I was asked recently to bring a really great bloody mary red eye shadow I have to share with a few other models in a fashion show I am going to be in. I know of the whole not sharing make-up using the same applicators and all of that so this is what has me a little concerned but the pressure is there to share and make the run way show more "made up. " So, what do you guys think? Do you share your make-up and find that noone catches any eye infections this way? Or do you play it safe rather than sorry?
Thankz for all your posts!

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:21 AMMy mother is a germ-a-phobe. I have 3 sisters and she strongly advised us to never share make-up. We even all had our own brushes with our names written on them that we weren't supposed to share. I tell you this so that you can factor it into my response.
:)
I have gotten sick from my daughter and I sharing a tube of toothpaste, so you could probably get sick if you were sharing eye makeup with someone who is sick.
What about putting yours on before you leave the house. Then take your bloody mary red for the others to use. If you feel weird after, you can just toss it out when you get home.
Good luck with your dilemma.

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:30 AMWhat you can do is get a little spray bottle (fine mist) and fill it with alcohol. Get at LEAST 91%, 99% is better. Between each person (and certainly before you use it again) mist the eyeshadow. Then buy a pack of disposable eyeshadow wands (from any drug store) so that each girl has her own.
You can share safely. Just make sure you are being safe!! You can get pink eye, and herpes, and all sorts of gross things you dont want in your eyes!! -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:31 AMI wanted to elaborate a bit... the 99% is better because it has less water. It will disinfect and evaporate quickly so it will not effect the quality of your shadow. I use 91 and the quality is still fine, it just evaporates a little slower. Standard rubbing alcohol is 70%.

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:35 AMI am all for sharing with my roommate who happens to be my best friend... or my mom... good girlfriends at best.
But a whole group? I know it's just eyeshadow... buuuut there is something to be said about not being to cheap and just buying your own... eyeshadow lasts for forever and unless it is pricey like MAC* (which IS worth the money if you can afford it)... there is zero need for that amount of sharing to be done.
I think it's a little tacky to just not buy your own if there are that many... but that is IMHO... I love make up... I buy my own.
Buuuut I love the alcohol mist idea... that sounds good if you MUST share.

I wouldn't , but if you absolutely have to.....
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:40 AM...you would have to "shave it" - take a sterilized bobby pin (sterelized by being lit with a lighter or dipped in alcohol), then scrape off a layer in ONE direction only ONCE then the next person may use the color and then immediately use the "shave" technique again to be ready for your own personal use....(to prevent
The only con to this is some powder shadows can break apart, especially if it's an older shadow.
*same technique can be used with lipsticks...

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:38 AMBacteria & fungus need moisture to live - so they usually doesn't survive very long in powdered makeup (ie eyeshawdow, which is why they have longer shelf lives than say lipstick or foundation). However, if you're still creeped out by the idea, then take your fingernail & scrape the top of the eyeshadow loose & put some on a paper plate or mirror or something for them to use. PLUS then they can use it "wet" by dipping their brush in water first - makes a more vibrant color/look out of the same eyeshadow.
SIDE NOTE -- where did you get this fabulous shade? I have such a hard time finding a good, true red eyeshadow b/c the pigments are usually safe to be around your eyes... -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:43 AM**the pigments are usually NOT safe, that is... -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:50 AMgood question, I finally got some 'decent' red at hot topic... it runs closer to pink/red than red itself, but its better than other stuff. Haven't tried it wet yet to see if it comes out a little more true.... the liner on the other hand stays true to colour....
where or where??? -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 12:46 PMThis is "Bloody Mary's Goth red eye shadow called "flame" which I ordered on-line from an ebay seller named blackcatcloset who sells loads of awesome stuff! I also got the white heat facial powder compact. They have some other awesome colors too like turquoise and purple. They have a metallic foundation which would be quite interesting for fantasy fusion bellydance. -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 1:00 PMThank you for all your posts! I'll spray it with the alcohol and dig a little out for the others to use on a paper plate. I have lots of applicators already they can use but if they want to use brushes they can get their own.
Thankz again

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 12:52 PMGo to your local make up counter and sweet talk the clerk into giving you a couple of disposable mascara wands.
When you get to the show, put a tissue down and lightly scrape the top of the eyeshadow with the mascara wand onto the tissue (thereby creating "eyeshadow powder"). That way, no sharing the main product, it won't harden the product like spraying alcohol directly onto the eyeshadow, and the girls can make it as bold as they want by using it with a dry applicator or one dipped in water (for a more concentrated color.)

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 10:37 AMWell...
I've shared a few times. But NOT with allot of ladies...
I'm just getting over Staph in my EYE so... I'm gonna say HELL NO....
Change aplicators for each person, and wipe the eyeshadow (if its not a loose powder) after each person uses it. If it is a powder, shake a touch out onto a piece of paper for each person. This will help with cross contamination...

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 7:15 PMhate to spoil the fun, but alcohol, any % is not a good antibacterial agent. Your best bet is the disposible wands, and no double dipping!

