You will all kill me!

topic posted Wed, May 7, 2008 - 3:35 PM by  Caleena
Im sure this subject has been brought up, MILLIONS of times. But what better place to go, right?
I JUST started using false eyelashes. I have a few questions...
1. What type of eyelash adhesive is best?
2. Do you put them on AFTER or BEFORE eyeshadow?
3. Is it ok to put them on OVER liquid liner?
4. Can you re-use them?
5. How long should you let the glue dry before applying them?

Thank you so much, as I am sure these questions have been answered before. Thanks for your patience!

DUO I love for holding them on, I use MAC's half-lash, I put them on BEFORE eyeshadow so the glue bonds to my skin, not onto the powder and then falls off, I put my liner on afterwards, b/c, too, my liner colors any leftover glue (hehe), yes you can reuse them, let the glue dry about 60 seconds for me!

Whew! such bad grammar I have!

yes, this question has been asked and re-asked, but we're not gonna kill you for asking again :P

the best thing to do before posting about a topic is to search the tribe first.
there is a search bar above the tabs where you see the topics, listings etc. and you can type your search terms in there.
so give that a try as well!

BUT to quickly answer your questions...
    1. there are 2 brands i can think of off the top of my head: Duo and Ardell. iv'e used both with no difference. you dont want to use anything like spirit gum for eyelashes.
    2. personal preference :) i put them on very last. (even after curling & mascara)
    3. yes, i usually do a very thick line of liquid eyeliner and then put the lashes on top.
4 yes, for the love of god(ess) re-use them!! they are like bindis~ re-use them till they die! i have eyelashes that are 5+ years old that i still use. if you take care of them well, they will stay looking nice.
(taking care= always put them back in the case after removing, never fall asleep in them, dont pull too hard on individual lashes, gently remove glue when it builds up etc...)
    5. apply the glue and wait till it dries just a bit so that it is tacky. if it isnt sticky enough yet you may have to hold the lash on your eye until it dries enough to stick.

    hope that helps! :)

i do want to add to #2 that the only thing i do put on *after* the lashes would be a glitter liner (eye kandy or similar)

ack! ...... i just found out they work so much better if you glue em to your lashes not the skin above your lash line.... like extensions. OMG this changed my life!

If you do this, be careful to remove them using eye makeup remover, not by pulling on them as you could lose lashes this way! (and you shouldn't pull them off anyway, but especially if they're glued directly to them)

Careful about the glue you use if you're going to do this--make sure its that white elmers looking stuff that comes off easy. Last night I used some superstrong clear eyelash glue and I about burst into tears trying to get these things off. Warm water, cold cream, nothing worked. They were stuck tight. I had to sacrifice a bunch of my lashes to get them off. And these were only little 3-lash sections!

Next time I'm going for the skin instead.

Yah, I looked through the threads as much as I could before my eyes felt like bleeding out of my skull. The eyes can only take so much reading on the monitor before they start to get sore. Thats why I straight up said, that I knew this was a common topic and thank you for your patience. And any thread I came across that was involved with eyelashes, did not answer all 5 of my questions.
So anyway, thank you all for your advice, though I am confused more so now than I was before. LOL. Everyone does different things I guess, but we all seem to agree on DUO adhesive. Awesome. Oh and thanks for the EyeKandy advice. Yeah, I would imagine that goes after the eyelashes. Thanks a million! *BIG HUGS*

I actually put them on after my liner and eyeshadow for the first time last weekend and it worked really well. I was amazed! I think the only way to get better at doing this is to practice, which is a pain I know. I also believe there are a few tutorials on youtube that have been mentioned by other people. Another thing that wasn't mentioned is you may need to trim them a little bit to better fit your eyelids. If you are nervous about this, maybe you could ask another dancer that you know does her make up really well. Good luck and hang in there, it does seem to get easier (I didn't cry at all last weekend when I was trying to put on my lashes, I just thought about it once lol)

    Glomming on to this thread...
Does anyone have any tips for the application step itself? I know you are supposed to let the glue dry and then try to attach the lashes from the center of the lid out. For some reason even after watching tutorial videos online I can't manage to put on fake eyelashes properly. They're always either too far up my eyelid or just falling off. I usually try it about six times (all of which are always failures) and then give up.
Is there any secret wisdom I lack in this department or is this just my innate spasticness?

Don't let the glue dry completely; just wait 30 seconds or a minute until it's tacky but still wet. I usually close my eye halfway so that I can see the lid better and get a good position on the lashes. I carefully match the lash up and press it as close to my lashes as possible, holding gently in place with my fingers for a few seconds until it's secure.

It's mostly just patience, carefulness (is that a word? It's very late...) and practice. :P
