I stumbled across this web page when I did a Google image search for "Arabic eyes." It has lots of good pics of really dramatic makeup (and some crazy hair styles, too). Here's the link:

best supplier of henna for hair/ question about Cassia

Hello,
I'm looking to purchase body art quality henna for the purpose of dyeing my hair. Anyone know of a local place in San Francisco? or is it best to go online? It seems the best online store is mehandi.com. Any other suggestions? They seem pretty expensive.

Also, anyone have experience using Cassia for blondes? Does it really cover grey?

Red eyeshadow/liner

Who out there has experience using red eyeshadow or red eyeliner? Which do you prefer? What are the different brands that sell either? Which is the best for non-creasing?

I recently used Eye Kandy for the first time on my daughter for her cheer competition. Here is a photo: http://people.tribe.net/ddb419b8-a5a6-4608-a91e-53f59b1ebc62/blog/c5525c50-539b-4659-ae04-aa270bda92c2

Although I have some experience using glitter as an eyeshadow, some of the other moms helping out didn't. In fact, one mom who is a makeup artist by trade hated the stuff & couldn't figure out how to put it on even though I showed her step by step instructions. She ended up mixing the 2 colors so some of the girls' makeup was different than the rest.

Anyway, I thought maybe for next time a red eyeshadow or eyeliner would work better under the glitter. I really didn't like the liquid sugar much - it dries way too fast. And when you have 30 cheerleaders to do makeup on having to replenish your glue almost each time you do a brush stroke is time consuming. Our coach had some razzle Dazzle eye glitter & an adhesive called Stick-It Eye Glue. I think I liked this adhesive better. And the glitter seemed very comparable to Eye Kandy.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BUNS!

Okay, normally I employ the talents of my sister to help me with my hair when I do a performance, but soon it will be a different situation. I'm about to go off and do my own performances in which my sisters services cannot be attained. I have asked her to show me, but how can I see what she's doing back there, even with a mirror? ;-p So, I ask you ladies: How do you gals make your hair buns? Any good tips or even tutorials that you know of that can help me out?

I really like these side ones from loverly Samantha:

Now, I know we all can't make Sammy buns, but a good bun recipe would be awesome! ;-p

Thanx!

Very oily skin and little experience with make-up = ACK!

Growing up, I used to try to apply makeup, but nobody ever taught me how to do it properly. I've spent most of my life not wearing makeup at all.I know the very basics of application (young teenager level) but I am 35 yrs old and have just started performing so I need to learn quickly but also not waste money trying all kind of makeup that will not work for my face. I can't afford much.

I've always had oily skin, luckily I manage to keep the pimples away. I get oil all over, not just in certain areas. I've done two performances so far and each time my make-up is messed up before I even start dancing...good thing the lighting was low in the first performance. I was trying to make my eyes dramatic so I put black eyeliner over most of the lids with little points on the outside of my eyes, then layered some inexpensive colour eye shadows over that. But I was born with crease lines in my lid, which combined with the oils, the stuff just collects there and smears. I looked in the mirrow when I got home and was appalled at my face!

I have a foundation I got a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure its the best with oily skin either. Does anyone have suggestions for good brands or types to try and ways of spot-touching removing oil throughout the day without messing up the makeup?

Due to the second thread reaching over 50 posts, I have started a new one for the weekly photo. To recap: each Monday morning I go through the photo archives in reverse order and select an inspiring photo for our cover girl spot for the week. Right now (February, 2008) I am in April of 2007 in the archives. So many wonderful photos in there!! This thread is so that you can go directly to the featured photo and leave a comment, as tribe will not automatically click you through when you select the main photo. And it can take some time to search for it. Please leave comments about the photo there in the photo section, as tribe sends a copy of the comment to the person who posted the photo. Chat is still fine on this thread too, we just want everyone to know when they get their well deserved kudos!

This week's featured photo is of Politti's hair:

I'm posting this as to not hijack the "allergy to eye liner" thread. I started coloring my hair this past December. I've been using the same color each time. I have to re-color about every two weeks. The last two times I colored my scalp gets itchy. It takes forever to do my roots; by the time I get it all done through my hair the color has been on the roots longer than the 25 minutes the package tells me to leave it on the hair. Do you suppose I'm leaving it on too long total? Will another brand help? What has been any one else's experiences?

Thank much.

I just bought one of the new Jane mineral gel liners in Dk. Brown- the packaging looks just HIP gel liner, but of course it's Jane cheapo prices. It goes on and blends smoothly; didn't last quite as long on me as the HIP, but no complaints, and the brush bristles are softer than HIP. Looks like a good one- I'll get me some other colors next time.

ingrown hairs: revisited

After reading everyone's tips & tricks I decided to try a few new things and thought I'd give a report on my progress....heh.

