I've been henna-ing my hair for about a year, touching up my roots or redyeing my whole head every six weeks or so. While I love pretty much everything henna does for my hair, I'm wondering what the best way is to get back to my natural color (dark blonde/dishwater blonde) without having to go through that long, awkward growing-out-the-roots phase.

If I mix cassia in with the henna, will it lighten over time, or am I going to end up with a little rainbow effect? Dark tips to light roots? Has anyone else done something like this?
Thanks!

Have you been seeing all the new highly confusing products that have been flashing ad by ad?
I think Maybelline is seriously underestimating just how uncoordinated many woman are... do you really want to put something up against your eye when it is vibrating?
Especially something loaded with icky sticky eye-burning black mascara?
Honestly! (I am curious how many casualities have resulted)

or this lash tube extension stuff... that is highly suspect. It actually builds length onto your lashes that stays put all day and then just washes clean away? I wonder what happens when you cry? Will it start raining confetti down your cheeks? (make sure your guy is true before putting that on your eyes!)

Or the Drew Barry bigger brush- bigger lashes theory.... let's just use a catepiller already!
And the British company's spring loaded plexy tip- boing! splat! Guess I don't need to bother coloring my eyebrows now!

Or the new Rogaine for lashes being promoted by Brooke Shields... I can't help being reminded of that fantastic Energizer ad that used to be on where it seemed like a hair club for men commercial of a guy telling you about his regrowth of thick natural hair and then the bunny bangs by across the back with his little drum "still going..." and the guy spins around and his whole back is covered in that "thick natural regrowth of hair" too! lol
Well, the I couldn't help but wonder if you spilled your eyelash hair growth stuff on your cheek or upper lip... hehe

When I first got a bottle of Pure & Basic's Glitter-Up! lotion (the lighter cream color), I thought I had my body glitter needs solved. I assumed the lotion would dry and disappear, leaving only the shimmer of micro-glitter . But no. When the lotion dries on my skin, it turns blue! So my belly, chest, and arms look bruised, or dirty, or some sort of awful. Is it just my skin, or am I doing something wrong?

This time around I was intrigued by Middle Eastern women, from their striking eyes to their astonishing makeup. Middle Eastern women wear occasionally heavy makeup that looks gorgeous. Their trademark: lots of eyeliner. In my research I learned that both men and woman from the Arabian Peninsula wore Kohl as they had a strong belief that the liner protected their eyes the scorching sun. They also used it for the simple purpose of making their eyes appear bigger and brighter. Now the Kohl used in the Arabian Peninsula is nothing similar to the Kohl pencils we use now in modern makeup; the kohl they use a very fine black substance that can be found in grocery stores in Arabia.

I put the primer on the back of my left hand, and did two mineral shadow swatches. The spot with the primer survived bathing both of my children, as well as myself. Still looked vibrant.

Real-life... I wore it for our performance, and it held way better than my UDPP ever did. Hands down.

The mascara is quite nice as well. Very build-able for a performance look, but also looks nice as a subtle everyday look.

I've always been frustrated with the fact that I can draw some very pretty henna designs on paper then completely fail to reproduce them with paste, and I think the henna penna might solve my problem. And at the price of one decently detailed professional henna job, I thought it's probably worth a try.

So has anyone here actually tried it? If so, what was your experience? How dark did it stain? I tend to stain pretty dark, regular henna gets almost black on my feet and fingers. Was it easy to use? How long did the stain last? how would you rate the product overall? Which color looks the mostl iek regular henna?

Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences!!!!!

I know this is a huge WIDE subject and its a shot in the dark but I was just curious what others thoughts were as I have pretty much exhuasted my ideas... without seeing a dr.

A week ago last thursday I had some nasty reaction which I assumed was a bug bite to my left eye, it was itching and I realized it was a lot more itchy than a regular 'my eye is itching' kind of itch. And shure enough w/in 20 minutes my left eye was all puffy- well the area around the eye rather... was all puffy top and bottom- not so bad I couldn't see but pretty bad.

Left work early and applied ice and benedryl, and it kind of died down.

Next morning my RIGHT eye is all puffy. (and no sign of bug bite on the other eye)

Saturday had another weird reaction and I actually was up half the night between the itching the drugs and the ice. Nothing massivefor the following days- a few slightly baggy looking eyes worse than normal but nothing outrageous.

Woke up yesterday morning (so 8 days later than the first episode) early to make breakfast nothing. went back to sleep and woke up 4 hours later with a swollen left eye.

WTF.

I've changed/replaced my most used eyeliner/mascara combo's but I really don't think it has anything to do w/ make up since I don't wear it consistently and there hasn't been a direct link- I can still wear make up and have no adverse reaction.
Food combinations have been staying the same and I can't think of anything I've eaten over the past week thats bad or unusual for me (roommie has bad acid reflux so our diet is pretty boring for the most part)
I've never shown any allergies to flora and fauna- also by the fact I woke up yesterday went back to sleep and woke up w/ a puffy eye... all in a mostly pet free room with no plants and I didn't go outside.

