Hi -- I'm an older woman, who, being very vain, wears contact lenses. Alot of eye makeup can be very irritating after about 5 minutes. Anyone know of products?

Don't line inside the eye and don't wear mascara?

I wear contacts too but I don't do either of those and I haven't had any trouble.

Geez, if I didn't do both of those, my eyes would disappear!

I really don't have a problem with most stuff bothering my eyes, but I do want some eye make-up with more staying power...I've worn contacts now for...geez, almost 30 yrs...and I've run up on some types of make-up that are a definite no-no...but lining the outer edge of my eyes just makes me look funny...and I've got short lashes, so mascara is a must...sooooo, just have to use types that don't irritate...

Rebekah - have you ever tried false lashes instead of mascara? They make some pretty sparse ones that are great for daily wear...even the "individual ones" instead of the strips might help. Or does the eyelash glue irritate your eyes just as much?

haha...I am a complete klutz with false lashes...but yes, I have used them before...I really don't need them for every day, anyhow...but I do occasionally use them when performing...it just takes me forever to get them right!!!

Oh...and no, don't seem to have any problem with the glue...as long as I don't use too much, that is...=p

My biggest problem is with liner...I can line my top lash line and the water line on the bottom...but if I try to line up under my bottom lashes, I look like a raccoon caught in the headlights!!!

The big thing (which I am sure you already know) is to put your contacts in before you start putting your makeup on and then take them out before you start washing it off. And avoid the sort of lengthening mascaras that contain fibres - those suckers are really irritating!

      ALMAY, ALMAY, ALMAY!!!!
when i wore contacts i loved all the almay products for my eyes- they seem to have little to no "fall out" or flaking particles to stick to contact lenses.

avoid cheap makeup- the lower quality can really irritate eyes that are already getting quite a bit of irritation from sticking your fingers in your eyes...

*giggle*...if I tried putting my make-up on before I put my contacts in, I'd look like a $2. prostitute...

Most of the make-up that I wear is in creme variety...I've even been using a creme eyeliner and putting it on with a tiny brush...so no chance of any problems with powders poufing into my eyes...and I really am pretty much stuck on the Maybelline Great Lash...it's always done well for me, so I stick with it...my big thing is making my make-up more dramatic for performance...I go heavier and I feel like I come out looking like a little girl that got into her mother's make-up...not used to such a 'bold' look, I guess...*shrugs*

As someone above mentioned...you must put contacts in before makeup application and take them out before removal. Don't line the water line. Use makeup that is hypoallergenic, such as Almay that was suggested above or Mary Kay. Be gentle when applying liner, use an eye primer to help liner go on smoother. Don't tug or press on the eye. With mascara, after you put in on DON'T touch your eyes during the time you are wearing it or any other eye makeup.

This is what I do and what works for me.

I've been wearing contacts for 20+ years. Never had an issue with eyeliner or mascara.

I'm too shaky-handed to use liquid, so I'll use Revlon Colorstay eyeliners with a gel eyeliner (that H.I.P. line from L'Oreal) and then black powder over that to set it all. Sometimes I'll do the eyelash thing. The trick to those is to wait at least 30 seconds for the lash glue to become tacky before applying the lashes.

Finally, spray the whole face with Ben Nye Final Seal... cuz I sweat like I have malaria.

I'm the same...I just can't so liquid eye-liner...stupid shaky hands...I have to use an angled brush or a pencil...

And speaking of which...gel liner? Is it in like a pencil form or brush, or what? Since I usually only wear make-up anymore if I'm dancing, I really haven't become familiar with some of the new stuff...do tell?

gel liner comes in a little pot and you apply it with a brush. i am in love with the gel liners from coastalscents.com in my opinion they work just as well as mac fluid line and the loreal hip knockoff. they come in many colors and are much cheaper! I have the white, peach bellini, maroon, and platinum, the light colors are even very pigmented. I am about to order the rest of the colors!
          Here is the direct link:

I also have many of their pallets and i highly reccomend them!

I always line my waterline...I will never be happy with my look if I can't. Not lining it is NOT a viable option for me...I don't wear makeup most of the time but when I do, that is what looks right. Good for you that you can make your makeup look right without it, but I can't. My only issue is that it doesn't last long, and ends up smudging under my eyes anyway. I am happy with the look until it smudges, which it always does. I currently use rimmel eyeliner...but thinking about trying something different.

For mascara, I always use waterproof, it seems to flake less. And I do look for hypoallergenic because I have somewhat sensitive skin.

I have issues with false lashes because a lot of the adhesives contain latex, which I am slightly allergic to. It makes my eyes itch after a short while. I think Hard Candy's adhesive does not contain latex, however. Any others that people know of?

I use a gel liner and set it with powder for my waterline. It seems to last much longer. It will not last all day though, nothing can really make it last all day seeing as it is a "water"line unless you can get your tear ducts to stop working

thanks! Yeah I can't do that with my tear ducts haha. When I do wear make up it isn't for the whole day usually anyway, it's usually in the evening, so this is great advice for me! Thanks again!

The gel eyeliner I use is by L'Oreal's H.I.P. line. You can find it in any CVS, Target, etc. It comes in a little pot and you use an angled brush. I personally prefer to buy my brushes from art supply stores. You can find awesome brushes for a fraction of what "makeup" brushes cost... and they are the same or better quality.