-Kiss My Face shaving lotion (unscented) is awesome! My legs are very smooth after using it.
-I tried a better quality blade, helped with smoothness but I got irritated more easily, which leads to the next thing...
-I decided to use a lotion with salycidic acid in it (its a Clean & Clear medicated moisturizer for the face but oh well) and that reduced redness by quite a bit.
-BufPuf makes a sponge for the body now & its the best exfoiliator I have ever used, & even though some ingrown hairs are coming to the surface I am noticing I am getting less of them. My skin is also way smoother.

Anywho, I thought some of you ladies who suffer the woes of weird leg hair would be interested in trying some of these things. Hope it helps you the way it helped me. Good luck!

Big, sultry, pouty lips

I'm looking for some tips to make my lips look more plump and full. I want an Angelina pout! I'd like to do this with make-up, and I know about putting darker shades around the edges, but are there any other tips?

What are people's thoughts on body modifications, like enhancements? I have heard about this product: http://www.restylane.com/ , but until more research is done I'm not sure how I feel about injecting a 'gel' into my body. Not that I wouldn't mind lightening up my laugh lines. I like that it's temporary....and not quite as expensive as other treatments. I'm just not sure I'd be willing to do this far...okay maybe I would be ;)

I still could never afford it, right now I'm just day dreaming. What are your thoughts?

I'd really like to get a great cat eye look for both dance and day-to-day but I have heavy hooded eyes (sometimes called Bedroom Eyes) and when my eyes are open you can't really see my upper lid at all.

Here's a pic of me with my eyes open:

I am in the market for new facial care/cleansing products. My sister really likes and recommends the products from DHC
( www.DHCcare.com ) they are on the pricier side -for me anyway- but I would spend the money if they really worked that great. Anyone else have any opinions or experience with these products? Thanks!

any suggestions...(x-post from short belly hair)

I have been getting my hair cut short for a little over a year now. Recently (about the last 3 times) the new hairstylist has razor-cut my hair. I like the pixie-effect, but it makes it look fried after a week or so. I would like to ask her to NOT razor it next time.
Does razor cutting tear up really fine hair?
Any suggestions to make it not look fried and not look greasy at the same time (as most leave in conditioners do to my limp little locks)?
Thanks!

One crepey eye

Yes I have one crepey eye and it's crappy, er, crepey right above the upper eyelid and the skin between the lid and brow seem to be sagging a bit. And if knowing my age is helpful, I was born the year Kennedy was shot. I have one freakin' line on my entire face that's a smile line probably from 20 years of smoking (quit 13 years ago though) and I gotta go and end up with a craptacular crepey eye. =O)

I have been using the following without much success:

L'Oreal Eye Defense daily for over 1 year

Olay Regenerist Eye Derma-Pods first thing in A.M. but only if my eyes are puffy, since November

Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle Intensive Deep Wrinkle Eye Cream nightly for about 6 or 8 weeks

I was putting eye shadow over eye cream but stopped because the color immediately sunk in to the crepe. "Can be used under makeup or alone" my eye! I have stopped my long time habit of applying shadow with an applicator and am learing to use a brush which seems to help at least in the a.m. but as the day wears on, down in to the crepe creeps the shadow.

Oh wait, there's one more wrinkle (ha ha) to the problem; my eyelids, inner corners and under the lower lash areas are O-I-L-Y with a capital Oi! so I must use a shadow base, Lancome actually, but am very careful not to bring that up too far and mix it in to the crepe.

This is so crappy, what can I do about my one eye that is crepey? =O)

Call me Crepey Suzette (but never call me late for dinner)

Vegan makeup, where to look?

Morning ladies. This may have been a topic before, and if so, I apologize. I am finally running out of my old makeup and looking to replace it with some vegan alternatives. It's easy enough to find lists of vegan friendly products online. What I can't find are places to buy them at. Would I have better luck looking at a fancy department store, a health food store, or one of the big mega chains? Am a SOL and relegated to ordering online?

Thanks.

I have read some reviews on the foundation on makeup alley and they generally are good. I wonder if it would be good for performing. It's not available at Sephora yet, it is only available at the MUFE Boutique in NYC. I'm sure Sephora will have it. Has anyone gotten this yet?