Any thoughts? I'm about ready to see a doctor but its hard to justify that- I mean its sporadic and its just puffy- a lot of itch has not happened, just random swelling. Any thoughts ladies?

Great color, no staying power. Zilch. Loreal's lipstick works much better, IMO. Ditto MAC eyeshadow. It doesn't blend very well at all.
If you're wondering why I'm asking......well, it's because I'm teaching one at next years' 'Cues and Tattoos' festival, and have a bazillion ideas, but wanted to hear others thoughts on what they'd want to know.
To paraphrase shading: shading goes beneath blush, under your chin, and any other places that are usually in the shadows on your face. To capitalize on shading, one should buy not a shade of foundation darker, but an eyeshadow that is fleshy but in one's range (cool, neutral, warm) One should also buy highlighter.

My skin is much softer and clearer and the dry patches are clearing up along with the zits.
When I looked at the bottle it has "Does not contain parabens" written on it. What's a paraben? Is it something that I should avoid regularly? Is it the absence of said parabens that has done such wonders for my skin?

Since I bought it directly from the store that specializes in Indian products, do you think it would be safe to use? I like not having to put on tons but would like to have something just to make me look put-together. When i wear eyeliner and lip gloss, I think it doesn't look complete. I thought maybe if I put a foundation on it might help. I do not want to cover my freckles though but it seems like everything I have tried makes it look like thats what I am trying to do. It doesn't look natural.

Are there any suggestions on foundations or minerals, etc... that just even up your skin without covering up freckles? I have tried Bare Essentuals (sp?) but it made me itch really bad and it didn't look all that great. Any help would be wonderful :) THANKS!

I thought I'd share my experience going no 'poo with facial skin care. For YEARS I dealt with acne that was moderate to severe. Since I quit using soap and started washing with an apple cider vinegar and water mixture and using pure coconut oil as a moisturized, my skin completely cleared up, and now even the scars are vanishing. It has truly been miraculous. I always thought since I was told I had oily skin that there was no way I could put anything remotely oily on it. Turns out coconut oil contains anti-bacterial properties. I was amazed at how fast it worked. Before I used to dread looking in the mirror first thing in the morning because I never wanted to see what might have popped up in the night. Now I look forward to seeing myself in the morning because each day, my skin just keeps getting happier and happier. I'm so grateful.
Plus, not shelling out a bunch of money on skin care products means that I have bigger belly dance jewelry budget. :D
Has anybody else made a similar transition? I'm very curious.

The majority of dancers I see have hair at least down to their chins. That doesn't bother me, because I figure it sets me apart and gives me an individual look, but I do realize that having more hair gives other dancers a lot of options for hairdressing that I don't have.

I think the dramatic lines of an almost bald head especially with dark and smoky eye makeup can look exotic and sexy. But we all know, when you're on stage everything needs to be MORE than when we're on the street, and I worry that my head will look naked or underdone, or god-forbid I'll have a pinhead-thing going on with a lovely dance costume and no hair to dress and emphasize. My hair is *visible* (medium brown), I don't have a truly naked scalp, but still.

The only thing I can really think of is turbans. Sooooo not me. I know I could invest in a wig, but that's not really what I'd like to do either. Dread falls are out, my hair just isn't long enough to attach them to. Any ideas?

My natural color is a medium brown with both golden and reddish tones in the sun. I love my color but have been dyeing it for years to cover the grays (I started getting a lot of them in my early 20s!). I've been wanting to make the switch to a more natural hair color solution like henna for a while now, but have been hesitant because I don't want to go red, but I don't want to end up too dark either (which I've read on forums tends to happen over time when using both henna and indigo). I really just want to cover the grays and otherwise leave my natural color alone. I've tried several henna gloss recipes with no luck. After scouring this tribe and the hennaforhair.com forums for months I finally found a posting with a recipe that sounded promising (http://tinyurl.com/rxk6eq) so I ordered the supplies I needed and tried it out last night.

THE RECIPE AND TECHNIQUE:
I used SusyQ's recipe that I linked to above. This recipe is just enough to do your roots, so if you want to do all your hair, you'll need to increase the amounts accordingly. (And for anyone who's wondering, the purpose of the gelatin in this mix is to act as a thickener, which makes a nice creamy mix resulting in less drips.)

Here are the ingredients:
2 - 2 1/4 oz. packets of unflavored gelatin (one box usually has 4 packets)
6 oz. of water
2 Tbs of Henna (I used Yemen henna from mehandi.com)
2 Tbs of Indigo (I also got this from mehandi.com)

After boiling the water, I turned off the burner and slowly added the gelatin to the pot of water, stirring until dissolved. Then I stirred in the henna, followed by the indigo, mixing until everything was blended well. I let this sit for 1.5 hours for color release and then put the mix into a plastic carrot bag (an applicator bottle would work, too). I applied the mix to my roots ONLY, covered my head with a plastic cap and left it on for 30 minutes, no more, no less.

