Some feedback for mixing Henna and Indigo

topic posted Fri, April 11, 2008 - 10:26 AM by  J
Ok so the topic on fading haircolor sort of inspired me to try out henna on my hair. Over a month ago i had my friend dye my medium brown hair to a light coppery auburn. I liked it for awhile but now I want to go back to a rich auburn brown. For this i was going to order some samples from hennaforhair.com and try some mixes on my hair from a bursh. I just wanted to get some feedback on how others have mixed inidgo and henna. any other suggestions for henna are greatly appreciated!

Hey there! I started by dying my "dirty blond" hair red w/ just straight henna. After awhile I wanted a darker red, so I started by mixing 1 part indigo to 3 parts henna. It was fine. I decided that I wanted to keep going darker until I got to a shade I really liked, so I just added a little more indigo each time. Right now I'm mixing 1 part henna to 1 part indigo and I think I've reached a color I want to stick w/ for awhile. There's a whole lot of information in all the websites linked to hennaforhair if this doesn't help! Have fun!

I'm just recently doing the same myself. I want jet black, or what they're calling 'raven black' and I've also been to the HennaForHair site to check out their instructions. I've scanned and so far haven't found *exact* details and how to mix to get a certain degree of black, but I'm still looking. :) Since indigo is blue, I still don't quite understand how it gives you jet back by mixing with henna (whenever I mix the colors brown and blue, it doesn't really give me 'jet black'..hmm...), but I'm willing to test it on a bit of my hair before doing my whole head. They say that hanna and indigo are healthier for the hair than the salon hair coloring and since my hair is fragile I don't want to do a lot of that. (never done any kind of permanent hair color before)

While there are lots of personal variants with mixes and timings, the basic rule is:
mixed henna and indigo => red-brown to dark brown tones varying with mix ratio
henna first, indigo second => black

"mixed henna and indigo => red-brown to dark brown tones varying with mix ratio
henna first, indigo second => black"

I'm totally confused by that. Are you writing that as the steps to dying?

To break it down a bit...what is meant by 'mixed henna and indigo'? Do you mean henna and indigo that have both already been mixed together? And then applied as the first part of the dying? And then 'mix ratio', is that the same thing??

        What?? *_*

Ooops... so sorry to add to the confusion... yes, there are two ways of dying with henna plus indigo, and they give different results.

What I meant by mixed henna and indigo (for red-brown to dark brown) is:
          1. mix henna paste and allow it to stand until dye release.
          2. mix indigo paste.
          3. mix them together (what I refer to as mix ratio is whether you use equal amounts of each, or more henna or more indigo).
          4. apply to hair in one step.
          5. wash out after 2 to 4 hours.

What I meant by henna first, indigo second (for black) is:
          1. mix henna paste.
          2. apply to hair (before or after dye release - if before, then you'll have to leave it in a lot longer is all)
          3. wash out after 2 to 12 hours.
          4. dry hair.
          5. mix indigo paste.
          6. apply to hair.
          7. wash out after an hour or two.

I *hope* that's clearer... if not, I can do no better than send you back to hennaforhair.com - Catherine explains it well, I think, but you'll need to read a number of pages to get the picture.

Ah-HA!! Yes, that makes much more sense, thank you. LOL Yes, it's the later, the super black I'm going for. My hair is already dark brown to blackish.

So, and from what I understand from the HFH site too, is I will be just using henna that first time. I will be doing it on my own, (that's right, HFH, I don't have a 'helper'), so I want to make sure I have all my facts straight. I'm also looking for tips on how to change the smell, before during afterwards, whichever. Talkin' about henna though, I have no idea how indigo smells.

would this method work on blonde / dirty-blonde hair? in order to get a black / near-black color?
can i do that in one go or do i have to build up (make it brown one day, then a few days later, darker, than again, to make it black) ?

i've heard (but not sure about this one) that these "natural" mixes give a more natural shade of black or brown that artificial dyes. what i mean by that is, often artificial dyes make your hair one single color, rather than like in natural hair where sunlight can you slighlty varying shades on one head)
            is this true?

I'm getting ready to do this myself. I currently have dyed medium brown hair. I like keeping my hair dark brown, but I'm a little scared of doing a 50/50 mix of henna and indigo and it being too dark (which I've read happens sometimes). I was going to start with a 3:1 henna:indigo mix and adjust the ration of indigo until it's dark enough.

Does anyone have advice for applying this mix to already dark-ish hair? Is it easy to accidentally go too dark with the indigo?