Another new discovery

I watch a lot of tutorials on makeup and I'm always looking for something new to do with my eyes to make them stand out on stage. I watch Pursebuzz, Enkore, and several others and I've also discovered Makeup Geek www.makeupgeek.com . Her last tutorial was a total matte look--a retro Twiggy look from the 60s. Of course, I had to try it, knowing full well that I wouldn't use the look for performing, just a nice daytime look (without the false eyelashes) . My discovery is that a total matte look (with no base except for paint pots Painterly to be exact) on me lasts anywhere from 8-10 hours with no creasing, no fading, looks just like I put it on 10 minutes ago. It lasts better than my face makeup! I'm doing the happy dance again because I can do a matte look sometimes for a day look and have it look great, even at the end of the day!
Shimmers and frosts tend to last only 4 or so hours and they begin to crease. I just wanted to share this with everyone. It works for me, so it might work for someone else who needs it, too! But I still love my frosts and shimmers!

Does anyone else have an issue with ingrown hairs on legs? I've tried some scrubs and loofah sponges but the backs of my legs still have very visible little bumps on them. Not exactly pretty when wearing shorts and bathing suits. Any suggestions?

I got an offer to face paint for a 'club' picnic. I thought, "Ah-ha, perfect chance to spend the dollars for a Ben Nye kit!" The next thought was, "Maybe not so much. I don't want to contaminate such an awesome kit, expense with crumbs, sweat and kid goo in general." So, any ideas on where to buy something the little buggers won't sweat off, but parents can remove without a ton of trouble. Like 'lick 'em, stick 'em tattoos.' Stay for a bit, remove with baby oil.
THANKS!!!

Buyer be aware...FYI - Darklocks.com

Hi all,

I don't post much but I felt this may need mentioning. I found some really cool crin hair falls on Darklocks.com and myself and two other troupe mates ordered 3 pairs in the last week of April. Well, the charge went through on the credit card on May 12th and we have yet to receive the order. We've tried to contact them several times in the last month via 8 emails and 3 phone calls with no answers. Darklocks only contacted us once about 8 or 9 days ago to say that they were back in stock and shipping. Still we haven't received them. When placing the order we were also very clear about when we needed them for our upcoming show which is June 13th. (Well..we actually told them we needed them the 7th so we would have them in time)
So anyways, Great prices, items look great in the pictures on the site, but very poor customer service and business ethics.
They didn't contact us at all to tell us they were out of stock or if they were unable to fill the order in time, and they charged the card way before it items were even in stock never mind shipped! Sent them one more email yesterday telling them if we didn't receive the order we were going to contact the bank and get our money back and cancel the order, still no response.
Well, that's the story *shrug* I don't like talking bad about people but this is kind of rediculous.
So buyer be aware.
We're hoping to still get them in time and we were actually very excited about getting them, but if we don't we will have to come up with some kind of plan B for the performance at the last minute.

Has anyone out there ever ordered from them? If so, any of the same problems?
Any cool ideas out there to replace the crin hair idea for an industrial/goth costume?

Thanks for *listening* to me rammble on :)

Hey gals! Ok, I will be honest...i barely ever EVER do anything to my hair because i have no time cuz of school or anything so i just leave it loose or put it in a braid or pony tail. Im gonna be preforming for the first time and i have no clue what to do with my hair! Some of my friends think i should do something similar to Zoe Jakes cuz we have the same hair style (my hair color might be a bit brighter though) but i just do not know honestly. So what place to go to than here? Im posting a picture of me with my hair loose so i can get ideas? pictures? Pretty please?

Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster. I just wanted to share. I picked up the new MAC solar bits eyeshadow in black ore. Goes on black, but depending on the angle and light it either looks solid black or sparkly gold. There is a lot of fall out if you put it on with a brush, and still quite a bit if you apply with your fingers. Definitely something you would have to put on first, even before concealer. I just love it. Works great with my Tribaret looks and some of my tribal looks.

Got scars, stretch marks or uneven skin tone?

My troupe did a show yesterday at our Shakespeare fest and my friend Maharet from Buffalo, MO gave me the most awesome idea **ever** for tricky skin that I just had to post. Dudes, i apologize if you've heard of this before, but the idea hit me so hard it hurt! Lol!

Maharet has a surgery scar on her belly, and she hates wearing the stupid powernet bellycovers. So you know what she does? She uses spray-on pantyhose!!! Yes! It stays on all day, doesn't rub off on anything or wear down throughout the day. To take it off, she just takes a shower and uses lots of soap.

She sprays it on her belly to hide her scar and give her a nice even tan color...
She sprays it on her chest when she has multiple tan lines.

And now I'm thinking of all the possibilities...
You could use the spray for what it was intended for, i suppose, and use it on your legs. It'd give them a nice even tone without the slipperiness of pantyhose.
I can hide my post-partum scars and stretchmarks without hiding my full back tattoo w/ a bellycover.
It could possibly hide a smallish tattoo if necessary.
If rubbed on, could you possible use it on your face as your foundation? hmm...
I could use it on my arms to hide bumps and *freckles*...

