Wow, Jessica...I'm very impressed by how articulate this post is...I know it's been a while ago, but I don't think I really read it well...

If you have issues in the future with build up, try the BS and then use a standard comb while it's still in your hair...you should see the product build-up roll off in beads...then rinse it with the ACV, then alot of clean, cool water to remove the rest...would be better than dish soap...eeeek!

Y'know, that's an idea...and if you have a really good stylist, they should be willing to work with you and your chosen methods...and they should also be able to see the benefits from just looking at your hair.

I'm really gonna miss not only my dance instructor, but my hairdresser, too...she point cuts my hair which seems to be the best method for my texture and length...and she's the only person who has actually made my daughter smile after cutting her hair...and that's saying alot for a very picky 14 year old!!!

I just tell them that I don't want it washed & I don't want products in it. Yes, they look at me like I'm crazy. Yes, they still try to give me the hard sell on their products. If pushed, I will tell them that I use a non-SLS shampoo bar & tell them that if they have one, I'd be more than happy to let them use it. Usually that shuts 'em up for some reason...
my question is...

how do you all or what do you all No Poo'ers say to the people who cut your hair? I often times do a cheapie cut which is fine, my hair is short so I don't care, but damn you walk in and try to explain and they just look at you like you are crazy!!!

any other issues or do you just side step and just say I don't want it washed?

I've been reading some other stuff about the totally no poo method - no bicarb, no acv, just vigorous rubbing under cool water. Has anyone else tried that way since Jessica posted that thephoenix.com link? Do you think I will be able to hold down a job in the transitional phase? I hate the idea of stinky hair, but I love the thought of doing away with product!

Sure, cuz it's about balancing out your scalp, first and foremost...and you'd probably have an easier time than those with longer hair, cuz I'd think it'd be alot easier to disguise the detox period with short hair than with long...and with the baking soda, any product you use in your hair is immediately removed, since baking soda removes any and all build up...

OK.... I have very short hair (about 2.5 inches at the longest, mostly less than that) AND I use a lot of product in fixing it... would no 'Poo even work?

I kept waiting for the baking soda to get rid of the gunk but it just wasn't working, but good ol' Dawn did the trick and I haven't had gooey hair since. I haven't had any trouble with BS drying my hair out, I read somewhere (prolly on the livejournal site) that the water baking soda solution mixes with the oil from your scalp and the action of rubbing your head kind of soponifies the mix and in my case the hair gets really slippery and then the vinegar rinse spreads the oil through your hair. Now I don't know how acurate that is but so far it has worked for me, my hair tends toward the really greasy anyway and everyone has a different chemistry donchaknow! I think that someone said that they subsituted sea salt for the BS and it worked for them.

Actually, baking soda will strip out any kind of build-up from your hair...is what I used to use back in the 80's big hair days to get all the hair spray build up out...but it'll make your hair feel like wheat straw afterwards...that's one of the reasons I've been kind of timid about using a straight BS/ACV method...I mean, I get the reasons for it and all...but I guess it's just still embedded in my mind and I'm afraid of stripping the colour and everything out...*shrugs*

I do use a vinegar rinse after I use my shampoo bar...but I also use a little bit of a light conditioner, too...just enough to squeeze thru my ends till we get past this harsh winter cold...and I'll probably stop that if I can ever manage to get some coconut oil...

Love the idea of the essential oils in the mix...might have to try that with my vinegar rinse...

thanks to this post I decided to go no 'poo too. The first week was horrible! It was like I had washed my hair in candle wax, my hair was stiff and clumpy and gross as soon as it dried. I almost gave up, but then decided to sort of "strip" my hair, so I washed it with dish soap and oh my goodness the bubbles felt fantastic and then I did and ACV rinse. My hair has been happy ever since, I wash it every 3-4 days with the BS/ACV method. I add two drops each Tea Tree oil and Rosemary to my BS and about four drops jojoba oil to my ACV solution, my hair comes out light bouncy and super shiney! I love it! Also my back acne has almos gone away! this is something I have struggled with since high school! Thanks for bringing this to our attentions!

