Shampoo questions

I've heard to avoid shampoos with SLS, so I started reading ingredients. But now I have more questions.

SLS = Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, yes? If I have this wrong, my other questions may not matter.

What about Sodium LaurETH sulfate? Same thing or somthing different?
What about Disodium Lauryl Sulfate?
What about Aluminum Lauryl Sulfate?

I had some time to kill so went wandering through the shampoo aisle of the local CVS. I don't know if the whole concoction is a problem, or if it's the sodium or if it's the lauryl sulfate… I just don't know.

haha...ye, they're pretty much all the same thing, with slight differences...it's the 'sulfate' part of it that's the tip-off...cuz if you really consider the alternative methods...

No 'poo...baking soda is sodium bicarbonate...
Natural shampoo bars that have a base of caustic soda/lye...you've got sodium hydroxide...

Not really sure of what the base is in 'no SLS' shampoos, since I've not used a bottled version...but just keep that 'sulfate' in mind if you're looking for an alternative and steer clear...sulfates are simply surfactants or detergents and when I think of those, I think of laundry detergent...and you wouldn't want to use those on your hair!!! 8-O

It's unbelievable to me how many "salon brands" use SLS – or the other sulfates.

And don't get me started on the ones that say they're a "natural alternative" – that's where the Disodium lauryl sulfate came in.

The thing that is not good about the above-listed ones is the sulfate part of it, so since yours does not contain a sulfate in any form, I would assume that it would be a good/better alternative to other shampoos. Found this after a quick search online:

" Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, is a mild surfactant mixture for cosmetic use. It is EO-free and Alkyl Sulfate free with excellent flash foam, therefore it is suitable for the formulation of alternative shampoos, showers and baths." www.fitzchem.com/cgi-bin/ft.cgi It is , however, a synthetic chemical. So if you're going for an "all-natural" product, it would not fit the bill.

Interesting list along those lines, btw: allnaturalbeauty.us/syntheti...ients.htm

I'd always wondered what the deal is with SLS - I've heard it spoken of in tones of hatred but never really understood why. Having said that I have twice had to use several washes with washing up liquid to get stuff out my hair (nit oil anyone?) so I can't complain about surfactants in my shampoo lol...

*giggle*...well, I hate to say it, but if Suave still made the kids Cherry Blast shampoo, I'd be saying the hell with all the rest...it always seemed to work really well on my hair, but the part I loved was that it smelled like warm, fresh cherry pie...mmmmm...I looooves some cherry pie!

I shudder when I think of some of the things I've used on my hair in the past...but I think the worst instance I had was actually trying olive oil on my hair as a treatment...I ended up using half a bottle of shampoo on my hair to get that out...might as well have dunked my head in a bucket of motor oil...blech!!!

Oddly, one of the best things I've ever done to my hair was a month or so ago I put 2 or 3 drops of cedarwood oil on my scalp and rubbed it in as best I could. I had gotten a mild sunburn and was afraid of letting it get worse, because scalp sunburns are the worst…

For the week or two that treatment lasted, my hair was full and manageable and I appeared to lose the least amount ever. You'd think I'd be smart and have a regular routine of doing that… but I don't.

aloevera based shampoos usually don't contain SLS

SLS is added because the consumer has come to believe the bigger the lather the better it works and no lather = bad. it is simply not true

it isn't so much if SLS is in shampoo but how much... there are many good quality shampoos that have small amounts of SLS and don't have damaging effects on the hair

however if you want to go SLS free there are many products to chose from including salon professional products. ~ just remember if you make the switch and keep adding more product because you waiting for it to lather it's not going to happen. also these products tend to be more concentrated so you want to use 1/2 to 1/4 the amount you used of your old shampoo or your hair will be dull and oilier faster some clients even complian of feeling a residu on their hair till they figured out the right amount.

I found a salon shampoo/conditioner that was claimed as "sulfate free." It was from the Sexy Hair line, called Healthy Sexy Hair. The shampoo was called chocolate soy milk shampoo and smelled like the toys and dolls I'd get as a child that had "chocolate scent." It made me happy every time I smelled it! Anyways, I digress...the shampoo did not contain sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. As for the other stuff mentioned on this post, I'm not sure. I didn't read the label that closely. The shampoo seemed to lather just fine, though, if anyone's worried about that. I know that's not what makes your hair clean, but it just makes some people feel warm and fuzzy inside to have all that white foam on our heads!
