Okay, normally I employ the talents of my sister to help me with my hair when I do a performance, but soon it will be a different situation. I'm about to go off and do my own performances in which my sisters services cannot be attained. I have asked her to show me, but how can I see what she's doing back there, even with a mirror? ;-p So, I ask you ladies: How do you gals make your hair buns? Any good tips or even tutorials that you know of that can help me out?
I really like these side ones from loverly Samantha:

Now, I know we all can't make Sammy buns, but a good bun recipe would be awesome! ;-p
Thanx!

Re: BUNS!
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 1:06 PMHas anyone with shorter hair tried doing sock buns? The girl in the video keeps complaining about how little hair she has, but it appears to be at least armpit-length and not very layered, so I guess everything's relative... mine is very layered with the bottom at my collarbone, but it looks like a third of what she's got! Does this look like it would work with my kind of hair length? -

Re: BUNS!
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 1:57 PMMy hair is shoulder-length & I use them all the time. Yours should be fine. As long as your hair is long enough to pull into a ponytail & then wrap over the sock-bun and secure with a hair tie, then it's long enough to use this technique. The nice thing about using a sock (instead of, say, those foam things you buy at a beauty supply store) is that you can cut some length off of the ankle part of the sock if you find it's too big/thick for you to wrap your hair around it & secure.

Mon, May 26, 2008 - 7:25 PMI use these a lot for several different looks. My hair is baby fine and they work great for me. -

Re: BUNS!
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 4:48 AMI have fine hair, but a lot of it so it works with my hair ok. A troupe mate of mine told me the last time I did my sock buns (I did it in a hurry and it didn't look as good as it could have) told me that I needed to get some sort of prescription from the doctor to make my "sparse" hair grow in....because I was loosing so much of my hair! Hey! I was having a bad hair day and didn't do it very carefully. Sheesh...she's always doing stuff like that to people.
Go for your buns......I'm sure they will look great, even if you have a bad hair day! hehehe

Re: BUNS!
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 9:12 AMI'm wearing one right now, as a matter of fact. Makes for a GREAT hairdo for work when I don't wanna mess with my hair & it's not cooperating with me at all. 2 rubber bands, 3 hair pins and about 2 minutes of time...and voila! Much better than the ponytail. And you can tie a long pretty sash around it & people think you've spent gobs of time on it!

Re: BUNS!
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 5:40 AMyou could get something like this
www.hbbb.com.au/estore/product.php
i have something else, i can't seem to remember the name. bought it a few years back in an accessories store (claire's i think)
it's made out of rubber or something similar
img296.imageshack.us/my.php
they come in several sizes and colors, and so easy to use!
you stick the end of your hair in the slit, roll it wrapping your hair around it, up to your head, then snap it shut, and voila! :)
you could probably make your own based on this model.. -

Mon, May 19, 2008 - 8:03 PMHi all!
I just bought foam bun helpers at Sally Beauty Supply for $2. They are pretty easy to use. They work the same as the sock. They were in the section with the hair pieces.

Re: BUNS!
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 6:31 AMI always put my hair up wet. If you have thick, wavy hair, this works great. As it dries through the day, it naturally holds well, with out using *tons* of gel or spray.

Re: BUNS!
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 6:13 PMI would also recommend yarn ponytails. Yarn makes great buns - they're easy to pin and stay in place better than hair! If you just mix them with your hair, it'll help hold the style and make the buns fuller. Tie yarn strings about your hair's length (or longer if you want) around a rubber band a few at a time, until you like how it looks. Then use the rubber band like normal to make ponies where you'd want the buns. Then swirl the hair around like you would do for any bun. You could also braid the yarn for braided buns, or do that cool rope thingy if you know how to, for rope buns. Somehow that doesn't sound so pretty- rope buns - but take it from me, it is. LOL Or you could also just use a premade headpiece - shameless plug here, but hey, I love my own work!

Re: BUNS!
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 8:22 AMI make my own buns and braids just because I love exotic hair , and I'm lazy ....and usually rushed before performances due to a horde of children ...here is a slightly entertaining video of me trying to get ready with my 16yro bugging me ...but my (fake) hair is great heh ... I'm teaching a workshop this weekend on making hairpieces to our local dancers

Re: BUNS!
Thu, June 26, 2008 - 1:03 PMUm...I feel kind of like I did when I was 6 and trying to get Princess Leia hair. Do you pull your hair into a ponytail first and wind the rolled sock around the base? I'm not clear on "roll into donut shape"; roll it lengthwise into a "sausage" and then form the sausage into a circle (donut)? I'm not clear on the "place donut shape over hair and pread hair around donut shape"...
Help...my imagination is taking this to all kinds of demented places...

Re: BUNS!
Thu, June 26, 2008 - 1:16 PMNo not like a sausage. Start at the calf end of the sock and roll it up like you would if you were rolling it down your leg you end up with the sock looking like a trampoline with a hole in it. Put your hair up in ponies then pull thru the hole in the sock. It helps if your sock is kinda like your hair in color. -

Re: BUNS!
Thu, June 26, 2008 - 8:33 PMthe fastest way to do it is with a helper...
cut toe... put sock on an arm of helper... roll sock down ( I usually go top of sock to botton as the toe is tighter and makes it more stable by putting pressure on the outside)
it looks... well... like a doughnut... there relaly isn't any other way to describe it more accurately! -

Mon, June 30, 2008 - 10:53 AMI use a small scrunchie instead of a sock (never got the sock thing to work, dunno why). But yes - this is the trick!