Because of this thread I decided to give the baking soda/acv a shot since I had both. My hair and especially my scalp were pretty nasty since I am trying to go longer between washings and it had been about 10 days. Also it doesn't help that for some reason I can not keep my fingers from scratching, poking and proding my scalp. Anyhoo...I think I like the baking soda/acv. All the flakes and greasies are gone, my dreads feel pretty good...nice and clean. The test will be how long I can go with out washing this time.

I switched shampoos a while back and really dried out my scalp. Ordered the Lush Soak and Float since that is what they recommend for dry flakies and it ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
Smells so bad (to me) that I can't even keep in down below in the boat, I have to put it in a plastic tub and leave it out in the cockpit but it really really really works!!

I will always keep a bar of it in case I have dry scalp problems in the future.

When I first dreaded my hair (almost 3 years ago) I had to work up to not washing but once a month. For some reason I ended up back in the same ole routine of every couple of days. Now that I am getting ready to do some more long term sailing, I am trying to get my scalp "trained" to go a month or longer. It's annoying and itchy but well worth it in the long run.

So I did my first BS/ACV wash yesterday, I did CO for two weeks to detox...

OMGs! I was able to comb my hair after showering with NO snarls, even better I was able to comb it when I got up this morning, again with NO snarls.

I have never been able to comb my hair without the comb catching (I use a wide tooth comb) No to mention how my hair feels! My wife made me sit before I left for work so she could run her fingers through it! (Yes, she is now a convert to No Poo!!!)

Coconut oil. OMG. =) wonderful on the skin and really gave my hair what it needed. It looks a tad greasy but feels fantastic. I was very excited!

The Dr. Bronners magic soap is magical indeed. You should be able to find it at any health food store that sells cosmetics and the like. (Wholefoods and Trader Joes both carry it). It can also be used to wash dishes, and do laundry...it's amazing stuff. It's very potent, because it's almost entirely essential oils, and a little goes a LOOOOONG way. So for showering purposes I will take an empty plastic bottle and fill it about 1/4 way with soap and the rest with water. If you don't dilute it use about the size of a pea to wash your hair. As for rosemary essential oil, you may be able to find it at whole foods too, and if not look for an herb store, they usually carry essential oils. :)

I've been doing CO washes this week, I've had to do that every day to keep my scalp from itching. Thankfully I have not had to use poo, my hair comes out clean but still a little dry and frizzy.

My bike helmet concentrates all the sweat from my head right on my scalp, and that is when it starts itching. Just rinsing my hair does not fix the itch, and my hair is greasy afterward. I am going to try and dilute the conditioner and see if I can ween my scalp off of it. It seems like my hair has two speeds, greasy or dry.

Dr Bronners lavendor soap... hmmm I like this idea... where does one find that... thanks, I was pretty worried about the frequency of washing issue especially w/ work outs.

that and these oils of which you all speak? where can I find those? I feel like my hair is very dry at this point... greasy but dry? if that makes any sense at all. ...

I'm still holding out for this to work! my face is reacting a little, and have done BS once... not to satsified, a conditioner scrub (needed something not sure if was 'right' or not) and rinsed with ACV because I doubted the conditioner being accepatable!

I dance between 2-4 hours daily, and I've been no-pooing it for about a month now. I'm so happy with the results so far, and I did not find the transition to be tough. Once or twice a week I will use a little diluted Dr. Bronner's lavender soap on my scalp. I rinse with Apple cider vinegar every day in the shower, and when I get out I put a few drops of rosemary essential oil into my palm and apply it to the ends of my hair. I have always had really curly (and often coarse and frizzy hair) this past month my hair has been very shiny and more curly than ever before. It even seems like my ends are more smoothed out.
Anyway, in regard to the work out question, I wash my body daily, and usually just rinsing my hair seems to work just fine in terms of keeping it clean. I just pay attention to how my scalp is feeling, It seems like every 3-4 days is when it likes to be scrubbed and that keeps it from getting itchy. I also use a wide bristle wooden brush, on my scalp with dry hair before showering. It helps to exfoliate the skin and increase circulation. Plus, it feels amazing. :)

that was going to be my next question...

mostly for those of you who work out... I work out for about two hours in some form 4-5 times a week, other than that I'm riding my horse, which requires a helmet... and I wear a hard hat all day. I always always have a bandana on, which really cuts back on the helmet hair, but I am more concerned with the cleanliness factor due to work outs.