I've only seen it on her belly and on her chest and I haven't tried anything else, but this spray-on pantyhose stuff sounds promissing.
I found a link online for it:
http://www.sallyhansen.com/product.cfm?product=149
I think you can buy it at walgreens...

If anyone has any experience with this, pictures, advice or ideas, bring 'em! :)
Gel liners

Here we go again. Has anyone tried the Revlon "Line Fantasy" gel liner? I guess it is their try at the ever so popular gel liners. I tried the plum/purple color. Its fabulous in the little glass jar (JUST like the HIP jar), but not so wonderful on the eye.

It is creamy, but the application is uneven, and spotty; the brush is very good, I will give them that. The color takes a while to dry and I found some seperation in the jar- a clear solvent of some kind (I wonder what that is I am putting on my eyelids). My reaction is "eh" Wish'd I haddent spent the $$.

However, all is not lost. It mixes well with the black HIP gel liner, and makes the black a dense, irridescent deep deep black that lasts for AGES. I wont go out and stock up. I think Revlon should have done more research, and worked on something wonderfull, instead of falling into lockstep and copying all the rest.

Buying hair pieces in Wichita, KS

Oh my God! I've been in Wichita all week and found out about a place called Sam's Beauty Supply Plus, looking for hair pieces to wear over the famous sock bun. The walls were just absolutely full of hair pieces of all types in all sorts of colors. I was like a kid in a candy shop and Mr. Sam Hong, the owner, helped me and fixed hair clips on my purchases. I bought 2 curly falls -- 1 longer and 1 short/medium length which look like a cascade of curls @ $11.99 each, 1 package of long hair about 40" long which I initially plan to braid to wrap around my bun @ $.99, a pair of decorated hair sticks @ $1.49, and 5 fun curly yarn things (to make into a hair fall) at 5 for $.99. So, for $30 bucks I can really change my hair looks for dance or everyday. Yes, I use hair pieces to work and social events and just last Saturday a girl said she wished she knew who my hair dresser is. Teehee! :)

Thank you to Bellatrix for her recent hair/makeup workshop where she taught about using sock hair buns and topping them with hair pieces. I'm loving it all!

I Prefer to Belly Dance barefoot, but have noticed that the skin on my feet have become harder, especially the heel's.
I use a foot pumice when i bath/shower, which keeps it in check, but was wondering if anyone could recommend a good way of keeping the skin soft.
I'm finding that normal body lotions are not up to the task.

Hi! As a cancer survivor, I don't take my health for granted. I'm a professional Belly Dancer in S. Florida and want safe makeup that stays on. Can any of you recommend organic, natural makeup for dancers? Is there such a thing as waterproof organic makeup? Any leads would be greatly appreciated....
Conditioner...not just for for your tresses...

Back when I was in my 20's, I was a licensed cosmetologist...and of course, we had access to some of the best products on the market...

One of those product lines was NeXxus...which I wish I could still afford...the Humectress hair moisturiser and Ensure conditioner were the bomb!!!

Anyhow, after seeing a very inane article on how men are moving towards skin care...(heck, my self proclaimed 'grubby little hippie' has been using Nivea for Men for years)...it got me to thinking about some of the many uses for what we consider everyday products...

Like conditioner, for instance...

We used to recommend Ensure as a shave creme...it closes the cuticle not only on the hair, but on the skin, as well...preventing ingrown hairs and razour rash...but the thing is, pretty much any conditioner will do the same thing...

I've been shaving with nothing else but a regular conditioner for years...and I can't remember the last time I ended up with a cut or an even slight case of razour rash...it's not foaming, like a shave cream would be...but it's just as cushioning and lots of times, less expensive than getting the fancy shave gels or creams that are on the market...

I wouldn't recommend using an expensive conditioner for this purpose...cuz when you think of having to use it on both your hair and on your body, it can go pretty quickly...but, geez...I have coloured hair and I've been using the Suave brand that is supposed to be equivalent to Biolage for quite some time...(not near being as good, but still works just fine)...and it's cheap, cheap, cheap...and the scent is pretty darn close...(always thought the real thing smelled almost good enough to eat)...and the conditioner works very well for shaving...

Just thought I'd share...

Split Heel :(

So I started taking some of the dead skin off my heels with one of those sandpaper/stick things...and using lots of lotion to keep my heels soft.

But a few days later the skin started hardening again and then split in a few places (almost like a split lip, sorry I know it's gross). The worst split is right on the back of my heel and it's DEEP and painful to walk on at times (and dance obviously :)

What did I do wrong?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has tried this..I've searched the tribe and found disccusion on scarring, but not on the actual product itself. I have just the little bumps on my forehead and cheeks mostly likely from the product I put in my hair. I'm using a lighter oil to keep it moistured which also made my bumps less but I'm still getting them. I wondering if anyone has tried it and gotten results.