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 5:26 AMI would ask a make-up artist how they do it. Afterall, they don't buy a new eyeshadow for each client do they? -
-
Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 6:55 AMthe ones at department store counters often make you buy the stuff they use (not always though)
in theatre(at least in my experience), actors have to have a basic kit with their foundation, mascara, liner, and anything they use for corrective stage makeup, and the makeup designer's budget needs to include any specialty things- like a character eye shadow, or specific color lip stick- with costumes that stuff would go into stock, but i think the actor just keeps the makeup... -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 9:41 AMI am a cheap CHEAPPY cheap cheapness. Official name for me. And several other people I know. We are all kind of ANTI-germophobes. But if we don't know someone, we don't normally share food/make-up/couch-sleeping-quarters/clothes with them. They may have herpes, they may not give our clothes back, whatever.
So listen to the woman who recommended spritzing with high percentage alcohol. Scraping isn't really any more sanitary than not doing it at all, which has to do with some of the brush hairs going farther down than others and microscopic pictures are needed with super-zoom and bacteria dyed funny colors.
It's better to kill the germs than to hope you remove them by scooching them off the palette and on to . . .where? in the air? on your clothes or exposed skin? possibly up one's nose?

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 10:15 AMAt the dept makeup counters, makeup stores all do basically what Treja said at the beginning the alcohol technique. I know when I worked with makeup we also would take a piece of clear packers tape, place it over the eyeshadow rub lightly over the shadow and peel away it off this takes off the top layer of shadow. We also did scraping of shadows etc, unlike a lot of the makeup stores out there we washed our brushes between customers, most just spray with alcohol or brush cleaner between clients. Lipsticks we would take a spatula and shave a bit off to use on a customers lip, also we sharpened our lip/eye pencils religiously because we were bit of anti-germies. The only thing I told people not to share is mascara because that is just a nasty little breeding ground for bacteria. -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 10:06 AMyea i agree alcohol spritzing is the way to go. I work in the lab at a biotech comapny. I do a lot of gene jock stuff (cloning DNA in bactereing, fungus, etc) so i work with bacteria everyday. In order to prevent contamination of our materials and prevent us from contracting crazy bacterias we use 70% ethanol on all of our equipment, but we also use a flame to keep the area sterile.
However since you will not have a flame using a high concentration of alcohol would be effective to at least prevent bacteria from establishing in the eyeshadow. If the eyeshadow is brand new and never used you should spray with alcohol each time after use to prevent whatever bacteria that did come in contact with the surface from establishing colonies! Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Its true that most likely it won't kill all bacteria present on the eyeshadow if you haven't done the alcohol thing before but it should disinfect it enough for safe use as long as each girl uses her own disinfected brush. At least if you spritz the eyeshadow and brushes with alcohol the eyeshadow would probably be a lot safer than if you touched a door handle in a public place and then touched that hand to your eye!
Sorry for such a long post for some reason when I explain things i just can't keep it to a few sentances!

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 1:23 PMI am a certified make-up artist and belly dance teacher/performer. Buy 99% alcohol at a make-up supply store (like Namies or Friends...both in North Hollywood NOT a beauty supply store because they don't carry it) and put it in a spray bottle. After each application, spray directly onto the eyeshadow. 99 (not anything less than 99) kills damn near all bacteria and takes about 1-2 minutes to dry. To be on the safe side, don't share the applicator either. Have each girl bring their own brush or applicator from home or, if sharing, spray the applicator down as well.
Seriously, I know it can be tempting to skip sanitizing. BUT, is it worth it? The eye area in particular is a breeding ground for bacteria. There are a lot of nasty infections that can result from sharing eye make up. Not highly likely, but it's definitely a possability. It really doesn't take that much more effort to do things safely in the first place. Takes a lot more to nurse a nasty eye infection!
Good Luck!

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 5:45 PMI know when I was working with makeup, we stressed to this one girl about sanitizing everything. She always said bah nothing will happen, but ewww she started getting the nasties nasties cold sore!! We all were so grossed out, we all became serious freaks about hygiene!

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 7:52 AMIf I can't find a make-up supply store in this little town would using just regular alcohol with 1% water in the spray bottle be basically the same thing or is this stuff sold at make-up supply stores made differently?
Thankz for the warnings and the info everybody! -

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 7:59 AMMost alcohol sold at liquor stores is a mix of water and alcohol, so you can read the proof on it to find out what it is.
Details on how it works in different systems:

Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 8:03 AMI don't know about bringing an actual alcoholic beverage to this thing...I'd rather not -
-
Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 8:08 AMI wouldn't have people dip into it. I would empty some out onto separate plates.Even if i skimmed the top off and sprayed it with the 99% alcohol with water before-hand it would kill the bacteria for others to use? -
-
Re: Sharing eye shadow?
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 9:31 AMpurchase a spray bottle and put the alcohol in there. I am pretty sure you won't find 200 proof ethanol since that is reserved mostly for industry use and therefore anything you buy you won't need to dilute with water you can just use it straight. You can spritz the surface of your eyeshadows and and your brushes with the alcohol and let dry. You won't be able to purchase 99% alcohol at a liquor store but the closest you can purchase in Everclear. Everclear is 95% grain alcohol (ethanol) which is 190 proof and thats the max proof that distilled alcohol is available. That would be plenty strong to kill bacteria and will dry quickly if you spray it on surfaces. Don't dilute it with water. If you can't find grain alcohol you can use drug store alcohol which is only about 70% alcohol but that will still kill bacteria its just that it doesn't dry as fast as the more concentrated stuff. hope that all makes sense... i work in the ethanol industry (biotech) so I tend to jump into science speak....