Ye, that's the thing that kind of puts me off...back in the hair hell days of the 80's, we used to use baking soda to strip hair product build up out of our hair and it made it feel like wheat straw, plus it stripped the hell out of the colour...always had to condition like a mad bastard and then redo the colour...

I think I'm just gonna have to stick with my shampoo...besides the stripping factor, I just could not deal with 3 or 4 months of ick before my hair and scalp felt human, again...

After dying my hair with the henna, I try not to wash it for several days. If it starts to look oily, I brush my hair with a little lemon juice and a natural bristle brush. That seems to disperse the oil.

I use diluted shampoo only at the scalp. Otherwise, it is conditioner!

When this came up about a year ago, I started the bc/acv method after much thought and research. I have been so happy with my hair after the initial adjustment period. My hair is very thick, so it took a couple of months before things settled down, and I had to adjust the baking soda up to 3 tsp to accommodate for thickness. 2 tsp wasn't cutting it. I rinse in-between washings, and I wash 1 to 2 times per week. Then use the little bit of coconut oil as a conditioner as well, only when I wash, and 3" down from roots to tip, otherwise I get oily very quickly. That is what has worked for me, and may not be the same for everyone, but my hair is lovin it! In a pinch I have used the little bit of regular shampoo and conditioner that I have left, and it throws my hair and scalp out of whack and it needs to be washed again properly within 2 days.

Remembering my Grandfather, he used to say that it was necessary to give your hair 100 strokes before bed. I did a little research on this too, and learned that not only does it help disperse the oil throughout your hair and make it soft and shiny, but it also stimulates your scalp, which also stimulates your brain. :)

I second that Maral, its a good reason to use the hair pretties (hats, flowers and banana's, scarfs) that otherwise don't get much use.

In that case I would recommend easing into it by washing with conditioner or finding shampoos without SLS, rather than jumping straight into the hardcore BS/ACV.

I haven't used conventional shampoo in about a year and a half and my hair is so much happier.
I most often "wash" (thorough friction) with a rich conditioner, which I think rinse out and follow with a light weight conditioner every where except the roots. My regular conditioners are from Ouidad www.ouidad.com as DevaCurl's conditioners aren't rich enough for my hair.
The Curly Girl book was SO helpful in learning how to deal with my hair and I still refer back to it.
About once a week I use a Deva Curl No Poo or Low Poo and follow up with a deep conditioner (either Deva Curl or Ouidad).
I love the Deva Curl Arc Angell for styling.
When I want to shower and not do my hair I first spray it with Ouidad's Botanical Boost. It smells really nice and is a lightweight moisturizer. :)
Keep at it. Try several different products if the first ones you try aren't quite right.
I also sometimes exfoliate my scalp by mixing a couple tablespoons brown sugar into conditioner. Works great! This is a great "destinkyfier" (smoke, sweat) too. :)
It helped a lot to find someone who really knows how to cut curly hair (no more long layers for me). I searched reviews online to find people in the area who either do "curly Girl" cuts or ouidad's Carve and Slice method.

OK so now I'm five days in or so.

Washed my hair with the baking soda and ACV as per the directions yesterday. Let's just say that things are getting interesting. I guess I'm getting to the 'adjustment period'. My hair is pretty greasy even after being washed, though it is clean... if that makes any sense. It's kinda weird. When I put it up last night, I didn't have to use any product. Hmmm...

I hope this part goes quickly. I'm gonna be a hat girl for the next coupla days methinks.

I do a modified version--conditioner only most of the time, and diluted shampoo on the scalp (not the length) once a week to remove any build up. My hair loves it!

Hi Ladies -

I was wondering if there are any 'no poos' out there in dancey-land.

What's no 'poo? It's not using shampoo to wash your hair anymore. Instead you switch to using diluted sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV). ( There is a process to it.) You can read more about why you'd do such a thing and how to do it here: http://babyslime.livejournal.com/174054.html

Anyway, I just started my no 'poo experiment today and I was wondering if any of you had tried it before.
