html

I really have problems putting on eyelashes. I'm wondering if I have to go to a makeup artist in order to be trained.

I find these applicator things to be pretty useless. Most people have trouble putting on false eyelashes because they are too long and they have not trimmed the lashes down to fit.

Use a pair of toenail clippers (clean ones!) to trim the plastic band at the top of the eyelashes. Trim from the inside edge for the longest lashes, trim from the outside edge for more discrete ones. Your band of eyelashes should go from the outer edge of the eye to just a little past center. Especially as your learn to put them on. If you have really long lashes, they will turn into two pair when you clip them.

After you clip them, wrap them around your little and ring fingers right at the base of the nail bed. The glue on them should stick, if not add a little more. Hold them here while you do your eye makeup (about 5-10 minutes). Pay attention and press them back down whenever they pop up.

Now take them off your fingers and hold each end. Bend the plastic strip around in the line and of the curve and work it back and forth like a little caterpillar. Do this on both. Put some eyelash glue on one, just run the strip through a drop of glue on the tip of the glue tube. Set the eyelashe down and wait about a minute for the glue to get tacky. You can not put on eyelashes with wet glue.

When the glue is tacky on the first, put glue on the second, and pick up the first to apply. Look down at your mirror and place the eyelashes on the eyelid. You have some wiggle room. And the glue won't show, so if you make a mess, no worries. I like to start at the outside edge and lay them down towards the inside. Some people like to go the other way. Use the non-brush end of a piant brush to slide them into place and to hold down the inner edge. This needs to be held in place for a few moments to make sure it doesn't pop up when you move your eyelid.

Now the other eyelash should be tacky and ready to put on. Search eyelashes on this tribe, there is a thread somewhere about putting these things on, with lots of advice and tips.

Thanks for the advice Soseneda! I think that was my problem all along. I never waited long enough for the glue to get tacky and put them on wet.

Regarding eyelash glue... I've only heard and never used this but has anyone used spirit gum or clear bindi glue instead of eyelash glue?

You can, but it has alcohol in it, and it can really make your eyes water as it dries near the eyes. That is why the white eyelash glue is used. It is water based, and it takes a while, but it doesn't make your eyes water.

I think the not-waiting-for-adequate-tackyness has been my issue with lashes. I *will* try them again this Saturday night.

Question though: Do you apply them on BARE eyelids? Or is it OK to put makeup on and then apply the lashes OVER the makeup? I was wondering if the makeup would cause the adhesive to not stick as well.

Either one is fine. Some people like to put them on first (before makeup) to make sure they have adequate time to get them in place, and because the adhesive works better for them. I like to put them on last if possible, because the eyeliner hides any mistakes of not getting the falsies close enough to your own lashline. I use DUO adhesive, and can't tell any difference with good adhesion between makeup and no makeup. They make a clear and dark formula, and they make latex and a latex free formula in both. Hands down the best eyelash glue on the market.

Great news! I'll try it after getting on all 3 layers of eyeliner (I use pencil, followed by gel, followed by powder). If I run into trouble, I'll just powder over the glue and nobody will know! Thanks!!

You clip the lashes? But what about clipping when you have lashes like these: gothiccastle.safeshopper.com/179....htm
Then I have no choice but to clip on the non feathery side.

Yep. With specialty lashes you just have to decide what is best in each case. Sometimes it is worth the extra hassle and discomfort to not clip them. Sometimes they just fall off when you do that. :)

I was told by a person where I get my pedicures that someone at that salon does lash extensions. I had no idea you could get lash extensions. Would that be a good idea and option to False Eyelashes?

I tried snipping a pair of lashes in half and used the smaller end just on the outer corners of my eyes. I did my 3 layers of eyeliner (pencil, gel, powder) and then tried to put the lashes on (of course, after waiting for the glue to become a little tacky). My issue...with all the eyeliner and stuff on (all black) I had a difficult time finding the right place to put them! I had to switch rooms, lights, mirrors, etc. in order to see where my lashline actually was!

I'm going to pick up another pair and try it again BEFORE my next gig except try one one a totally bare lid and one with just a little bit of eyeliner on, to see if it makes a difference. The good news is that once I got them on, YES, the DID stay on the entire night! Didn't come off until I used some cold cream to take off my makeup. YAY!!!

The timing of lash application is up to you. there are no eyelash police out there. Ive put lashes on first for years, you can see exactly where you are putting them, and they seem to stick better as well. I also use mascars on false eyelashes- sort of sticks all the layers together.

