Hello all. Well, I have never in my life worn fake eyelashes, so I'm a little nervous about wearing them for the first time during a sweaty performance. So my question is this - have you ever had them come off once you were sweaty, or do they pretty much last the whole night?
I'll be using the cheap kind from a drugstore with the whole row attached, not the individual lashes kind, just because I don't have that kind of skill yet and I'd like to keep it simple for now. :) If possible I'd like to keep them on for the whole evening, because after the performance will be social dancing for the rest of the night. But this will be sweat city, and I really, really don't want to be dancing with someone and have a row of eyelashes falling onto my face.
Tips for making them last the night? Thanks :)

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 1:51 PMGet some surgical glue by DUO, they sell it at any MAC counter for $7. It's great!!! I've danced outdoors in Arizona with it and my lashes stay on. You apply a thin line of glue to the lash and wait about 30-40 seconds before applying it to your eyelid. I have yet to have any false eyelashes fall off using this stuff. -

Mon, August 28, 2006 - 9:38 AMMAC sells the surgical glue which is a little stronger than the eyelash glue, DUO has both. I've performed in both, but occasionally the corners of my eyelashes come up when using just the eyelash glue. I've never had that happen when using the surgical glue.....it's great for bindi's and eye corners too!!

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 1:52 PMI've never worn fake eyelashes myself, and this post has reminded to go buy some, so thank you! A few of the ladies in Mayurichaal wear fakers, and I have never heard any complaints about them coming off. Keep in mind we dance in 90 degree heat, in the middle of summer, outside, which is pretty much sweat city.

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 2:37 PMI have small but very round eyes. My fake one's have never fallen completely off, but I have had them lift off the inside and outside corners. No one could tell while I was dancing, but it sure made me feel like a dork - and I could think of nothing else while I was dancing. So much for my concentration! Most of my friends with 'normal' beautiful eye shapes don't seem to have the same problem. But then again, I am just learning how to wear them.... so maybe practice is the key. I think I also might try the glue mentioned above - thanks for the tip! -

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 2:41 PMLiz, you could also try trimming the lashes so the band is a bit shorter. They wouldn't go out as far but they'd be less likely to lift. Maybe get a couple individual lashes to fill in the ends but not have the band lifting up problem?

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 2:57 PMAlso when you buy fake lashes, the often need a bit of braking in and trimming, unless you have pretty straight big eyes. To break them in bend the edge a bit, emphasizing the curve. You don't need to squish them, just give them a deeper curve all along the line so that they will hug the eyelid.
Then try them on and see where to trim them. Usually for dancing I like to trim mine just on the inside of center. I try them on, find the center, and allow three more lash clumps to make sure the end sticks down. You may prefer them longer or shorter, depending on what kind of look you like. Another tip is to take a couple of lash clumps off the inside end of the line, so that it can be encircled in glue when glued down and hence hold better. Have a careful look at how yours are made before trying this. The hand tied ones will slip right off, and it works great. Some of the new ones coming out seem to be fused to the edge, and trying to pull the clump off just tears up the lash.
Also, when you store the lashes, do everything you can to maintain the right curve. If the box they came in didn't fit your curve, get creative. Around the edge of quarters is a favorite in the theater, as are pill bottles and other round thingies. I keep mine on a pill bottle, all lined up with a little scrap of fabric over the top to keep the dust off. When I need to transport them, I stick them in a bigger bottle (I think it is from olives?), and glue the caps together with chewing gum. :) Someday I will just superglue them together or something more permanent and hygenic I am sure.

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 11:50 PMI luuurve fake lashes. Zero to FAST in two seconds.
I use the cheapos- the only differences are in materials and in how many uses you can excpet from them. That said, the best tip I can offer is to put them on *before* the rest of your makeup.. that way, if you fail, just pull them off and start over with no harm done. I've also noticed that a tiny extra dab on each end (espically the inner corner end), will work wonders in keeping them on all night.

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Sat, August 26, 2006 - 2:25 PMSince we're on the topic of false lashes. could someone tell me how to put on the individual lashes. I will use the strips for now, until I build up false eyelash skills. -

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Sat, August 26, 2006 - 9:52 PMI just performed for the first time last night wearing individual lashes, and I LOVE them! It was very windy and I could feel them blowing in the breeze, but they stayed put. I even showered with them on and only lost a couple of clusters, which were easy to replace. I've tried the strip kind before, but I could not get them to stay on to save my life.
The individual lashes are actually little clusters of lashes, and they're glued onto your natural lashes instead of your eyelid using a special (clear) adhesive. Of course, that means you have to be very careful removing them because you'd pull out your own lashes if you try to pull them off.
I just picked up a cluster with my tweezers, dipped the knot into the glue I had poured into the tray, then set it in place on top of my lashes. After a few seconds it was set, and I moved on to the next cluster. I started at the center of my eye, and worked back and forth from there. Then I went back and added a few extra clusters to the outer corners for dramatic effect. -

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Sun, August 27, 2006 - 8:26 PMWow, thanks everyone for the replies! I especially love the tip about adding an extra drop of glue on each end.
But I'm assuming you do this before putting them on, so you just sort of have extra glue on the ends? I can't imagine you just squeeze from the tube right over your eye (!) once the lashes are already on, but since that wasn't specified, would someone clarify this just so it's clear for anyone who decides to try it? Thanks again! -

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Mon, August 28, 2006 - 6:28 AMUsually I add a bit more to the end before putting on. If I am having a time, and the things just won't stay where I put them, then I will put some glue on an orange stick or a toothpick and use that to carefully put some glue on top of the lashes already on my eye. As usual, just be careful with sharp pokey sticks near your eyes. :)

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Wed, August 30, 2006 - 2:27 AMI've heard from everyone that it's easier to try the strip lashes before you try the individual ones. But for me, I have never successfully been able to apply the strib lashes, but the FIRST time I tried individual lashes, I got it down perfectly. So.. in MY humble opinion try the individual ones first!

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Fri, September 1, 2006 - 7:19 PMI've found that rather than trying to squeeze adhesive from the tube onto the lashes, it is MUCH easier to squeeze a bit of it out into a blob, and then dip the edge of the lashes in. -

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Sat, September 2, 2006 - 7:37 AManother fun thing to do with lashes is to cut a strip into about 1/2" pieces, and use one piece on each lid just at the corners. it is easy to put on and really enhances the outer corner of your eyes, kind of a gentle cat eye effect. and then just use some eyeliner on the lid to blend the line of the little section of fake lashes. -

Re: Fake Eyelashes for performance
Mon, September 11, 2006 - 11:42 AMya! this is a great tip becuase you then can make your lashes last longer. they are less likely to come up at the edges because they are shorter and you can get more use out of a set. These things get damned expensive!!