I went to the doctor and they prescribed a cream that worked for a little while until my skin got used to it, it starts with a t....

Thanks in advance!

I am a MAC addict and as a MAC addict, I snub all other cosmetics, until now.
OMG, I found this site ladies, that you cannot, cannot afford to pass up. http://www.eyeslipsface.com/default.asp

I was really leary at first when I found their website; then I thought about it, I really had nothing to lose. I ordered an eyeshadow brush and every single powder eyeshadow color listed. I recieved my order yesterday and I just love, love, love it!!! I even placed another order for their cream eyeshadow and some more makeup brushes. I do not ordering blushes, lip color or foundations via internet for obivious reasons.

Please check it out, almost all of the merchandise on this site is $1.00, yes my dears, you heard me right, $1.00.

Okay, now that I finished gushing, The eyeshadow brush is soft, great for applying eyeshadow and it can also be used for blending.

Any hoo, check it out and please let me know what you think.

thanks for listening

I haven't tried a setting item like the potion from Decay brand, but almost everything else. My eyelid colors like to migrate to below my eye, filling in the huge area and giving me really pretty raccoon eyes (sacrastic). I like the liquid eye liner (still learning how) but hate the minimal selection.
Ideas?

MAC Paint Pot in Blackground

Ok girlies, this is in regards the previous post of mine regarding the Sharkskin Shadestick and our sorrow about it being discontinued.
I went to the MAC counter and they gave me a sample of the Paint Pot in Blackground to try.....the color is identical to the Sharkskin!! Yay!! Also, much creamier than the shadestick so easier to apply, but dries to a crease proof finish. You do need to apply it with a brush...I used a camoflauge brush for the lid and a liner brush to line underneath....both having synthetic bristles. All in all it worked great. Just need to work on controlling the application with the brush. My lids get creasy really easily and it still looks great and I've had it on all day! The stick was easier, but like I said this is exactly the same so I am greatly relieved to find a replacement!

Just thought I'd share this with you all!
Happy make-upping! :)

trying to manage long hair

Hi,

I've been trying to grow my hair long recently. Unfortunately I've run into a lot of problems, so I'm just posting here to see if anyone can help.

Okay... The problem I have is that my hair isn't naturally straight, so is very hard to keep under control. I'm seriously clumsy and a bit "in a world of my own", so I don't dare use hair straighteners for fear of injuring myself. I've tried using strong hair gel, but the strongest I can find that isn't animal-tested only holds my hair in place for a day - and it doesn't do that good a job even then.

Can anyone:

* suggest anything?
* offer any useful tips on keeping long, not-straight hair under control?
* if worst comes to the worst, offer any advice on a reasonably feminine looking short hairstyle? I'm TG, so I *really* need a style that still looks feminine.

Thanks ^_^
H.i.P discontinued at Walgreens?

So, I went to Walgreens tonight and saw that they have a couple of the HiP products on clearence. ( All Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss and lip sticks) I got a lip gloss for $2.50, which at Walgreens is usually $6 or higher.

I got to talking to one of the cashiers about the close out price on them. She said that the line isn't selling so they are closing it out. She said in the next few weeks or so that the eye shadows should be on clearence too.

I don't know if that is true or if they are just getting rid of a portion of the HiP line but I wanted to give you all a possible heads up.

Also, I have been know to find the HiP line at the .99 cent only store from time to time. (Different than Dollar Tree)

Happy make up shopping.

It happens really quickly once I put them on. I thought maybe my liners were old and so bought new, but it's still happening. I don't line the inside of my eye, but I do wear contacts. I do line the entire outside of the eye including into the corner near the nose - but I'm careful to keep the liner outside the eye.

Anyone got any suggestions for either product or some other solution to this! Zombie eyed belly dancers just don't work for me.

Halleyah :(

PS: The liner I use for everyday wear that I apply just along the top lash line doesn't bother me at all. Could the color be the problem? My daywear is brown and my dance liners are black. Hmmm?

Makeup Tips for: "single eyelid"

Hi - I need some help. I am performing with a friend later next month. We are going to get together to work on makeup. I took a class at MAC and I can do mine (I'm a one trick pony...but at least I'm not afraid of make up any more).

I would like some recommendations for make up for eyes with a "single eyelid". uTube tutorials preferred since I'm not uber make up savy ... if anyone has/can find any - no luck for me yet. Please see here for photo for a similar eye:

http://akuaku.org/images/single_lid.jpg

She has a lot of below-the-brow/above-the-eye area to work with. We're looking for something dramatic...no hookerish (ha ha ha)!