The trick for me is not only, clipping, using as little glue as possible and waiting for the glue to get tacky, but placing them on my actual lashes (not eyelids) at the lashline. Once they stick I press them back towards the skin on my eyelid to get it as close as possible. This way they have something to stick to (other than all the makeup on my lids) and they blend in better. Works like a charm every time - I've been dancing with false lashes for nearly 10 years now and have become a self-proclaimed master! I think I could even do it with my hands tied behind my back! LOL! : )

"I think I could even do it with my hands tied behind my back! LOL!"

      <green with envy>

So, Oh Mighty Mistress of Eyelashes.... when you apply yours, do you already have liner on? Or do you put the lashes on first and then apply liner and the rest of your makeup?? I'd LOVE to become more proficient at this too. I think I need to find the right "formula" for me. I will try the "push" back from base of lashes to lash line on eyelid and see if that helps. I think with all the eye liner I had on last week, I just saw a blob of black so my lashes and liner blurred together and was difficult for me to see exactly where I should place them. I'm just giving myself extra time getting ready to compensate for being an idiot with them!

I used to wear several pairs at once, and liked to put the eyeliner on last. That way I could disguise any serious goofs. To "fool the eye" if you will. There are also lashes for the lower lids- never tried them, so cant comment. I personaly like long spikey feathery thick lashes with a clear band. If you've never worn fake lashes, it takes practice to put them on sucessfully, and it takes practice WEARING them as they are heavy- your eyelids will think they are heavy. But they do make for dramatic eyes, and some activities scream for them.

Have fun and dont stick your eyelids together!

hmm... can you tell me why mine won't stick? I've tried waiting for hte glue to get tacky, I've tried less glue, more glue, sticking to the lid, sticking to hte lashes, etc.... seeing this post reminded me I wanted to try again, since I bought so many after Halloween. I fiddled with them for almost an hour....

Is your glue old? Or just not a good glue?

I personally can't get them to stick to my lashes, only to my lids. But it works great for other people. This really is a try it till you find what works best for you type of thing. Have you clipped them? If it is just the ends popping up they may be either too long for your eye or not rounded enough for your eye shape. You can train the lash band around your fingers, or paintbrush ends, or quarters. You can also work the lash band into a bend and make it more curvy.

Often the cheaper lashes have cheaper bands that don't want to shape and bend. Sad but true, they may just have to be clipped to fit the less curvy part of your eye.

Make sure your eyelids are clean and dry- no moisturizers either- clean and dry. More glue is not always a good idea, it just gets goopy, and smeary. Make sure the lash band is not too long for your eyelid- trim from the outer corner if needed. Apply a thin line to the lash band, let it dry a bit and get tacky. As the glue is drying, flex the band- using both hands, back and forth- making a wave action..Tilt your head back so you are looking down past your nose, and raise your eyebrows. Now start application of the lashes. Dont try to apply it too close to the inner corner of your eye- no farther in than your real lashes grow. I have better luck sticking to the eyelid skin than to my lashes. Once you touch the glued lash to your eyelid, hold it in place for a few moments, so the glue can set up better. Release, blink a few times, pat down the ends again. Do this several times. Once everything feels secure, then apply the rest of your make-up, and dont forget to use mascara. Make sure to get your natural lashes,as well, with each sweep of the brush. (helps glue everything together) The lashes will feel heavy for a while, and you will feel like you are peeking out from under a curtain, but you do get used to it. And the results are worth the effort- fabulous smokey eyes.

PS--- if you are using lashes that have been used before or messed around with, make sure you pick off all the old glue and that the lash band is as clean as you can get it. It is alot easier to work with a smooth band than a clumpy one. Good luck!

"when you apply yours, do you already have liner on? Or do you put the lashes on first and then apply liner and the rest of your makeup?"

I've done it both ways - but I usually do my eyeliner first, then go back and do litle more eyeliner after the lashes are dry to help blend everything. Make sure your using a good glue - I love DUO eyelash adhesive (waterproof-clear/white), it also comes in dark. And when I put it on my lashes I usually put a very thin line of glue on the edge and just a little bitty bit over the edge to the side that will be facing down. Pushing them back really helps and I cannot stress trimming them enough. My fave lashes right now that are inexpensive and convenient to get are from my local Sally's Beauty Supply - they are called Demi Pixies.Thicker and a bit spikey is how I normally like them - but I love to venture out with the feathers, jewels & metallics every now & then. To be really dramatic I like using them down below too.

There are also a few fiber mascaras out there that add fibers to your lashes to extend them like falsies
        www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml
haven't tried them, but they look cool.

Just keep practicing - find the right formula for you & don't be afraid to wear them out to a party or special ocassion! : )
