I've used it a couple of times, it works okay. It's a bit easier to work with than henna powder, and if the hay smell of straight henna annoys you then the Lush an be more pleasant. The main downside is that because it's in a block and exposed to air, it oxidizes and therefore often doesn't give as brilliant a colour as body-art-quality henna.

I've used Lush henna the past few times I've colored my hair. Here's my experience:

First, to address your question about Lush henna over dyed hair, I had been using store-bought box dye before I tried the Lush henna, and my hair didn't have any negative side effects when I switched.

I agree that the Lush bars do not result in as vibrant a color as body art quality henna (or store bought dye). For me that was actually a positive because I want to let my natural color come through and just color the grays. The Lush bar gave my grays kind of a coppery tone so they look like natural highlights, and the condition of my hair overall was definitely better after using the henna bar (softer, less flyways).

So far so good, right? Well, not exactly. Here's what I didn't like about the Lush henna. I used the Caca Marron bar. One of the ingredients is coffee grounds, and I've found that the smell is just too much for me to take. I feel like my hair smells like rancid coffee for about a week after I use it. It's nasty. Also, preparing the henna from their bar doesn't seem to save any time compared to making a mix with body art quality henna. To really get the consistency right with the Lush bar I've found I have to cut the amount I need off the bar and then chop that part up into very thin slices, almost like shavings from a chocolate bar. Then I put the shavings into a double boiler on the stove. As it begins to melt I start mixing in hot water. Once everything's melted I take it off the stove and add olive oil (otherwise it starts drying out before I've finished applying it to my hair). From there it's the same as any henna mix: apply it to my hair, wrap in plastic wrap and wash it out in 3 or 4 hours.

I've almost finished using the Lush bar I bought, and once it's gone I plan to find a good recipe on hennaforhair.com and start using body art quality henna instead. I tried the Lush bar thinking it would be easier, but it really isn't.

I used to work for lush and used to use Henna bars from there - they are a pain in the bum to use, and i know they keep it in a 'solid' form so that they store better and also no packaging is needed etc. But i know a lot of people who swear by the stuff!! I've seen people who use the Rouge version of their bar and have bright red hair and it looks amazing. I only ever used marron or brun. Now i use store bought (the new ten minute stuff) and its fine, although i'd rather not use chemical dyes, it covers my grey which henna no longer does!

I really recommend www.henna-boy.co.uk/ as i've bought lots of dye from there -and they mix indigo with henna to get the right balance for darkbrown to red - and it comes in a powder. It needs a bit of preparation though, but apart from that its really good high quality and good prices. They also do nice natural conditioners for hair too.

thanks for all the feedback! i think i am actually immune to the smell of rancid coffee, i smell like it every day from work, haha! I am interested in trying it but my natural hair color is much lighter than the color it is now and i was affraid that the color wouldnt come out even (ie brighter at the roots and darker everywhere else)

Actually, that's one of the things that the hennaforhair site recommends NOT doing...the coffee really doesn't do anything but make your hair smell bad and it can give you a screaming headache...just my opinion, but I think you'd be better off just using bulk powdered henna...it's all ready to mix and no additives that you don't know how you will react to...

As for the roots...what shade of red were you looking for? Henna colour is different, depending on what region it comes from and even different batches can have a subtle difference in colour...if you're looking for a darker red, you'd probably be alright if your chosen colour is dark...but if you're looking for a lighter shade, you might end up with a bit of a demarcation line...if it were me, I'd go with a darker henna...something closer to an auburn and you'd probably be okay...

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the headaches! I don't know if it's the smell of the coffee or if the caffeine absorbs into my scalp or what, but I've gotten a massive headache both times I used the Lush Caca Marron bar. I definitely plan to buy from the hennaforhair site next time and use a mix of 1/2 henna, 1/2 indigo to get the shade of brunette I want. I gave the Lush henna a chance and just wasn't impressed.

Ye, I'm not sure exactly why it does that, either...but pure henna actually will help get rid of a headache...so that coffee has gotta be doing something freaky...I think I'll just stick to drinking it...much better that way...;-)