Anyway - thanks for your help!
trying to decide to cut my hair

I don't have the longest hair in the world or the longest neck, either and I have a bit of a double chin. I have gotten it in my head (LOL) that I want to cut my hair in a '20s bob like Selma Blair in the latest INSTYLE magazine or like Colleen Moore, an authentic flapper. There are a couple of pictures in my profile that shows my hair as it is now. I really need some opinions from people who won't tell me what I want to hear, but will tell me an honest opinion about this. I'm not entirely the best judge because what "I" think looks good on me makes me end up looking like a pinhead. I am really not indecisive about this, I just need some opinions, good bad or indifferent. And then I have no earthly idea what I would do with my hair for dancing! Thanks for your help and input.

Keeping bangs in place?

I love the look the Indigo girls (and others) have where they have some hair artfully around their faces as well as headbands and updos...but I find that my bangs either flop all over the place or end up looking stiff and crunchy (and still have one or two little pieces that flop out of place) when I try to gel them down.

I avoid hair products in my everyday life so I'm pretty clueless - any recommendations? I have sideswept bangs and would like to not have to pin them out of the way when I dance, as I do like them.

Mascara for every day wear

Can anyone suggest a mascara for every day wear? I'm not looking for lengthening or thickening--just something to coat the lashes and look natural, as if I just so happen to have dark lashes. It would be great if it didn't flake, was reasonably priced, and readily available in a drugstore. I hope that's not too much to ask!

the best way to wear a hazara??

Hi everyone..
What's the best way to wear a hazara, you know, the afghani
style headdresses with the chain that goes in your middle hair part
and the straps go behind the ears??
for more of an international look I love the look of it with a veil draped on it but I worry about snags on it from the metal bits..
I've seen it draped on a turban for the ATS look , when I wear just the headress it looks killa but the rest of my head looks naked...what other kind of stuff compliments it well for a cool fusion look?
can I do buns and headbands? suggestions/ pix anyone?
Thank you!

A while back I had bought Maybelline's "cool effect cooling eye shadow / liner" and I loved the color I got (cool beans) and it looked really great. I was really sad though because it is damn near impossible to sharpen this thing! Can you guys recommend any similar products that are just as good if not better? I really loved it but I just want something that I can use for longer than a couple weeks. Thanks :)

Well it convinced me to try no poo. I don't use the baking soda/apple cider vinegar method, too harsh for me. I have used Indian herbs, clay, just water and more recently, just good ol' cheap suave conditioner. My hair has become healthier and much, much wavier. I started Feb 26th. You can see the transition photos here. Just thought I'd share.

My teacher and troupe director is not generally a make-up wearing woman. She is naturally beautiful, but as we all know, stages tend to erase what we were born with - especially in pictures!

We recently performed a 30 minute set at an outdoor festival. Georgia in May - you can imagine the heat and humidity. I wore (in this order) philosophy's the present, BE mineral veil, lumiere cashmere foundation, another layer BE MV, and then some "foiled" BE colors and MAC pigments on my eyes, with l'oreal liquid liner and mascara. I wore blush and lipstick, too.

I put roughly the same things on her, except that she used physician's formula foundation. By the end of our performance, the make-up (mainly the eye-stuff, from what I could tell) was literally running down her face. I knew that she tended to perspire from her eyebrows, but I thought that the pigments would stand up to it.

Have any of you ever experienced this? Techniques, products, tools or tips would all be helpful!

Hey gals, I have been using eye line for a long time and plenty of it! Yet, I do have the problem that it very quickly (without rubbing or touching) it fades or looks like its melting away I have tried brands such as Avon, MAC and Revlon and much more. All have given me the same problem. I do like to wear the darkest black. I hope someone out there could give a little advice on how to make this eyeliner disaster stop or a new brand i could use maybe? Thanks!!!

Sources for high quality fake flowers?

Hey all!

I've been lurking for awhile, and now I'm finally posting! I was wondering where everybody finds their flowers? I'm having a horrible time finding any that don't scream fake! I'm trying to put together ideas for my outfit for when I work at the front gate at the renfest this year! I've found a few that are ok, but only 2 realistic touch ones. I want them to look real since everybody will be right next to me!

Thanks!

Hey there! I am going to a gothic masquerade party and i have no idea what to do for a mask. I want to use make up to make it but I barely know much about make up so I think I came to the right place. Any ideas or pictures? I would appreciate it thanks!

Swords Banned in the UK... Please Read

Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.
Is There a Squirrel in Your Makeup Bag?

Brush Up on Synthetic Makeup Brushes
You already know that being kind to animals is as easy as choosing cosmetics made by companies that don’t test on animals, such as Revlon, Estée Lauder, Avon, and Mary Kay. But wait … before you dust on that bronzer, take a good look at your makeup brush.
Chances are that it’s made from animal fur, and if you wouldn’t wear fur, you definitely don’t want to use it to apply your cruelty-free cosmetics!