I'm also a contacts wearer. About 10 years ago, I developed major allergies to makeup. I was using 'pharmacy' brands at that time. I switched everything to MAC at first and have not had problems ever since. I now also use other brands in the same vein as MAC (e.g., Too Faced, Makeup Forever, Stila, Urban Decay) and everything is fine. I do line my waterline and don't have any problems but I know that it's not the case for everyone (contacts wearer or not).

I have to say that the investment in MAC products was well worth it. And you can totally trust the MAC advisers there: they won't steer you wrong!

In that vein, Bobbi Brown makes a kickass "Long Wear" gel liner. It's not the cheapest, but great quality & staying power. It's very workable before it sets and then stays put until you want it gone -- even on my fairly oily lids.

For small eyes: *not* lining the lower water line (makes water line actually makes the whites of small eyes look larger -- or use white liner on the water line and then darker at the lash base), but definitely doing at least a drop shadow at lash base, tapered from narrow at the tear duct to heavier at the outer corner. Wing it up if you have downturned eyes and then blend into upper lid liner. Use a colour a shade lighter than the liner you used on your upper lids. Smudge for a smoky effect and then using a narrow angle brush to line just the very base of the eyelashes in the darker upper lid colour.

      Make sense?

For contacts wearers: try Kiss Me mascara. It's a non-flaking formula that won't deteriorate into tiny chunks that get into your eyes and cause irritation. Also what the other posters have said about better-quality shadows that are well-set. Ben Nye Final Seal is good for under hot stage lights or in summer sun/heat. Some MUA's use an eyeshadow primer, but I find that well-set foundation/concealer does a fine job of that. You'll be wearing foundation anyway, so might as well let it to dbl-duty.

Liquid Liner: in my Twenties, I used to envy my High Goth Glamour friend's always-amazing and perfect liquid liner. She finally told me the key to it -- apply it every day for a month. Even if you just apply it and then wash it right off, do it Every Single Day for 30 days. The first week it'll still be shaky and weird, but you'll see improvement quite quickly thereafter, and then by the end of the month you'll be an old hand at it. Same holds true for applying fake lashes (actually, that only takes a few days of repeated practice, not a whole month).

(Also, I don't wanna smack talk the generally-awesome artists working for MAC, but I have had some iffy-at-best experiences at pretty much every makeup counter at one point or another. Not everyone who works for a makeup line knows *everything* yet -- no-one's infallible. I'm an experienced and professionally trained makeup artist, but I still have my off days, too. If a MAC or any other line's employee does something you're not too sure about look-wise for you, trust *your* gut. Don't just stick with something b/c a "pro" applied it. And don't get me started on the unsanitary state of counter samples! Yeesh!)

Yowee ladies, Everyone had some good suggestions. Yes, I MUST have mascara, mine are short, straight and light. And, since I'm a senior, i've got some serious crepeyness of the eyelids to deal with. That gel eyeliner sounds like a good bet, but MAC counters scare me. I don't sense that alot of verrrry young women, well trained or not, can relate to old skin as a canvas. I do like Almay for gentleness --- Maybe I'll live dangerously and try the MAC girlies at Macy's. What have I got to loose. Thanks --- keep the tips coming!

          Hi Marianna,
I don't put my contacts in till I'm done with my makeup. But I can only see closeup detail without them. I wash my hands thoroughly and use a clean tissue, to help not to smudge eyes when inserting lenses.
Have you tried false eyelashes? They really make your eyes pop! Don't forget to define your eyebrows, these two things alone will do wonders, and you haven't even put anything (makeup) on your eyes. A few women in our troupe wear stick-on tattoo/bindi type stickers at the inside/outside corners of their eyes. So you get colour and sparkle!
Also make sure your not using old makeup that may contain bacteria.
I never line my waterline. I think it makes your eyes look smaller anyway.
I do love to play with liquid liners. As you may have noticed from this weeks featured photo. hehe

          >> but MAC counters scare me.

You can buy from them online, too!

          >> make sure you don't have old makeup that may have bacteria

Yes! You shouldn't keep *anything* that has water in it (creme makeup of any kind, foundation, lipsticks, etc) for more than a year, as they can harbor bacteria.

there are many great ideas posted

    mascara:
water or tear proof is the only way to go
don't use the applicator that comes with it on your lashes, to prevent bacteria growth. purchuse the desposable applicators, only use them soak the applictor in alchol for 30mins. once a week and toss after one month.
and never pump your appliactor it breaks down the mascara faster and will create clumping

    liner
    liquid liner works

i use powder for myself and on my clients
if a solid powder> you dip your brush in water to dampen only then drag across shadow,
if a loose powder> use a small glass take an orange stick and add two tips worth of powder to the glass now slowly add drops of water and mix, make a paste, dip your brush in the mixture and apply
with eithier application for top lid keep closed for about 10 sec. to dry and set
if the powder flakes on appliaction you've not used enough water
you can substitute the water with aloe gel

remember to clean your brushes with brush cleaner or mild detergent at least once a week if you can only clean them once a month fill a small spray botltle with alcohol or anti bacterial (witch hazel is one example) lightly spray/mist your brushes after each use.

most people who think they were having an alergic reaction to their makeup are really having a reaction from the bacteria.