THE RESULTS:
I was so happy with how well this worked that I just had to share! I had beautiful golden highlights where my grays used to be, and the brown hair remained its natural color. I followed up with a conditioning treatment of Cassia for an hour (since 30 minutes isn't enough time for the conditioning benefits of henna to work), and wow! My hair is soft, shiny and gray-free! And the whole process, including the Cassia, took about 4 hours. I'm hooked!

I was super excited to try the no 'poo because I thought I could go much longer btwn washes, but it's not cutting it for me. I've been working on this for about 6 months with no improvement. How often do those of you who no 'poo go btwn washes?

I'm wondering if I should be brushing my hair out every so often to move the oil down, but I have wavy hair and doing that will remove the beloved waves.

FWIW, here's my routine. I either shampoo/conditioner or baking soda/apple cider vinegar once per week. Mid-week, I do a water rinse. I started alternating btwn the S/C and BS/ACV because just BS/ACV was giving me dandruff.
What's no 'poo? It's not using shampoo to wash your hair anymore. Instead you switch to using diluted sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV). ( There is a process to it.) You can read more about why you'd do such a thing and how to do it here: http://babyslime.livejournal.com/174054.html
I happen to have naturally dark, almost black hair, and dark brown eyebrows that are often categorized as "full shaped."

needless to say...it doesn't look very good.
I only get away with it since I have fair a fair asian/caucasian skin tone.

thankfully the wig has long bangs that cover the eyebrows to an extent, but you can still see them since they are fuller shaped.

any tips on lightening them with MAKEUP. (i'm not bleaching them, or thinning them out to much, so those are out the window.)

I know there's a method you can use with school glue and MagiCake colors or acrylic paint for a cartoony effect...but since this needs to be natural looking, i wanted to avoid it.
and i know you can "block out" eyebrows with concealer. but I don't want to appear to have no eyebrows..i just want them to be more matching with the golden blonde wig.

thanks!

I have glasses and I have been considering contacts. While they'd be fine for performances and daily wear, the thought of needing nothing when I first wake up to a blurry world is very enticing. No worries of make up in my contacts either.
I saw my eye doc yesterday and he said I was an excellent candidate for Lasik surgery. He said in all his time as an eye doc, he's only had one person say they would not have done it. She now has chronic dry eye. His son had it done and he loves it.

Hi,
I'm a performer &dancer (obviously...why else would i be here :-P)
and I am currently performing in an extremely active outdoor daytime show/parade called "Celebrate! A Street Party" at the Disneyland Resort here in California.
Because of the effort and sweat involved with this show (it consists of 3 ten minute mini-shows that encompass a variety of high-energy dance styles, in the sometimes 90 degree-plus California weather) I've noticed that my face looks absolutely HORRENDOUS after I finish the show.My eyeshadow stays wonderfully pigmented, but my skin looks terrible. The problem with this is that it is not a "far away" stage show. We perform out on the street literally face to face with our guests, and even invite them to dance with us on the street at certain points of the show. Being so close to them it makes me feel very self-conscious about how my makeup looks knowing people can see it so closely (and i'd never want to ruin the "disney magic" for them by looking so shaby); but obviously I have to wear a fair amount of makeup...it being a show and all.
and to top it all off, we perform two parades of this a day.
I've been performing for years and even work as a general makeup artist from time to time..but I still can't figure out what's going on.
My foundation is becoming splotchy, cakey, poreousy, and creasy. I've never had this problem before. I don't even sweat "a lot" compared to the other performers due to my natural lack of sweatiness when dancing.
I've been experimenting with different combos of makeup and primer and it always consists of sunscreen/spf, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and a powder to set it (either pressed foundation or translucent). Sometimes I'll set it with a little Fix+ spray as well if my skin is already feeling cakey and powdery.
It's very strange, i've never had to worry about this before.
I've tried MAC, Benefit, and even Ben Nye.

I've been thinking about trying Ben Nye's Color Cake with their translucent powder and final seal. But I'm worried about looking too "cakey" , powdery, and unnatural out on the street. Does the Color Cake have that effect?
I have Ben Nye's cream foundation as well that I'm willing to try, but I worry that it won't be resistant enough.
Do you think this combo will do the trick?
I also may want to try a new concealer for my undereyes and "side nose" areas (i don't know what the correct term is for that... but the discolored side nostril areas i sometimes get) My Benefit 'Erase Paste" works wonderfully, but sometimes gets so cakey and creasey after performing
(which is why I can't use the potted MAC concealer as well) is there any good Ben Nye concealer that won't look so cakey and keep a smooth natural appearance?

any suggestions? I'd really appreciate any input.
I'd generally like to stick with Ben Nye or MAC (maybe even Benefit) since Drugstore makeup isn't resistant enough for me outside of everyday use.

Thank you for taking the time to read my essay here :-P
But after today's literal "melt-down" performance on my face...i HAD to do something.

I barely fit into an A cup and if I'm wearing a regular push-up bra, I'm fine...but in the event you're wearing a triangle top, choli, etc. how do you not look completely flat chested? One idea I'm throwing around is getting a Nubra (silicone gel-like stick on that clips together in the middle). Has anyone tried one of these?