Cruelty That’ll Make You Blush
Makeup brushes are commonly made from squirrel, mink, sable, horse (sometimes called pony or camel), or goat hair. Mink and sable brushes are products of the cruel fur industry. Every year, millions of animals are trapped, drowned, and beaten to death in the wild and strangled, gassed, electrocuted, or skinned alive on fur farms. Horse hair is commonly obtained from horses who are slaughtered for their flesh. Squirrels are hunted or trapped, and goats are shorn like sheep. Workers are often paid by volume, so they shear the goats quickly, which can result in serious injuries.

Many makeup brushes are manufactured in developing countries where there are few or no animal welfare regulations.

Super Synthetics
There’s no reason to use animal-hair brushes when there are so many high-quality synthetic brushes available.
Check out these companies’ luxurious offerings:

*The Body Shop knows that if you wouldn't put on makeup using your cat's tail, you don't want to use any other animal part, either—its brushes don't contain animal hair.
*Denise Chaplin n.y.c. makes 16 different shapes and sizes of brushes that stand up to frequent use and washing and fit the needs of professional makeup artists.
*Ecco Bella Botanicals has a range of non-animal brushes that complement its cruelty-free cosmetics.
*Paris Presents' EcoTools makeup brushes are made with cruelty-free taklon bristles, sustainable bamboo handles, and other natural and recyclable materials to keep you and the Earth looking beautiful. Alicia Silverstone is a celebrity fan of these luxurious-yet-affordable brushes, which can be found in many drugstores.
*Garden Botanika brags that its 100 percent Taklon brushes are actually softer than those made from fur, allowing more makeup to cling to the brush and providing a smoother application.
*Origins Natural Resources brushes look and feel like animal hair, but don’t worry—they’re cruelty-free just like the rest of Origins’ personal-care products.
*Urban Decay Good Karma brushes tickle your face using synthetic Taklon.
*Aveda brushes are also made of Taklon, with a flax-infused, recycled-resin handle.
They’re animal- and environment-friendly!
*Hard Candy uses super-soft synthetic hair in its brushes—cruelty-free just like its luxurious cosmetics.
*Sevi Cosmetics' 100 percent Taklon brushes are the perfect complement to its vegan makeup.
No cruel animal testing and no creepy animal ingredients!
*Valana Minerals knows that "[t]here is no need to sacrifice quality or animals in the pursuit of beauty." Its six luxurious synthetic makeup brushes are perfect for applying Valana's cruelty-free and vegan powder, foundation, blush, bronzer, and eye color.
*Afterglow luxe professional cosmetics brushes are uniquely designed to provide a beautiful, flawless finish. Handmade of the highest quality Taklon, they're super soft and ideal for applying loose mineral makeup evenly.
*Jennifer Campain Cosmetics' custom-designed animal-friendly professional makeup brushes feature feather-soft, hand-shaped brown Taklon fiber as well as seemless nickel-plated ferrules and kiln-dried white birch handles.

What You Can Do
Please write to your favorite makeup companies that still use real animal hair in their brushes and ask them to switch to Taklon fibers. Contact PETA www.peta.org if your favorite cruelty-free company makes vegan brushes but is missing from our list—we’d love to add it.

Fake hair vendor recommendation

I just ordered from this site and wanted to share. I was very happy.

http://ultimatelooks.com/

I've recently been converted to the world of fake hair. I like having my hair off my neck when I dance, but I have such fine hair that once I get it up there's not a lot to play with. So I bought a couple of those little pieces that go over a bun and look all wild, and they are awesome!

This vendor got my order to me in less than a week and the color I selected on screen looked exactly like what I got in the mail. They have a lot of colors to choose from.

For the record, I twist my hair in a tight bun then layer these two pieces over it:
http://ultimatelooks.com/jonrenauwigs/funkyjr.htm
http://ultimatelooks.com/jonrenauwigs/preciousjr.htm

Then I clip one of those beaded discs over my twisted up hair in the middle and stick all the hairsticks and flowers into the whole mess.

help! anyone know where to find temporary UV active ORANGE hair dye (paste or spray)

I'm leaving on a 10 week tour of 10 countries in Europe next Thursday, May 8th and the
theme of my entire tour is Dayglo Orange Plastic and I'm discovering that most
of the manufacturers of the UV paste products have discontinued them.

L'Anza Fractals F12 Giga hold is no more.
They seriously reduced the number of colors with Punky Colors Tempry colors.
Manic Panic Dye Hard in tubes has discontinued some of their colors
and ICE hair doesn't seem to have an Orange that glows in the dark.

Last night I put Dye Hard yellow with Ice Red but only the yellow in it glows under a black light
(and it looks like hell)

DAYGLO ORANGE seems to have gone missing. I'd prefer paste to spray (and I"m not talking about the
temporary color that washes out in a few weeks, but the stuff that you put in and out of your hair on a daily basis).

I live in Santa Cruz but would drive as far as SF if I can find some of these products at the last minute.

I have a two questions:
1) where do you find the best and amazing eyelashes; normal and absolutely fabulous
2) any advice on getting them on (eg good adhesive, tools you use, trick). I used to do stage makeup but this is the ONE thing that has completely eluded me for years!!!

So I need some info, oh wise belly dancers!

My hair is roughly chin length and I'm looking for easy/inexpensive options to get longer hair for performing. I do mostly cabaret, so the cool yarn falls probably won't work. I'm assuming my 3 options are some kind of extensions (I've seen ones you just clip in or the long fake pony), a 3/4 wig (and I'm not really sure how that works), or a full wig.

Any suggestions? Any preferences? Any advice? Thanks in advance for the sharing of knowledge!

Hi everyone! I am interested in making some hair falls, probably using fake hair and tassels, but I am having the hardest time trying to think of a way to secure them to my very short hair :( My hair is jaw length in the front, and even shorter in the back, but when I dance I want to use something pretty and flowing. Any ideas on how to dress up or use my short hair for bellydance? If it helps, I am putting together a tribal-style costume.

Thanks so much!

Another discovery about eye shadow

I used to have a lot of time on my hands when I worked in a local dance store. We sold everything imaginable for dancers/actors and so on. I played in the make-up a whole lot. We sold Ben Nye products and Mehron. So long story short, I mixed Final Seal, (I believe its made by Proface or Ben Nye) and Ben Nye eyeshadow (Bronze) and painted my shoes!!!!!!!
Yes, Final Seal, which is used for holding make-up in place even through a freakin hurricane, AND Ben Nye (Bronze) EyeShadow. I mixed them, painted them onto suede dance shoes and 6 years later, they have not faded or chipped. They look just like they did when I painted them and I have walked through rain, massive puddles, mud, gravel, you name it. I also painted leather with the same mixture but different color of Ben Nye eye shadow (Mermaid Green) and the same results. I havent tried it yet, but Im sure you can use other eye shadows to mix with Final Seal to create shoe paint! Sure you can go buy actual shoe paint, but when you see an eye color that you know is a rare shoe color, then youve got your answer right here.

Im sure this subject has been brought up, MILLIONS of times. But what better place to go, right?
I JUST started using false eyelashes. I have a few questions...
1. What type of eyelash adhesive is best?
2. Do you put them on AFTER or BEFORE eyeshadow?
3. Is it ok to put them on OVER liquid liner?
4. Can you re-use them?
5. How long should you let the glue dry before applying them?

Thank you so much, as I am sure these questions have been answered before. Thanks for your patience!

I haven't worn make up in a long time. Now that I am getting into costume and make up for dance I was wondering...

What kind of make up caddy to you use to keep all your goodies straight, clean and accessible?
Both at home and when traveling?
What about for those gals that have 417 different colors of eyeshadow? Are there gals who have so much they warehouse their make up? LOL!

Inquiring minds... are nosy!

A Headbanger's Hair

I love the 'tribal' hair with all the ornaments and cowrie falls. I wish I could dress my head up like that, but I dance to heavy metal, and I do bang my head around a bit so I usually just let it stand alone without any ornaments. I've tried adding a Fall here and there, but I just end up flinging it across the room. hehehe
Is there something lite weight that I can add to my hair, that's easy to keep in?

And I'd like to give major kudos to the creator of this tribe! It's great!

Permanent wigs

Have you guys ever run across a more permanent wig for under $50?

I am losing all my hair, not by choice, and needless to say me and boyfriend don't appreciate this fact. It takes me so long to grow my hair, and now it's leaving.

I don't need to sleep in it, but what about for performances, clubbing and whatever? Most wigs have combs to attached to your real hair, see previous statement. How would I make it stay?

Does anyone know what happened to Cookie Puss cosmetics?? The website comes up in a search on google but it is defunct. Their eye shadow was so much higher in pigment than mac but I can't find them anywhere.

installation of Dread extensions

hey all!
Is there anybody on this tribe, that lives in the DFW metroplex that can install dread extensions? I have 60, (a full head of hair) double ended, super long black synthetic dread extensions, and I'm needing my extensions back in, and it's somewhat hard to put them in myself. I am willing to pay if someone has the experience and would be willing to perform the installation. Thanks ahead of time!
